It's become dogma for both major parties.

A huge amount of people didn't like President Bush. A huge amount of people wanted change from what we had been electing. Republicans put up McCain because they didn't see him as part of the "machine" & to an extent they were right. McCain didn't vote with the "machine" & never has. He votes what he thinks is right, which is kind of rare in Washington. Palin was much younger & a woman. That filled two of the boxes that you want to fill (if all the boxes are checked you usually win).
The problem was that Palin being from Alaska (mostly considered the most rugged of the states) was open to a lot of attacks. Her speeches opened her up to more. Finally McCain because of his age was look at like a Washington insider. It was a match made in hell & was never going to get any of them elected.

The problem is that Palin comes across as a complete idiot. I liked McCain and would have voted for him, but you're right, he's old, and his running mate was not up to the job.
And before the conservatives/republicans start swarming, I'm not really sure Obama's up to the job, either, but I saw him a better choice than Palin.

I'm not saying I like Palin, however, McCain was the deciding factor in me voting for Obama. Yes, I voted for Obama. Just like the 2nd Bush term...won't be making that mistake again. McCain just irked me from the get-go.

Palin was a good idea until she opened her mouth and spoke off script.

If the republicans don't shut up about redoing Medicaid and SS until after the election Obama will be re-elected for a second term. Seniors vote.

It was a horrible choice. The worst in my life. All four participants were/are less than capable. McCain is wobbly at best, and old. The rest? Forget about it.

I'm not sure McCain/Palin was a 'mistake' because I'm fairly sure almost any republican would have been defeated by any democrat.

Why can't republicans just admit
In private most repubs do admit to mistakes, i.e Dan Quayle, Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Glen Beck, Biil O'Reilly...and etc and etc..

I was registered as a republican and couldn't even think of voting for McCain. The guy was a POW for how long? Who knows what kind of mental issues he has from being a POW, let alone letting him in charge of the army. The guy puts himself out as a warmonger not a patriot, no matter what war or how it was started he would want to be associated with it. As far as Obama winning, it was all based on the peacock effect.

The Democrats could have won that election from ANY Republican.
Hell, they could have won with a hack who has organized crime connections.

Republicans and Democrats are tantamount to organized crime.

Barrack Hussein Obama was and remains the most easy to defeat Democrat ever. The 'mistake' was not running a clear conservative alternative to the Obama agenda. Instead we had a guy firing his senior campaign staff for using Obama's middle name, ignoring Obama's connections to domestic terrorists, and his extremist racist pastor and spiritual mentor, as well as the entire contents of Obama's two naval-gazing books (one of which named after the aforementioned extremist pastor's sermon that Obama allegedly didn't hear and possibly written by the aforementioned terrorist).

I left the Republican Party over 20 years ago, mostly due to state and local issues. Yes, McCain was a mistake. The people were tired of Bush, and too many people saw McCain as Bush III.

Yeah...That damned old coot warmonger might have done something crazy like bomb a foreign country or two without congressional approval or something. I do agree with your first sentence though. Even considering the same 'ole stuffed suit republican field, I was actually surprised McCain won the primaries.

McCain wasn't a mistake, but Palin was.
Honestly, Bush was so hated that whomever the Democrats put up would have a leg-up against whomever the republicans put up. So many people just wanted a change. Also, I believe that Obama has a really good chance because he is young and beautiful and came across as pretty darn charming during the campaign. You have to admit that so many people are stupid and vote according to whoever "feels" better to them.
I'm not sure being black won the election for him, but it certainly didn't hurt him. I think if he was 100% white, but just as good looking and came across as smooth and fresh, he would have won also. I don't think Obama would have won against Ronald Regan in 1984.
I really feel that the democrats had to screw up badly to lose in '08. I think Hilary would have beaten McCain - just because the country wanted to get some distance from the republicans. McCain was the best choice for the Republicans, but in order to get there he had to be lovey-dovey with Bush for a few months, and that soured some people.

Yeah, you don't want to tell the voters the truth that things need to change and some of those changes might hurt....much easier to keep passing the buck until there are no other options and then complain that nothing was done before then....

Republicans did admit that they were wrong thinking they could work with Obama/Biden and resolve the budget issues... Althought Ole Joe keeps saying" The Gap Is Getting Smaller"...whatever the heck that means?

I agree wholeheartedly. Republicans should be very open about the fact that seniors have to lose SS and Medicare. They are no other options. I would also throw in a tax cut for the rich just to be totally on the safe side.
