Name calling directly is still against CoC right? Someone is acting rather female doggy right now. Yea, well I get that way when there's no chocolate or wine available. Since I won't be home for three more hours I'm pretty much like... (BTW - I didn't technically call anyone anything. I believe I used an adjective, not a noun so ).

In my area we still have a foreclosure backlog. It's absolutely ridiculous how long some people are in the houses after they've stopped paying their mortgage.
Prices still haven't recovered. The banks are still holding onto inventory in the hopes that prices will recover (I don't see this happening for at least 2-3 more years unless the market takes another downturn).
We sold our house last year (after living in it for a decade) for a huge cash loss. The house we purchased was also at a loss to the owner who had purchased it in foreclosure from that previous owner.
But hey, the state is starting up another round of down payment assistance programs to low income families. That should fix everything, right?

A secret army of modest women hackers, using their 'powers' for good? Easy as pie. Like that bubbly character on 'Criminal Minds', who can hack into a school bus in Sri Lanka on demand. "Penelope, we need a list of all 18-to-25-year-old men who purchased a red blanket at a Walmart within 3 miles of my present location." "Not to worry, my sweet. I'm just pulling up the Walmart transaction database... entering the parameters... cross-referencing... and voila! Three names. Marcus Spink, 21. James Fezel, 25. And Obhern Weir, 19." "Thanks, Penelope." "Anything for you, mon capitaine!" I'm not sure how these screenwriters can actually put pen to paper without cracking up, but I guess they manage it. You know darn well how they'd handle it. The actresses they'd hire wouldn't know a single line of code, but they'd have other well developed "attributes". Probably never even pulled an all nighter powered by mountain dew and M&M's to get a project turned in on time. and, AND they'll have perfectly manicured long fingernails yet still be able to type faster and more accurately than whatever cyber criminal they're hacking against. The fanboys will eat it up. Ratings will be good for the first few months until the audience gets tired of the eye candy (unless there actually is some good writing involved), they'll have a kidnapping, jump the shark a few times, then the series will fade into oblivion because no one really took the premise seriously in the first place. So much potential, wasted...

We could talk about thai and foot rubs? No! I can't stand having my feet touched....let alone rubbed.
Now everybody can weigh in on what a dork I am.
Didn't need that confession to know that already, just saying...

Ok.
Got home last night (worked a little late) and DH was downstairs in the den. He had unpacked his final bin and was going through his cabinets pitching stuff.
I was so proud of him! Sat down at my desk and decided to purge a few more things of my own. We worked in companionable silence for about 30 minutes, sometimes just holding something up with a raised eyebrow and a nod or shake of the other's head would send it into the pitch pile.
Had a large Rubbermaid tote full of stuff to toss! So excited (doing a little happy dance). There is, of course, his pile of doom to sort and file and one bin left of filing stuff (from before the move that I decided to go through and purge most of before packing it back in the filing cabinet).
I have a four day weekend scheduled off coming up. Gonna make a list and knock it out of the park!

DD has an interview for tomorrow morning! She told the woman she was going away, so as not to waste everybody's time. The woman said no problem, if it works out, DD can start when she gets back! (sending all the good mojo I can - do I remember correctly that your DD went for hospitality mgmt.?)

You didn't choose to... Which is a valid and perfectly appropriate choice... But I hate when people say they 'can't' because I feel compelled to tell them how they can Just doing my part people But sometimes "can't" = knowing that emotionally/mentally this would be a really, really, REALLY bad thing to do. Basically, if I homeschooled, CPS would be visiting me at somepoint. I do not have the patience to teach. Repeatedly going over a topic, trying to find different ways to explain it, for me, is the 5th circle of Hell. (6th is shopping with my kids at Target) (The Captain Beth - she gets me, she really, REALLY gets me!) ETA - we literally posted at the same time!)

So why is ___________ (you know who) allowed to _________________ (you know what)? I seriously don't get it. It's obviously a troll or a liar or both. Why is this acceptable to the mods? Yet people who call said person on said behavior are warned? Why are the trolls protected? I fully expect this post to be deleted and get an email shaming but at least a couple of y'all will see it and maybe can answer me. You know any lawyer will tell you, suspicion and certainty are two very different standards. Not saying it applies here but something to think about. With respect to the warnings, regardless of what anyone may think, we do try to moderate evenly (acknowledging we are human and have individual variations). If certain comments would evoke a moderator response when directed to a well known, well respected long time poster, then we try to respond in kind when the same comments are directed to a newer poster. Just saying.

The Captain: Based on your anecdote from Reply #5, you now hold the dubious honour of being the only female (ex-)hacker among the literally hundreds of hackers and ex-hackers I've known. You've besmirched the upstanding reputation of your gender, madam. Next thing you'll be telling me there are female trolls out there too. And female boneheads jumping mountain bikes off the side of cliffs. Gentle sir, I take exception to your characterization. If anything I would say I've enhanced my gender's reputation. The fact that you don't know how many of us (or former us) there are out there speaks very well to our ability to keep our lips zipped. Consider the male to female ratio in that particular subset. In an area where protecting your identity is very important, that just adds an extra layer of paranoia. Besides, in a way we had permission to do our worst best. I wasn't that brilliant but it was fun to see some of my peeps surprise the EDP director. I enjoy what I do for a living, but there are times...I'd love to do cyber security but realize that I'm so far behind it will never happen as a second career.

