El those sound like great goals! You know I'm a huge fan of vacations. Speaking of Writer, I heard from her yesterday ... she's doing well but she's still in "deferred maintenance" mode for herself and her home these days, rather than in "savings" mode. I got an updated amortization schedule in the mail today. Just 34e to go on the boiler!

DH - I'm glad you are still in touch with Writer and that she is doing ok. You are really good at keeping in touch with people from these boards (and I imagine elsewhere).
34 e left on the boiler loan left? I'm so supprised that you didn't go out and pay it off immideiatly or are you waiting (Writer style!) for the next repayment to be due?

You guys know me SO well LOL! It will be paid off on 10 June. I can't pay that loan online. If I send a check, by the time it gets cashed it will be the wrong amount. The bank is in central Paris, I LITERALLY don't have the time to physically get to that bank before 1 July. So it will just get paid off on 10 June. ETA: EL, it's true, I am pretty good at keeping in touch with people. This said, I have been wondering how Writer was doing for a while. I was finally prompted to write to her because of a US expat tax issue. As usual, she gave great advice. Also, she's now on Chapter 13 of her novel! We can all say "we knew her back when" LOL!

Congrats EL!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you!!!!!!!! I can't believe how terrible I've been this month.. I've spent about $500 in clothing.. then I had to buy new glasses... $300. My friend's dog chewed on my glasses - so getting new glasses was not a choice for me. lol. Anyway, I'm hoping next month will be better!!

Yeah Debtheaven we all know how much that darn boiler loan drove you crazy!! (on every single sub board on the boards ) so glad you get to get rid of that this next month! So that puts you at totally private debt free right?? Then you just have the bus debt-which I never figure counts!

Zs, we all have months like that. Just tighten up and try to be careful elsewhere for the next month or two so you can absorb those costs. Wow DVM was it THAT obvious?! ;-) Yes, then all that's left is "business" debt. Plenty of it, but I agree, it's not the same thing. ETA: Elder, you show-off you! ;-)

Way to go EL. Been lurking and very busy, but worthwhile. Chickens have been evicted to the coop with their fake mother. My small ostrich feather duster. . Garden is in except the cantaloupe. Now to face the music of what was spent. Although two items were needed. The deep freeze and car tires. I also bought my daughter a grade 7 grad gift of a simple basic sewing machine. Now I am happy about that so she can sew because that is one of her classes in grade 8. Car tire money came out of 2 savings accounts 622.72, so went to bank and dumped that money into the chequing account that day.

Update!I'm under $5k and 68% paid off!!! Card | APR | Starting | Payment | Current | Victorias Secret | 22.80% | $385.12 | $0.00 | $0.00 | Express | 22.80% | $283.40 | $0.00 | $0.00 | Wescom | 15.90% | $5,458.22 | $0.00 | $0.00 | Citicard | 13.99% | $4,214.15 | $588.50 | $140.75 | Nordstrom | 11.90% | $159.26 | $0.00 | $0.00 | Capital One | 7.83% | $3,990.68 | $50.37 | $4,433.91 | Total | | $14,490.83 | $638.87 | $4,574.66 | |
InDebtYogini 5/31/2011 $4574.66 (9/19/2007 $14,490.83)The temptation to just pay off citi is huge right now but I don't want to get myself in a spot where I have to dip into savings. That seems to be happening more than I'd like it to. The past three weeks I've spent traveling all over Cali. My best friend and I went to Palm Springs for a weekend, then to Santa Barbara with my DBF for a wedding and then he surprised me with a trip to Temecula this weekend. I did some damage for sure but it was all budgeted for and paid in cash. Now it's back to the grind stone until August and my trip to Mexico! Citi will be paid off in 3 weeks and that will put me over $10k paid off. Then just 6 months and I'll be done with this race! I'm so glad I got my booty in gear. It will be amazing to be credit card debt free!

Alice your "fake chicken" had me in stitches LOL!
As Yogini said, we all go up sometimes. I think the sewing machine is a lovely gift and I hope your DD continues to use it for many years! A good friend who sews a TON just replaced the one her parents had given her in MS or HS ... and she is 40! And it still works, she just wanted something fancier. (She is generally NOT frugal, but she was very attached to her childhood sewing machine.)
Yogini It's SO great to see you so happy and racing at high speed! Your trips sound great!

