Hmmm.... I wonder if a statistical analysis would show that those who chose their stocks at the last minute do better than those that like to be first at the gate. Just joking, you guys, just joking.

EDZ long (3x short emerging markets)
Well, last week I had an also-ran. I reckon I just picked a horse from the wrong stable. So I'm going to use the same jockey, wearing the same silks, the same blanket, and the same saddle, but put 'em all on a little bit taller horse. There will be lots of blood on the track next week; the horse will also have to be something of a mudder.
Folks who make their choices just before the start do have the ability to incorporate anything that happens over the weekend into their thought process, but then (unlike a racing track where one owns the ticket no matter how the odds may change after the bet is placed) one can always change their mount right up until the gate opens, so here it really shouldn't make any difference whether one hits the betting window early or late.
Edit: I've only been to a racetrack once (except for the county fairs where I sometimes watch, but don't bet). I hated the fact that the odds changed right up to the time the gates opened. I mean I'd see a horse; looked good to me, four legs, two ears, one tail -- you know all that typical horse stuff. The odds against him were, oh let's say 20:1, so I'd go put my $5 (or whatever it was) on him to win. Then I'd get back to my seat and look up to find the odds had changed and now he/she was let's say 12:1. I'd be mad. It seemed crazy to me that they could change the odds on me after I placed my bet. The horse? Oh the horse would finish the race, but I don't ever remember having to learn how to go collect any money for a win.

SBS,......I've also given thought to what you just brought up. But I usually pick my horse late, because I'm a procrastinator (another word for lazy). In college, we use to have 5 week design problems; but some of us always waited and did our projects within the last few days (usually staying up all night)...and we still got good grades. Got more partying in that way.. LOL.
yclept, .....the difference between a race track and here is a bettor can buy a bunch of tickets on several horses... but here, Rovo won't sell us but one ticket.....& he probably pockets that $$$. LOL. and he insists we can't change our minds after the gong. But I've said this many times...he runs a great race.

It really was just a thought that fluttered through my head yesterday. As yclept said, horses can be changed at the last minute regardless of when it was first saddled. I usually wait until I can see the latest news and opinions (and to see what everyone else picked ); I'm too lazy to pick and then reevaluate closer to the starting gun shot.

SBS ... all kidding aside, perhaps true, late pickers may do better. But remember, anyone can still change their mind up to the market open. Check premarket activity and switch fast prior to 9:30 a.m. if deemed warranted.

Well, last week, I waited until the last minute, and then found that someone else took my horse's full twin brother! I usually play the 3x Russell 2000s, and there's two companies who provide those ETFs, and another poster picked the one I was going to choose (a Rydex ETF, I think), and I thought it would be bad form for me to choose the same thing only it being a ProShares ETF. So, I talked myself into a different play. (Didn't work out!)
Meanwhile, I'm making sure I keep a towel on in the jockey's locker room. SBS has a habit a sneaking in.

long BASFY (BASF - Chemical Manufacturing)
The stock has performed well relative too the market. If the market has an oversold bounce it should benefit although it's not oversold.

ONTY (long) Oncothyreon Inc. Healthcare/Drugs Located in Seattle, WA., 25 employees Stock closed Friday at $6.93 52 wk. high/low $6.99/$2.99 The company is focused mainly on the development of therapeutic products for the treatment of cancer. The technical stuff that I pull up for stock research look good. In fact, I researched 3 similar stocks tonight., couldn't decide; I was going to flip a coin. Couldn't find a 3 sided coin; so I picked the one that I thought might be higher on Friday. You'all have a good week.

I'll go with SRTY - Long.
It'll be interesting to watch how the four (so far) 3X ETFs will compare this week.

I shot my horse from last week, so I got another nag. CELL, (BrightPoint)long. They provide supply chain solutions for the mobile and cell industry. Sorta like logistics for communications. They have been underperforming for a while, but now may be their time.

Rovo,...it's so very rare that you mis-type anything. But, it's sort of my nature to be a skeptic; some of my grey hairs came from managing project managers at a very large Architectural firm. Besides running my own projects... I read all incoming/ & outgoing correspondence to clients. Good contest. Good race. Life is good. I just got a phone call. Golf game tomorrow afternoon ( a foursome ). I always win ( highest score ). cheers.

The purpose of playing golf (so far as I can tell -- I gave it up a long time ago as a waste of time and money) is to hit the ball. So obviously those who hit the ball most often are getting more fun out of the game and thus better value for their time and money than those who hit it less often. Using the scoring method employed in the game, someone like me who prefers taking a walk in the woods with his dog and therefore taking no strokes whatsoever is having a much better round than anyone actually swinging a club. The gap up this morning is certainly doing a world of good for those of us playing the dark side. I kind of wish I had added to my short holdings at open this morning. But then, about a third of my investment money is in the market, and all of it (except TBT) is short stocks in double or triple leveraged ETFs, so maybe I've got enough eggs in that basket for now. You never know, the market might take a last-gasp effort at a "summer rally" and try to shake us shorts out. I'd just as soon not have to endure that with my entire portfolio.

yclept,.... you're so right about golf... I joke often about my high scores is a better value for the $$. My golf history: I think I played a couple of games between primary & basic flight schools ( mid 50's).... then didn't pick up a golf club for probably 50 years; then a few years ago, a friend asked me to drive his golf cart ( I did twice )...then borrowed clubs from him for a couple of games... then got hooked; bought clubs at a flea market. Good at golf now? I shoot in the 70's...... do better than that on the 2nd nine holes..... that's a joke. And I also enjoy market technicals....(not a joke).

“Golf is a good walk spoiled.” -- Mark Twain
“Golf is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.” -- Winston Churchill
and an adjunct to SBS's slogan: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” -- Mark Twain
