UPDATE 02/05/2013 $36,030 (10/17/2012 $39,706.99, I49)
Yay me! I am well on my way to meeting my goal of a minimum $10,000 paid off towards my debt by the end of this 2013 year. I opened a Visa with a 0.99% promotional rate that ends in June and just opened another one with a 10 month promo rate of 1.99%. I maxed both of those out at the $10,000 limit and have been making the minimum payments monthly. All extra money is still being put on my LoC which is at prime + 5.38%. I hope that once the promotional rates are finished I will be able to transfer the balances back to the LoC since then that will have the lowest interest rate. Even though it overcomplicates my current banking for now, I figure that the dollars I am saving in interest will make up for it. I am still doing a cash budget and take out $450 every payday for all the discretionaries. I don't spend my toonies from any change I receive and that goes straight into our vacation fund. If there is money left over at the end of the two weeks that also goes into the vacation fund. In only a month and a half I have already set aside $150! Work is now offering me overtime until the end of March and I figure I should be able to make an extra $700 or $800. I plan to put 2/3 of it onto the LoC and the rest into the vacation fund as we are planning a trip to Vermont at the end of April to visit a favourite Aunt. We don't need too much money for that trip since lodging is free and we just need to pitch in a little bit for groceries. Gas is also much cheaper in the States. Most of our activities will be free outdoors style adventures, but I do want to take my daughter to a fabulous waterpark there which will be about $100 for the both of us. I estimate that the entire week's trip will be no more than $500 which is definitely do-able. Now I am just waiting for tax time as I am expecting about $1600 as a refund which will go directly on my LoC. I am sooo excited to make that payment!! I hope everyone is doing well and all this cold weather is allowing plenty of hibernating!

Clarification: By maxing out the new CC's I mean that I transferred higher interest balances to them, I didn't make new purchases

I am doing an update to see if I got this figured out.
DEBT | BALANCE | |
---|
Credit Card | 5069.06 | | CIBC plc | 4996.90 | | Credit Union plc | 5000.00 | | TOTAL | 15,065.96 | |
Well I'm going to post and see. Wasn't too bad, just off with one heading and I fixed it. So only half of a computer nerd. . So hopefully by the end of March most of the credit card will be gone or totally gone. We have been selling stuff because it is no longer needed or used. Not buying much for groceries because the freezers are full. So down to basics bread, butter, cheese and milk and hotdogs.

How is everyone doing? The board is quiet these days!
Life here is busy with house stuff. Most of our money is going towards that, while still paying down the debt. We have a $10,000 foundation bill to pay in June, so I'm saving our pennies. Currently we have about $8,400 saved, so I'm feeling good that we'll have the rest in time. But then after the foundation is done, we will have another big bill coming up for the rest of our roof work. (We're getting an estimate for that next month once the snow melts.)
We also are going to bring someone in to paint our upstairs. We bought the paint and got painting supplies from my mom, but DH hasn't done anything about it since then (last December), so in order for it to just get done and save my sanity and marriage, we're getting our neighbour (who happens to be a professional painter) to do it for us. He said he would normally charge per hour and he figures it would be about $750-$1,000, but he wouldn't charge us that much. I'm hoping he'll do it for $500. And every month we have a little bit of money budgeted to do a small home decor project (i.e. new dinnerware, new kitchen faucet, etc.). So this way we're able to keep saving for the big stuff and paying down the debt while we getting some instant gratification.
AND, I'm planning a surprise birthday trip for DH to San Francisco. His birthday is on July 4th, but he's never been to the States for his bday, so I figured it would be a nice getaway. My bday is on July 7th, so it'll be a combined birthday trip, but it's a total surprise for him. I don't plan on telling him until we get to the airport!
So we're spending a lot of money this year! It's all do-able, but not without some penny pinching in other areas and some extra freelance for me.

Yay Idawn! You are doing so well! Congrats on finding that elusive balance between spending and saving LOL.
I'm sorry I did stop updating on this thread. Since we are not actively "racing" anything, I didn't want to commit to being here for another seven years till our first rental is paid off. We are hoping to prepay it and it is now down to 5.5 years. Our goal is still to get that loan done when DS3 finishes HS in 3.5 years.
Things have been going much better for us financially since we re-fied that rental last September.
I lurk, and I read, and I wish you all the very best.

Ok, got the taxes done and used that to pay off credit card. Hubby decided to work 1 day over time every 2nd week and we will use that and all extra cash for the Credit Union Plc and then go after the CIBC Plc. So I think he is finally getting it that he needs to quit spending. Especially if he wants to buy Katie a bigger dirt bike this year. So kids are doing good, oldest got new glasses and realized what a cr___py medical we got for glasses. We have $250.00 for the whole family. She tried on about 50 prs before we found a pair to fit her head. Her glasses came to $385.00. We got back $200.00. Debt | | Balance |
---|
Credit Union | $ 4760.14 | $ 4760.14 | CIBC | $ 5408.76 | $ 5408.76 | Credit Card | $ 5600.19 | $ 0.00 | TOTAL DEBT | | $ 10168.90 |
03/25/2013 $10168.90 (9/2/2009 $24,275.73 I226,IPT4)

Alicesfreedom - Only $250 for the whole family?! That's unreal! Normally it's at least per person. Congrats on paying off the cc!

Yes, ldawngirl, $250.00 for the family and hubby's employers are not budging on that during negotiating with the union either. Hubby needs to get his eyes checked and so do I. Seriously thinking of looking in to get some other type of medical plan, maybe Blue Cross. So I would have a better coverage.
Thank you on the congrats for paying off credit card.

Wow - the fact that it's a union job makes me shake my head even more. How any company or union could think that $250 per family is adequate when it comes to vision care is beyond me. Getting something private is a good idea if you can make it worthwhile financially.