I just applied to two more jobs for September today. I know I need to work more hours come September, but I'm trying to work "smarter" and do more hours in fewer places. I worked in seven different places in May and it was pretty crazy-making, both work-wise, and administration-wise.
Obviously the new business school is my priority, and hopefully over time they will offer me more hours. But I'd like to get those seven places down to three or four come September, if possible.
And I'd really really like to give up that night class, it has become the bane of my existence. I'm having lunch with the friend I co-teach it with on Friday, so I'll talk to her about it then. Yes it's steady work, but it's 1.5 hours, once or twice a month. (The center is closed for school holidays, ie two weeks every two months.) I'd MUCH rather work more during the day.
But I feel guilty because I'm in my early 50s, and my friend is in her early 70s LOL. And she got me this job.
ETA: On the other hand, she doesn't have a house with three kids and a DH at home, and another job to get up for at the crack of dawn the next day.
Any thoughts?! If I bow out, it would leave them four months to find a replacement if my friend doesn't want to do it on a weekly basis. My friend travels sometimes. I would definitely offer to cover her classes when she is travelling.
I initially wanted to stay on because I wanted the day classes there. But my friend and her other friend were in their early 60s when they took those day classes on 10 years ago. I'm 51 ... I don't want to have to do that hated night class for 10 years so I can do the day classes when they eventually decide not to. I'd rather put my energy towards "building" my new career. This is indeed a great "retirement" job, but they are both retired, and I'm not.
Any thoughts? Obviously I am conflicted ...

DH-I personally believe if you are not happy, then don't do it. Is it really worth it for 3 hours a month?? Really?? I would go with your goal of more hours in less places.

DH - I agree with FFinBC.... it doesn't seem worth the trouble for a few hours a month. You can use that time for other, more constructive things, like spending time with the kids, doing stuff around the house or other work-related things.

UPDATE
ldawngirl: 6/1/11 | $7,632 (1/4/10 | $27,993 | IU10)
$20,361 (72.7%) paid off
We have been bad about spending lately. So much is going on socially right now (other ppl's weddings, social gatherings, etc.), plus we're paying for our wedding stuff and we both need new shoes/clothes. I'm trying to get a couple items here and there, but it's still tough while we're also trying to save for the wedding.
But in happy news, I get three pay cheques in June! Yay for an extra pay cheque! That also means an extra loan payment this month. All the extra money (that isn't already taken up by regular bi-weekly withdrawals) is going to the wedding. We also want to get DF a secure credit card so that he can start re-building his credit. But whatever money we put towards the card can be used to pay for wedding stuff.
I'm getting VERY tired of not being able to buy certain things when I want (i.e. clothing, meals out, etc.) but I know that a) I can relax a bit when the wedding is over and b) I need to adjust my spending habits anyway, as that is largely what got me into this mess!

Idawn The "spendy bug" always seems to rear its ugly head in spring, doesn't it?! (Not just with you, I mean in general!) I think we all tend to "hibernate" in winter (at least those of us with real winters). And as you say, weddings and other social occasions tend to happen in the warmer months. I'm going to be a bad WIRR here, but how about NOT sending that extra third-check payment to debt? Maybe split it between the wedding and the upcoming expenses instead? It doesn't matter if it takes you another paycheck to win your race. Just a thought, I know you have a great grasp on the financials. And your wedding is right around the corner now!

FFBC and Idawn Thanks so much for your input, I appreciate it enormously. That's exactly how I was feeling, but I needed "validation". Above all I don't want to "shaft" my dear friend. She gave me my first teaching opportunity after that disastrous MS job.
Long story short ... I emailed her last night, and she's absolutely fine with it. So she'll either ask the association to find somebody else to share that night class with, or do the class herself (she's still thinking about it). Either way, she knows I'll fill in for her if she needs me to.
Many thanks to both of you for giving me the inner strength to do that! Globally I feel greatly relieved.
