Just when I thought that 2011 was going to be a better year for me I got slapped with a $1,045 doctor bill for outstanding 2010 visits. Why they weren't invoicing me every time I went I do not understand and of course it was unbudgeted because I thought my insurance was covering it since I wasnt receiving bills. Called the insurance company right away and to make a long story short after a lot of phone calls they arent covering any of it because my doctor pulled out of their program in the middle of last year and they will only back pay six months anyway which was the time she was out of network so I'm stuck with the payment. Obviously I told her that its going to take me time to pay off so she better not expect it in one shot. My mother feeling bad for me paid $100 towards it which she really can not afford to do but I am grateful for the help so its at $945. To make matters worse I took my new car for its first oil change and had budgeted in $20 (which is what I used to pay in my other car). Well to my shock it was $80 because apparently this car takes more oil and uses a different kind. Since I had no choice but to get the oil changed since I was already almost 1,000 miles over I had to take the money out of my emergency fund. Now I am down to $15 in it. So now not only do I have to work on paying this bill off but I have to work on rebuilding my EF. Should be a fun next couple of months. When I get home from work today I am going to go over all of my numbers and post my update and I am going to redo my goals for 2011 since what I have now really isnt going to work with a new debt and this new restructing program I am trying. Anyone else sick of the snow? Its making my commute a nightmare and I am losing a lot of hours that would really help right now! For the first time in my life I am hoping for no more snow! Good luck in the weather everyone!

That's my first update since joining, and I'm very disappointed. Rather than going down, I went up. Unfortunately I had a few unexpected expenses in the last two months, so I wasn't able to allocate as much money to CC debt. I'm more motivated to make up for it in the next few months! ;D Also, I'm trying to pay off some of the low balances first to gain some momentum. I wish I did this before, it's definitely encouraging! Previously I had focused on the higher interest rate accounts to have a bigger impact. I have planned out my payments for the next year based on this new approach, and I'm very excited!

I really wanted to be able to pay off CC #2, but I was afraid, I would cut it very close. I figure I can hang on two more weeks, until I get paid again to pay it off. I did not include it in my savings table yet, but I received a very nice surprise in the mail this week. I sub at the local high school, and was automatically enrolled into their retirement plan. I have over $1200 in this account that I did not even know existed. I hope all of you are not going stir crazy with all of the snow.

For those of you that have/had student loans: How do you deal with the huge payments? I'm with Sallie Mae and my loans are in forbearance because I can't afford the 400 a month payment. I'm throwing every penny onto my credit cards to pay them off as much as I can before October when they go up again. My biggest payment will be 548 dollars for 4 years! How am I going to be able to afford this? I have $38,000 to pay off total. Is there a way to go about paying them off without losing your sanity? Thanks for your help. idlecrush Idlecrush, I have $32,000 in student loans for graduate school from citibank. (I am not racing the SL's at this time). My loans just came off of forebarance. I contacted Citibank to see what they could help me with. They were really nice and I agreed to pay $125.00 twice a month on automatic payment for the next year. I guess the credit card companies are figuring that it is actually better to start helping people out, instead of waiting to see if they will actually get paid or not.

Belladisastre: Congrats on the new job! Lark: Okay, so we're supposed to get more snow on Tues/Wed. I still don't trust the meteorologists! My gut is telling me we're going to get SLAMMED with snow or that nasty ice again. Idle: I'm currently racing my undergrad and law school loans. They were in forbearance while I clerked because there was no way I could make the payments. I knew that when I would have to start paying on them I had to figure out some things fast. I calculated how much interest I would have to pay over the life of the loan and it came out to $47,000. I remember scratching my head and saying to myself, "But, wait....that's more than half of the principle." I then told myself that I wanted to get rid of them as fast as I could. That being said, I decided to cut my expenses as much as I could and pick up any overtime/extra work that I could and that's what I've been doing. There is nothing glamorous about my life right now.....TRUST! It's funny because I don't remember Ally Macbeal talking about her student loans. Like my credit card debt I used to have, I knew that my student loans weren't going anywhere unless I made them go away. If you've cut your expenses that you feel comfortable cutting and you've exhausted all avenues to bring in extra cash I would encourage you to call your lender. Tell them your situation and see if they'll work with you. It can't hurt.

