Bramoney, what great news to get a raise. It sounds like you are getting things worked out. I don't like under the house either so I totally get it ... Great update, you've gotten more than 2/3's paid off. Will your next update drop you below 10k? That's a great milestone, too..... Good luck with all that you are doing. Forward, I'm going to think on it. The burner issue is real, and the heavy duty stove I want (and put off for years) is pretty costly, and if it broke down like this cheapie electric has, I'd feel so bad. They sell heavy duty burners for the yard, and that may be a good in between. I'm still trying to find out if I can get rid of the screw on weight and put the drop on weight on the "better" canner I have. It steams up great, but I can't stick my hand in that venting steam to screw on this ball that wants to come apart, and with any kind of mitt I can't screw it on and the ball comes apart... What a poor concept

UPDATE Forwardwego $18200 4/12/13 ($36780 6/19/11 STP64, S154)
this update puts me over 50% paid again, and $18200 feels much better than $19365 because mentally that rounded up to $20K. Bramoney, Woman on a mission, soon to have paid off $25K, which I think earns an angel Congratulations on your raise!! 3js sounds like you have several options on the stove & burners. If I'm understanding right, and if I get a vote, I'd vote for getting the outside burner as the next step. Might help your stove last longer, and maybe the outside burner would have other applications too? Casey Kasem said "keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars" Bramoney says "keep your chin up and keep knocking down your debt" Bramoney you could be the WIRR DJ Elderkind says hello, and hopes to catch back up with us here. In the meantime she asked me to pass on her best wishes. shoutout to nckls, ffhope, and others who are away...would love to see you again kicking debt to the curb.

Forward, thanks for the input. You are right, it could have many uses, and keep the house cooler when the summer heats up. Please send Elderkind a hug for me . Your update was inspiring, and as usual, you sprinkle some good sense on it. Our total is just under 50k, so I'm rounding up, too... I was going to work on it, but now I have a good reason to...

ATTENTION: CAPTAINS UPDATE
Muffyinthe Red 04/15/2013 $80,694.61 (9/9/08 $128,662.37 S373, SU395, PRO 77, 81, 86, 137) NC | Paid off since joining $47,967.76 Percentage: 37.3% | | | | | Paid off this month: $870.16 | | | | | | Medical Bills $1,422.64 - 89.80 = $1,322.84 | | | | | CU Savings - $1,704.03 | | | | | |
I am moving in the right direction just really slowly. We went to WI the end of March and are going back the end of April for the birth of my first grand daughter. But all this travelling is hell on paying the bills. But the good news is the GE loan is scheduled to be paid off on May 6th. I am so excited because I will then be able to snowball the payment to a charge card not being raced and that will be paid off in two months then on to the other charges.
I hope everyone is doing well and either got their tax refund or have paid there taxes today. I had to pay a little just $207 and got our refund from state back in February, which paid our HOA the beginning of March!
Hopefully everyone is enjoying April flowers.

3jsmon31 Thank you…..thank you. You know, I don’t know if my payments for next month will bring me in at $10,000 of debt or under, but what if I make that a goal for me? That would be great, I will work on it! Hopefully my DH makes some monies this month that would help. Forwardwego Thank you……for the Angel, that is so sweet. You make my day! 50% paid off, wow that is great! I want to just like you when I grow up! WIRR DJ……I could rock that! ElderKind……how nice she said hello to us. I remember when I first met her back in 2007 when I first join WIRR. We met at theUniversity she was working at on a Saturday morning for a WIRR Meeting. She is such a nice person with good information. We should do another meeting, that was aTexas meeting at the time. CarolinaKat: good luck on your telephone interview.

forwardwego I am saving up money for the summer months when I do not have a steady job so that we can make sure all of our bills are paid. Then everything is going to the lowest individual loan that we have (and can individually pay on), which is in SL 4.

