When there are few jobs around, people don't have the option of being picky. At least McDonald's is hiring. Most places I go to have too few employees to do the job well. When things pick up again, I'm going to remember that my local McDonalds's always seems to have enough people to serve their customers.

I heard last night, I think on the PBS Newshour they are hiring an additional 10,000. And I just want to point out, they are hiring for more than counter and kitchen help. They are filling all sorts of positions.

I may have said that. I will not deny that I did. My firm, a Fortune 500 enterprise is hiring 2300 this year.

So you think there are a million job openings right now in the country? And that's just those that applied to McDonalds.

I cannot say for sure, I have not seen any numbers on job openings by industry sector. However, I just logged on to dice.com, an IT job site, and right there on the home page, they say there are over 77,000 job openings posted. Monsterjobs.com fancies itself as having millions of job postings. I was just on their web site, which does not indicate the number of open job listings, at least not on the home page.

So you think there are a million job openings right now in the country? And that's just those that applied to McDonalds. There probably are...it's just people don't want to move to them. There are still a shortage of workers in places like North Dakota, but for some reason people who live in areas like the southwest and southeast refuse to move there...

SF, how many of those 9 million unemployed are looking for IT jobs? Or are qualified. There aren't nearly enough jobs in this country to employ everyone who wants and needs one.

So you think there are a million job openings right now in the country? And that's just those that applied to McDonalds. Actually there are: There were 3.1 million job openings on the last business day of February 2011www.bls.gov/news.release/jolts.nr0.htm

You are fairly crazy if you think 3.1 million jobs would employ the 14 million unemployed.

Every job opening has qualifications required to land the job, not everyone meets all of them. We were traveling on MCD national hiring day and went to MCD. The person at the counter didn't offer us applications but a young woman came in and she asked her if she was there to apply. She was so the employee told another employee to take over the counter she had to interview now and took the young woman to another room.
To land one of those 62,000 jobs you need to be able to do the work, look average to good and be cheerful. I am not qualified, I can't stand that long and don't look that good or that cheerful.
We had one job opening at work for a lower level office worker and interviewed a lot of people. One is starting her first day in about 10 minutes but she was hard to find. The people applying didn't have basic skills like excel or couldn't do basic math. They were too old to work at fast food and not skilled enough for most other work. We need more jobs for people like them the smart or attractive workers can usually find something. Factory, warehouse and other lower skilled jobs are needed.

Are you one of those people that think an opening at a Wal-mart store isn't a job?

I'm guessing that a good portion of those million were teenagers looking for summer work, so I don't think that number is as frightening as it appears. While it sucks that teenagers aren't even able to get a job at mcdonalds, it isn't the end of the world since most of them are not living on their own trying to feed a family.

Actually there are: There were 3.1 million job openings on the last business day of February 2011www.bls.gov/news.release/jolts.nr0.htmPig, fairly just said according to these government stats there are more than 1 million jobs open. That's it. I don't know how they get these stats, but I do know that on most job boards you can find the same job posted multiple times usually by different recruiting firms and sometimes the real employer as well. So there aren't 3 to 5 or more distinct jobs, there's only one in some cases. Plus some jobs are posted as fishing expeditions and they don't hire anyone or interview anyone for months to years.

I dunno OP4L, it seemed pretty obvious to me that they were implying that there are more jobs than unemployed people.

Have not seen data on this one.
Or are qualified.
That is very subjective. I've seen job requirements asking for 3 to 5 years of experience, in software that is not even out of BETA. I have also seen(recently) job requirements mandating expertise in as many as 15 subject areas and programming languages.
There aren't nearly enough jobs in this country to employ everyone who wants and needs one.
The federal govt is legislating jobs and good paying jobs out of teh country. Just ask any black sheetrock worker in the south west why they cannot find a job.

Actually, it's great to live in a country where opportunity has been created for so many people with so few marketable skills to get started earning an honest living.

And the ignorant assume all these jobs are min wage counter/kitchen help. McDonald's also has staff that are store managers, administrative(finance, accounting, traffic, inventory, purchasing, IT, etc.).
My younger brother got his first job in the late 70s working for a Nathan's store working the counter. He was with them for nearly six years through college. At one point he was promoted to store manager, a move that groomed him for his current job in his career field. He manages about a dozen or so staffers in a govt agency.

Was just discussing this the other day with my buddy. He said he heard on one of the cable news channels, some energy analyst saying that every single oil well that is put up creates something like 1000 jobs, most if not all are high paying jobs.
