DebtHeaven-It is nice to know I am not nuts with the whole "feelings of weird and scary" I posted those feelings to see if anyone else was in the same boat and to let others know they are not alone if they are feeling them. It is so weird to be looking forward to something so much, working so hard for it and then for it to suddenly be over... it is like you are left bereft. I wonder if that is why people turn around and go right back to where they were in some cases. It took me a very long time (for me) to work through those emotions. I still struggle on occasion. I am super vigilant about not going back to where we were but, at the same time, have loosened the reins a little. It is a delicate balance. We are working toward major savings so that gives me a focus as well, just not as intense as the debt repayment since we are enjoying a bit of breathing space (like buying Kiss concert tickets for waaaay too much but am looking forward to the experience) You have worked intensely hard for many years (certainly more than me!!! I marvel at all of you who have worked so hard for so long and stuck with your goals!!) at your races and you need to sit back and reflect on the fact that you have done an amazing job. Don't try and analyse your feelings about it all... just allow them to be. I think part of the debt repayment journey are the lessons we learn during it. Give yourself some time with your new bunny. You still have to grieve for your departed pet and that might take a while. Don't pressure yourself. One day you will just look at that ball of black fluff and his little nose and ears and tail and you will feel the love. Happy mother's day to everyone on the list, be your kids human or fur-kids!

FFBC I really appreciate your thoughts. You say: I wonder if that is why people turn around and go right back to where they were in some cases. I think this is very astute. I think it's also why as soon as I finish one race I start another. Even now, when I'm not officially "racing"! So I'm rethinking my decision to "race" that 9.5K reno loan. After working all afternoon in the garden (parts of which are a real mess) I think I'm going to treat us to a gardener to do some maintenance (the things we don't do) for the first time in six years. We do most things ourselves but I don't want DH up on a ladder with a chainsaw, and some things really need cutting back. We used to have somebody in every other year but with trying to keep costs down, we haven't since 2005 when we were married (the party was in our garden). I cleaned out the garden shed and lean-to today for three hours, and got rid of four bags of "stuff". We realized the shed / lean-to roof is leaking, so DH will need to replace it. So I think I will use a few hundred for those two projects, and try to save the rest. That will feel like a real "reward", and it should be affordable. Enjoy your concert!

Thanks Idawn! I'm excited! I will call the gardener tomorrow or Tuesday. He is a neighbor's grandson, he just started his own company and I saved the flyer he put in our mailbox. FFBC Thanks also about the bunny ... I know you are right.

Yay for over $5,000 paid bubbleepink!
I spent part of the day cleaning out my closets (tops/shirts) and I feel so good! I'm going to be donating a bunch of stuff and there were actually a few pieces that are worthy of selling, so hopefully I can make some fun money. I'll tackle the pants/jeans/skirts next weekend.

ldawngirl - I didn't even notice!!!! I posted so quickly before and I wasn't paying attention.
BIG NEWS: Over Easter Break my boyfriend of 8 years proposed! He asked, I said yes! We had picked out and he purchased a ring in December when we were home for Christmas and had his Sister bring it to him in Alberta when she and her mom came over for Easter. We are really happy! We have been talking about a lot of things recently and really there are some areas that we could use help with.
As a recap- we lived at home in Toronto with our parents after school (we are both teachers). He was working at a local car dealership while also teaching at a college in the area. I was doing some freelance tutoring and on EI because the company I was working for went out of business in Sept 2009. With the scarcity of teaching jobs in Ontario (I applied to over 100 jobs from sept 2009-July 2010) we decided we would try our luck west and applied to a school in Northern Alberta where a friend of ours was working. Of course less than a week after I signed the papers for my new car we were offered jobs in Alberta. So we parked his car (a manual transmission which I never bothered to learn how to drive - also heavily modified) and we drove my car west.
We have no plans to set a date quite yet since we don't know where we are going to be job wise for the next few years. I hope that we can set a date for 2013. For now we are looking at getting a joint bank account and CC. We are both quite diligent with our CC purchases, and our individual cards get paid off in full each month. The problems we are facing now is going back and forth with who owes who what and when. It is becoming quite annoying.
My question is: How do you deal with semi-joint finances? I want to keep my own chequing account, but he thinks its better to just merge everything.
Enjoying having a DF!