Red Ruby 4/15/2013 $80,253.44 (1/21/2009 $163,872.74) S561
Went backwards but I am finishing up my remodel in my kitchen. I am tired of looking at the half done junk. Also my cooktop finally quit. Only thing I regret is I over spent on the new fridge.

quick update nasagreen 4/17/13 $85,181.00 (7/21/07 $144,371.69)
Credit cards are still not so hot, we've had a lot of unscheduled expenses come up (truck repairs, boat repairs, septic repairs, etc). It put a kink in my plans. The Citi cards are still my main focus, plus my husband's truck. I'm paying $200 extra on the truck each month in addition to the $735.68 payment. This month I went down $934.64 so I'm happy, even if my CC's didn't reduce and went up instead by $85.00

UPDATE Forwardwego $18200 4/12/13 ($36780 6/19/11 STP64, S154)
this update puts me over 50% paid again, and $18200 feels much better than $19365 because mentally that rounded up to $20K. Afternoon All, I was on vacation last week so I'm late on my monthly update for April. As a result the changes to my car loan below reflect 2 payments since my last set of numbers (plus the monthly extra I'm adding to completely pay off the car by the end of the year). Sometimes I feel like I'm not moving the needle but looking at these totals not too shabby for two months progress. It will be slower moving forward though since the bulk of the past two months was thanks to tax return and year end bonus :-( - A.

Just a quick update: My job is picking up and I've been having to leave home early and get home late because of it. But just as my main job is picking up, we heard a rumor that the company may not be able to stay afloat. Currently, the owner is using personal finances to cover the bills. He basically needs 3x of what one of the other girls is billing. With my schedule picking up, we are at about 2x but nowhere near the 3x. We're all assuming we have thru May at the very least. If we end up closing, I'm just going to suck up the costs of breaking my lease and get back to doing contract work. Part of me says I should start doing therapy on my own but I just don't like this area enough to want to start that up. If I pursue that idea I would have to leave here and find a place closer to the beach and my friends.
I need to post an update. I feel like I'm sliding backwards. My 0% bills are dropping but the interest bearing CC is climbing. I had to get my a/c fixed, random other repairs, and a new battery in my car. All said and done, repairs on my car this year so far equaled roughly 4 car payments. Hopefully I'm done with car repairs for a couple months! I'm still wondering if I would be better off getting something new, more reliable, and with better gas mileage!
It's been a stressful week on the personal/work front and then with all the tragedies in the news. Sometimes I just think "Why can't we all just get along?".....just a basic concept that will never be realized. Have a good week everyone.

Well, here is my update. And ladies, it ain't pretty... BUT...I have managed to go up and down with my debt over the past year and a half. Everything that I have charged has been paid off so my total credit card debt has stayed relatively flat. At one point, I was up to $15k in credit card debt. I would like to start keeping better track of what I'm doing so I'm going to start posting my updates again. hey SOUTH. i've seen some good updates. welcome back Nckls! fowardwego - tell elderkind hola for me! speech - what would be your motivation for starting your own practice? what would be your motivation to go back to contract work? are you looking to settle some where & not worry about where your next assignment will be? do you want the challenge of making your own practice successful or do you see that as too much at your stage in life? you don't have to answer any of those questions as they are personal & i just threw them out as food for thought. starting out on your own & going back to contract work are 2 VERY different lifestyles & challenges & making that decision depends on where you are & what you vision for a future. FWIW, i think you'd be successful starting your own business. as for me, things are just moving along. i'm still furloughed but the first unemployment check came through last friday so i'm not dead broke. during this time i was able to get my divorce decree signed by the judge finally. over the weekend i got a notice from the AG's office that the child support account is finally setup & so those funds will start coming in shortly. of course the ex-DH is now 2 months behind because of waiting for the judge to sign the final decree but i know it'll get worked out. i have been furloughed for 5 weeks now & out of all the application & resume submissions i have been called for interviews with 4 different recruiting firms, all of which had NOT landed me an interview with a prospective employer. it's a crazy week though. i finally got a call from 1 recruiter yesterday & have an interview with a prospect on friday afternoon. i had jury duty scheduled for today & when i got to the address on my summons they said there was a mistake, that they only have trials at that location on thurs. & fri. i called the number on the citation & they exempted me so i wouldn't be held in contempt for not showing. on my drive to jury duty i got a call for an interview at one of the hospitals for a job that i really, really want & would be a perfect next step from what i was doing. that made me excited & anxious all at the same time. that interview is friday morning. and last but not least, tomorrow afternoon i'm scheduled to visit a school i'm thinking about putting DS in starting in the fall. phew....who knew that NOT working was so tiring.