Peeps just don't know how to appreciate a good avatar these days, just saying... But, but, those voices in my head!! And, and, that song keeps repeating.....Every step you take every breath you make...we'll be watching you" Oh, OH...now I get it. Don't worry. He's just a harmless nursebot who had his healthcare chip removed for a short period of time, turning him into a lethal killing machine. Really, he's (mostly) harmless. Just don't get on his bad side. Plus, he gives awesome hugs, kinda like me . If you have grandkids and haven't watched Big Hero Six yet with them I highly recommend it. I thought it was a very well done movie with some great messages. Others disagree so YMMV.

It's not fair to beat up on Ombud because as a decent person she's not going to throw the Grandkids out on the street (and I mean this). I'm pretty sure her DD knows that as well which is why baby #4 appeared no too long ago.
What concern's me more (besides the OP draining her own retirement security) is the example it's setting for the grandkids as far as being self supporting.

Then there's the tactic of only taking part of a statement out of context on purpose, or being deliberately obtuse. Or maybe making a strawman argument to justify your own position or actions. Or maybe you reply to a response that was directed at another poster or mis-quote someone else so we can spend 2-3 pages clarifying who stated what. And, if that fails throw in a repub or liberal insult or two to really drive home your well thought out arguments. (how many pages are we at?)

For what little comfort it's worth, most of the guys (and "guys" is an accurate term) who hack computer systems do it for the sake of seeing if they can do it, not to cause any mortal harm. Hacking an insecure system is like trying to solve a puzzle. Many see it as an intellectual challenge and an opportunity to earn some prestige. Seriously harming people is contrary to both ends. Typically a hacker wants some kind of payoff in terms of recognition for hacking a system. He wants the world to know that he was the first one clever enough to discover vulnerability X. I suspect this is where most of the problems come in, because Joe Hacker probably isn't going to be satisfied with just sending his findings to Chrysler and saying "please fix this". He's going to want to put out a video, source code, etc. online, making absolutely sure he gets his due credit. He feels justified since Chrysler becomes aware of the vulnerability at the same time as everyone else, recalls the affected units, and patches the firmware. But it's this interim period where the public is most vulnerable, because for that brief period everybody and their dog--some of whom are intent on mayhem and chaos--has a window opportunity to wreak havoc. In short, I'd expect stories like "Hacker Crashes Two Trains into Each Other" to be exceptionally rare. We're far more likely to see stories about hacker "demonstrations" not involving loss of life, or hacker how-to videos. Yea, I know you're right. There were only two of us chicks in the little cadre in college that used to hack our way into the university systems. It was ridiculously easy to set up dummy login screens to capture usernames and passwords that sent the data to a mule account and use that to access teacher and student accounts. 'Cause people mis-type their passwords all the time, right? Won't even go into what we would do with the Cobol compiler and the accounting systems. Most of the crew doing this were lab ops who promptly reported any weaknesses and we were always trying to one up each other in finding the next hole in the wall. I only know of one person who was truly malicious, but they were able to do some decent damage before they were caught. There's probably some spybot somewhere tagging me for saying this, but when I think about how much computers run our lives (think muni water filtration systems, mass transportation, bank systems, hell even the stock exchange) I realize we have far more vulnerabilities than most realize. I'm not smart enough to figure a lot of stuff out, but I firmly believe there has been stock market manipulation. How do you even design something to put those pieces together or even detect it?

Wow. When I ran my in home daycare I charged $20/day per child. I kept the same rates for 7 years and only took off on major holidays and maybe 2-3 other days per year for doctor appointments, etc. It got to the point where people were balking at paying my rate and I was competing with stay at home moms offering care for $10/day on Craigslist. I was making close to minimum wage running with 3-4 kids here each week. I can't fathom charging what some of you are paying for daycare. Around here it just wouldn't fly, most people seem to only be interested in the bottom line and don't seem to care about a high quality in home program. kids are expected to know so much before school now - it's all about learning and teaching at every age level. I'm starting to get concerned because DS still can't write or read, can't grip a pencil/crayon properly, and his sentences are still very simple. I wouldn't stress over it too much. Kids develop at different paces at all ages. Unless you have a real reason to think there's a problem (and teacher are pretty good at catching this from what I have observed) he'll "catch up" when he's ready.

Virgil Showlion - That thread was from, like - over two years ago - how did you even...oh nevermindthen. Yea, I knew you were in on the discussion, but forgot that others were the naysayers. I don't know if it's good or bad that my mind thinks this way, but I'm constantly running what if scenarios in my head. The possibilities are now endless. 1. Elevators 2. L trains (unmanned - run on computer) 3. Metra rail switches (again - automated). 4. Switch gates in the express lanes. It's appears to be all too easy to hack these computerized systems. All some psycho would have to do is flip a switch on a metra rail and route an express outbound train onto the same track as an express inbound train, and well - you get the picture. Or have someone electronically signal the inbound gates on the express lanes to open before the outbound lane traffic was cleared. Ugg. Why do I even think this way.

A really long-lived thread has to have several accusations of "intellectual dishonesty". Now if you were being honest with yourself, you would know that's false.

The Captain, we pay a flat fee for water based on the number of rooms in the house. Really? So granny who lives in the same 3-2 that she's been in for over 40 years and only does two loads of laundry a week pays the same as two families living in the same house with 8 kids (don't laugh - it's right across the street from me) who run sprinklers outside every day and wash several loads of laundry? Even if a house has an in-ground sprinkler system? No wonder I saw so many of those while visiting my friend a few years back. We've have metered water in some parts of the Chicago area for decades. I'm surprised it's taken some parts of CA so long, especially with the water shortages (and yes - I know the farmers use the most water). Thanks for clarifying, - interesting.