Congrats BP! That's incredible news! Enjoy the engagement glow!
As for the finances, DF and I have combined our finances, but we keep the credit cards separate. Well, I have my cc, as DF just finished bankruptcy so he doesn't have any, but when he can, he'll get a secure cc in his name only. I really don't believe in doing joint cc as you can never be 100% careful with your own credit rating.
As for the chequing, I've heard couples having completely separate finances and everything is split 50/50 and others (like DF and I) who join our finances and look at it as our pool of money. It doesn't matter who brought in more, it's our money together. I think there are positives and negatives to both. It really is just what works for you and your DF and what you're comfortable with. If you want to keep your own chequing, then perhaps you can have a joint chequing that you each transfer a specific amount of money into to pay the joint expenses and then the leftover money in your personal account is yours to spend as you wish. I found when moving in with DF and combining finances when we got engaged, it took awhile to get into a groove. So just try a few things, see what works and tweak as necessary.

BP - congratulations (and Karma) to you and DF.
DH and I work on yours, mine, ours. We each have the same amount put into our personal accounts to spend as we choose and the rest goes into a joint account to pay bills and save. DH has his own cc with a very low limit, I chose not to have one of my own. He is responsible for paying for his cc out of his do whatever he wants money.

Shoutouts! Zsdebt- Congrats on the new 0! Glad to hear the cc #3 will be going down again soon – that sounds like a win! Not sure if you noticed, but you hit $20k paid off with this update, that's amazing!!! Debtheaven- How exciting that the boiler loan will be gone in just a couple months! ffinbc- I’ve been looking forward to being debt free, but now you guys are scaring me! Just teasing. Besides, once my cc race is done, there’s the truck/student loan/RV race just ahead! Idawngirl- You’ve been an awesome cheerleader, thank you so much. Its really appreciated! bubbleepink- Woo hoo for paying off $5000! That’s fantastic! Congratulations on your engagement!! As far your finances, it really comes down to whatever makes you both comfortable. Some couples do three accounts – his, hers, theirs. Each person contributes to the joint account, which covers household expenses. Whatever you have left is yours to spend how you wish. Other couples split the bills and each pays their share that way. We have everything combined, and it works for us.

Bubblee Congratulations on your engagement! What fabulous news!!! We do the yours-mine-ours things too, but the other way around. We have our paychecks deposited into our private accounts, but we auto-transfer the lion's share into a joint household account which pays for everything but our (DH's and mine) haircuts, clothes, cell phones and the occasional lunch out. We each have a checkbook and credit card on our personal accounts, as well as a checkbook (which I keep) and two credit cards (one each) on our joint account.

It looks like I'll have an average of 10.5 hours a week, which is fantastic! Thanks for all your juju!!! Y'all rock! VIRTUAL CHAMPAGNE ALL AROUND FROM BUBBLEE AND ME

Yay DH! What fabulous news! Will that work with your current schedule?

|
Post by debtheaven on May 9, 2011 15:59:58 GMT -5
Idawn I currently have no more contracts, so no fixed schedule (except Thursdays and my night class). I will have a permanent contract at the new job. So I told them I'd set my schedule to suit their needs, and then continue to be available to the other places on the other days.
They want me to work Mondays and Thursdays, which would be perfect for me. I warned the Far Away Job that that could happen when they hired me in February, and she said it was fine. I'll only have two or three Thursdays left there by September. There is another teacher who can do them (the one who covered for me when I was in the UK) or I can switch days. But since there are no contracts in adult ed, it's totally acceptable for teachers to change schedules if they get a permanent contract.
It works both ways. These places all refuse to give contracts for adult ed, so they understand that a contract job takes precedence. I have a great relationship with the woman who runs that adult ed program so I will give her three months' notice, and two options (ideally, I will be able to switch my day there to Tuesdays. And if not, S can take over my classes).
ETA: Plus, it looks like I will still keep my Wednesdays free for DS3 (except for the night class and a private student). Ideally I'd like to do that for two more years till he's done with MS. Plus, the school is a 15-min train ride from my house!!!
I feel like I've won the lottery LOL!