Hi...can someone tell me how to line my columns up in this format? Thanks, IrishSOB Howdy! OK, this is HTML, it has a beginning [] and an end [/] for each attribute. If you "quote" this message from me, you will see where I bold and italicize. You'll also see a beginning of your quote and an end /quote. The table begins with "table" and ends with "/table". "tr" is table row, "td" is tab delimiter. Someone made a great suggestion that you put things into excel, line everything up, then add in columns for the HTML, and then transfer it all in a lump - I don't know offhand if you need to put it in a text file, first, but after it's transferred in, you preview it, and it should all look right. So what you'll see is sort of like: table tr td col1 /td td col2 /td td col3 /td td col4 /td /tr tr td stuff1 /td td stuff2 /td td stuff3 /td td stuff4 /td /tr tr td more1 /td td more2 /td td more3 /td td more4 /td /tr /table but all the attributes will show up with [ ] surrounding them. Not really readable in the text, but if you transfer it from something else, then it will work! Btw, anytime you "quote" someone, you get all the attributes, too, for links and bold and italics, etc., there's also the table setup, so... if you go in and choose a table... I'm going to do it here, also, it's 2 columns wide, 3 rows deep, all blank, but if you "quote" me, you'll see the attributes:

Good luck in the weather everyone! Kristin, you need to talk with your doctor's billing office, again. When you go in at the beginning of every appointment, the receptionist takes your information, and at that time, they should immediately say, "We no longer use this insurance". They should say this every time, even if they've said it before, even if you've been going to this doctor since you were 1 month old, they are required to tell you the billing will be changed. Period. There is no "being nice" about this - they weren't nice enough to tell YOU, were they? They need to eat half that bill - and you need to find a new doctor. And tell them why in no uncertain terms!

Lark1964 - Unfortunately its not the type of Doctor that regularly takes your information or updates you through a receptionist. Its a therapist that I had been talking to for a few years now but my mom has always taken care of. I see her in her home once a month so things are very unofficial. With everything going on with my parents finances they told me I would have to start paying myself in May. Guess its mostly my fault because I didnt ask questions or follow up on anything when I wasnt getting billed but there is nothing I can do now.

Update: Kristin11: 1/31/11 $13,521.13 (12/31/09 $16,567.73 NEU8)
1. Domestications - $0 – No Change 2. Kohls - $386.00 – ($42.07) Decrease 3. Target Visa - $4,353.40 – ($44.69) Decrease 4. Discover - $1,473.12 – ($8.23) Decrease 5. Disney Visa - $1,120.44 – ($17.74) Decrease 6. Shell Fuel Card - $0 – No Change 7. Macys - $0 – No Change 8. Sisters Loan - $510.00 – No Change 9. Bethpage FCU - $5,678.17 – ($154.73) Decrease
Total change for the past month was ($267.46) Decrease.
This is probably going to be the average decrease on all my updates this year. I am going to turtle along and follow this new payment schedule that I made up through a website my Aunt found for me. I am currently working to pay off the Kohl’s card and my one non racing credit card, both of which will hopefully be done by late summer. I am then going to work on the Disney Visa. It is my lowest interest rate and if I snowball my non racing and Kohl’s card payments onto this one I should be able to have it done by this time next year. I then plan on trying to transfer some money from my Target card once it is paid off because Targets interest rate is 5% higher and I think that would make a big difference in how long things will take to pay off. Now that I have a plan lets just see if I can stick to it!
Here are my updated 2011 Goals:
1. Keep Macy’s and Domestications Cards at a $0 Balance 2. Pay off Kohl’s Card and Only Use If I Can Pay Off Purchase In Cash Right Away 3. Continue to not use Credit Cards for everyday purchases 4. Find a Job Closer To Home 5. Reduce the balance on Target Card to $4,000 ($4,353.40 Currently) 6. Reduce Disney Balance so that I only need to make 1 payment in 2012 7. Try to Make Extra Payments on my Bethpage FCU Loan to have it paid off sooner – Want to be at $4,000 owed by the end of 2011.
Some of these goals carry over from last year because I was unable to obtain them. I think I imagined my first year here to be more successful then it was but this year I am being more realistic and making the majority of my goals things that I know I can accomplish with a little hard work. Goal #9 is my reach goal that might be harder to obtain but I am certainly going to try!

One last update for January. I wish I could've gotten that big CC down to $15999, but I'm holding back some cash for the dogs' vet visits that are coming up soon. Once I have that appt and pay for it in cash, I'll know what extra I have left to pay toward one of these CCs. As good as I'm going, I know that my balance is going to go up soon. Both because I need to do a BT from CapOne to Citi in February when the 0% interest on CapOne ends and because we are getting close to the point where we'll be buying flooring, drywall, and cabinets for the new kitchen we've built on to our house. As long as I keep fighting down the new debt and decreasing the big balance, I'll be happy, but it will be discouraging to see the amount go up again. DEBT | START | January 18, 2011 | January 31, 2011 | SL | 755.58 | 0 | 0 | CC1 (BOA) | 7869.49 | 3888.63 | 3888.63 | CC2 (Citi) | 9877.05 | 0 | 0 | CC3 (Cap 1) | 0.00 | 16384.62 | 16066.51 | TOTAL | $18502.12 | 20273.25 | 19955.14 |