Hey Ladies -
I need advice!
So I've been staring at the CC#1 debt in my race - the one that is due to my father's terminal illness - for a week or so now and I just want it to be gone already. To get that done I am considering withdrawing the amount from my Roth IRA. I understand that withdrawing contributions is tax and penalty free so long as I don't take out the earnings. I'm just not sure if it is wise to pull money out of my long-term savings to solve this problem when I have a good income and can keep working away at the debt as I have been and it's not like this withdrawal will payoff all my debt (just my most expensive one). On the other hand, I am still young (30 yo) so have lots of time until retirement, the amount will not completely drain my Roth and I do have other 401K retirement savings.
Am I just getting impatient or is there something to be said for paying of the high interest rate debt and freeing up more cash flow to snowball into my student loans and savings?
The numbers:
Before Withdrawal Roth IRA - $25,446.29 401K - $38,079.84 Total - $63,526.13
After Withdrawal Roth IRA - $7,793.29 401K - $38,079.84 Total - $45,873.13
What do you guys think? Good idea? Bad idea?

I don't normally advocate taking from retirement accounts to get rid of debt. It's robbing the future to pay the past. That being said, if there is a difficult emotional connection for you with your father's death and that particular debt, the emotional factor may be something to be considered. A retirement account does not necessarily outweigh something that is causing depression, for example.

Bad idea? My short answer is, no, I don't think you should take money away from your retirement, although I understand the emotional desire to do so. I would recommend that you focus on paying down that debt the fastest because it comes with the highest interest rate in addition to the emotional weight of it. If you have posted it before, I may have missed it - but what is your strategy for getting rid of this debt? You have 10 different student loans listed. Can they be consolidated? What does that do to their interest rate? I don't know if you have all federal loans or a mix of federal and private, but have you ran the numbers for some of the different repayment options? If you are eligible for a loan forgiveness program, then I would do whatever I could to stick to the required plan. But if these are just regular old fashioned "you're on the hook until they're gone" student loans, I'd look into extending your repayment term. Not because you want to spend more time paying this debt, but because you want to lower your monthly minimum so you have more cash to throw at your CC debt. When it is gone, you can snowball that payment towards your car and then the student loans. Which brings me to the car... holy smokes! For your last update you said: DebtFreeRedux: 4/1/13 $216,958.05 (1/30/12 $282,500.50) Debt Interest Rate Balance 2/7/13 Balance 4/1/13 Difference Car Loan 4.9% $54,898.96 $52,633.09 -$2,265.87 Unsecured LOC 19.25% $0 $0 $0 SL#1 3.01% $12,802.96 $12,752.82 -$50.14 SL#2 4.50% $9,448.90 $9,352.89 -$96.01 SL#3 2.50% $18,737.50 $18,661.84 -$75.66 SL#4 2.50% $19,320.24 $19,185.6 -$134.64 SL#5 2.00% $28,638.38 $28,363.91 -$274.47 SL#6 4.55% $3,773.41 $3,714.97 -$58.44 SL#7 4.55% $5,925.93 $5,834.14 -$91.79 SL#8 5.0% $10,030.67 $9,922.71 -$107.96 SL#9 2.375% $14,032.15 $13,989.54 -$42.61 SL#10 2.375% $24,969.35 $24,893.54 -$75.81 CC#1 11.99% $18,046.00 $17,653.00 -$393.00 Total $220,624.45 $216,958.05 -$3,666.40 Looking at the changes since February, you seem to have paid off a big chunk of your car and a more modest chunk of your CC debt. (I'm ignoring the SL payments here, because I assume you are paying the minimum, so we can't change that unless you are eligible for a different repayment program) It looks like you send $1250 per month to the car people and $300 per month to the CC people. If you have any flexibility in your minimum payments, I would try to switch those numbers around. That's a lie. I'd try to sell the car. Are you upside down on it? I don't know your income, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say you can't afford that car. At least not right now. If you can't get rid of the car, I'd try to free up some money from your other obligations so you can pay off the CC faster. My Phil script doesn't seem to be working right now, but that $17,000 you are looking at borrowing would be worth about $1 million and change in 37 years when you reach retirement age. Don't throw away $1 million because your heart is hurting.