Minnesota-Don't be scared! It is a good thing. I am just glad I mentioned it and am not alone in my feelings of it. I thought I was off the wall to not be absolutely ecstatic about being consumer debt free.

ldawngirl: I love cleaning out my closets! So I know how good the feeling is. Now I have try and curb my desire to purchase more clothes! lol. bubblepink: CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!! At the moment by bf and I share a credit card - look into the MBNA smartcash. We put all our joint purchases on there ie. groceries, furniture etc. You get 3% cashback on all groceries and gas purchases and 1% on the other. This has worked really well for us, as we don't have a joint account. All we do is split the monthly cc bill. Maybe consider doing this first? I don't plan on merging my account until we have mortgage payments. debtheaven Congrats on the job!!!!!! ;D Minnesotagirl Thanks for the update! I love all the exciting news!! I am so happy that I hit the $20K! Took a lot of hardwork and a great support group to pay all that down!

Thanks FFBC, Z's and Minnesota! I'm still flying LOL! My new head of dep't asked me and the other new teacher if we could go to (that other city) to do orals for incoming students. Yay Z's on the 20K mark! We can take some credit for the support, but it's YOUR hard work that got you there! Oh, El, WOW! Just WOW! I think Bank of Mom is right behind you with about 800! Minnesota your tag line makes me realize how time just flies ...

Yes I remember that Minnesota! We close on the new rental on Wednesday, so the bank unblocked our loan and sent the money to the RE lawyer. So today our debt more than doubled. It's just under 80K. I still think it was a wise move but it hurts to see the numbers. Here they are: * 350 @ 2.7%, 155/mo, 2 months left (new boiler) * 9,485 @ 4.3%, 186/mo, 59 months left (rental reno loan) *29,028 @ 4.0%, 586/mo, 56 months left (rental mortgage) *41,000 @ 3.5%, 293/mo, 180 months left (new rental mortgage) I'll be glad when the boiler loan is gone, because the others sure aren't going away anytime soon. We still have 3K set aside for the building reno. I'll know more about that on Wednesday. The gardener is coming for an estimate next Friday.

Wow lots happening on the message boards. It's amazing what we miss when life takes over. Congratulations to those who require it and way to go to the others. ;D My kitchen has been taken over by my plants for the garden, baby chicks.( a new thing, hatching our own.) Got 2 out of six eggs. Spent Like crazy but only 1 big thing needed and that was 500.00 for a hay rake for our tractor. We do about 2 acres of land by hand and we decided that if we get a hay rake it would be so much easier than raking it all in to piles. But it will still be done by quad and trailer. So that required new quad tires for 179.00. Hubby bought a dirt bike for the oldest girl 500.00 but he can ride it too. Then we thought we had to get a new fridge because of the sounds it was making. Nope defrosted it and it purrs nicely now, no growling. Our big credit card went up because we bought a stand up deep freezer with a lock for 750.00. I specifically asked for one with a lock because my youngest made a comment to the sales lady that it would be a nice place to hide. : Bought new work shoes and coat for hubby, some summer clothes for the girls at the Salvation army. Some of it new with tags. ;D So all I got was some new socks and a few perennials to fill in my small flower beds and the left over pea gravel to put under the deck. Working on losing 10 lbs then I have a brand new wardrobe. Shop in my own closet. Just a question for financiallyfreeinbc: Since you are in the same cold area like me (close to it). What type of fruit trees do you have? If you have any. Once things settle down I'll post the damage for the spending

Alice-We only have a couple of apple trees and some raspberry canes. We live "in the country" and have to be careful of attracting bears. DH won't let me plant other fruit trees for that reason.
Upside-it has been raining and most of the snow is gone. Downside-it has been raining A LOT!!! C'mon sun!!!