One positive thing to add is that, even though my balance will be going up and down like a yo-yo this year, I have been taking on freelance work that will help me make some extra payments and/or just pay for home reno things in cash so they never hit a CC. I just finished one project that earned me just over $200, I turned down one that would've grossed over $1K but was too much work in too tight a timeframe, and I'm about to take on another project that should gross me about $750. Since we still get tax refunds (probably another year or two before we'll feel comfortable enough w/how we handle our finances to do away with the refund), I don't set aside any of the earnings against future taxes, so anything I earn can immediately go toward debt paydown. It makes for crazy days since I have a full-time job, two young kids, and a house undergoing a complete reno, but I sneak it in after the kids go to bed every night, and somehow it gets done.

UPDATE:
Update: FitzGal: 01/31/11, $34,284.25 (7/29/10, $34,936.92, NEU263)
CC1: $2,813.42 CC2: $3,240.80 CC3: $4,368.68 CC4: $23,861.35 $34,284.25
Well, Murphy has come for a visit. Hopefully he won't hang around for too much longer. I've depleted my Step 1 Emergency Fund and have had to use my dreaded CC4 for the rest. First I received a doctors bill that was not expected. When a doctor suggests a test they really should tell you that you'll have to pay for it. I didn't need the test, but I thought it'd be good to have. Not for $200 out of my own pocket though! It reminds me of last years mess with the dentist. A night guard - that I did need (very badly) ended up costing me more than $400 out of pocket! I had no idea until the bill came in!! Anyway, back to this month. So I came home one day to find the dryer running even though my sister/roommate had left hours ago. Turns out the heating coils busted so I had to pay for parts, and more importantly service. My sister did not chip in at all since it's technically my dryer. Less than a week later, she's taking a shower, and the kitchen sink overflows!! So I had a repairman and a plumber to my house within one week. Again, my sister gave me no money. All she did was buy a couple bottles of Drano for future use! Never room with siblings! It's impossible to get them to chip in beyond (the already very reasonable) rent!!! Ugh! So frustrated. It's going to take me FOREVER to get that EF back up to $1000. I only got there originally because of a bonus I got at work. This was such a depressing month. Too much snow, and way too many problems. Hopefully next months update is better. Stay warm everybody!! =)

Bills | Original | Jan 2011 | Feb 2011 | CC1 | $1,435.07 | $1,294.54 | $1242.54 | CC2 | $4,730.84 | $3,962.26 | $4724.21 | LOC | $962.70 | $2,433.10 | $2215.12 | CL#1 | $10,685.96 | $9,478.24 | $9171.01 | Change: + 184.76 |
Well, evidently I messed up last months totals for CC2 as there was only one purchase on that card in January which was for a dental bill for my kids. I have a flex spending account and as soon as I get the paperwork from my insurance company, I can submit for reimbursement and slide the payment over. It usually only takes about a week to get the letter from my insurance, but this month is taking longer. I have a total of $812 that I should be getting reimbursements from for different items, and as soon as I do, the money will go to CC1 so that I can knock that one out. I'm also working about 15 hours of OT every payday to help get rid of this before DD goes to college in the fall. DF and I have finally set a date of September 17th, so my income tax refund is slated to pay for my portion of the wedding. He never had a "real" wedding, so it's a little larger and more traditional than what I originally wanted to do. But it will be fun and not break the bank, so I'm happy.

Still turtling because I had personal property tax to pay in January. That took up my extra money to put towards the tax. At least I could pay it this year. Thanks for your thoughts on student loans. I have 39,000 to pay off, so as soon as I get these cards done I'm going to start on that. idlecrush

I won't be updating until next week, but I just wanted to say how frustrated I am with our tax system. I am a single person with one income and I itemize deductions. Every year my income tax refund was going up, so I did the worksheet on the back of the W-4 and began claiming 4 exemptions. I thought that would take care of it. Still, this year my refund is higher than last year. The money will go in my emergency fund and I'll continue plugging along.

UPDATE:
WUDNIT 2/3/11 $149024 (1/13/10 $172915 NEU46)
Well, I'm celebrating because I'm under $150,000 in debt. I like to celebrate all the small victories!!!! I will take what we can get!! We are down to just 10 more payments on our camp mortgage! Once we have finished that, we will take all the money we are currently paying to that mortgage and start paying down our Apartment mortgage. That will take an additional 24 months from the time we pay off the Camp mortgage. BUT, we are making progress!!! Slow and steady may win this race after all!! I owe a more detailed update and will try to do that sometime this month. Life has been busy, but we are making steady progress on our debt.
