My baby brother (22) was expecting his son on May 24. Early Monday Morning his girlfriend went into labor and my nephew arrived into this world one month early!
They had nothing because they thought they had another month. So my parents / her parents had to scramble on Monday to make sure they bought a bassinet for the baby to sleep in for now, diapers, clothes, car seat, etc.
If it wasn't for their parents they would be screwed. My brother had to go to work Monday night because he could not afford to take a day off.
Anyway, I am happy that my nephew is here and we share the same birthday. To start spoiling him I sent some cash and the present we were saving for his baby shower.

Congrats on your healthy new nephew, but as far as spoiling your brother--I think you are too late and people have been there, done that already Oh, if you meant the baby--same thing! The baby is cute.

Congrats on the new nephew and glad he's healthy! We had "everything" but even we had to scramble a bit when DD came a week early. Everyone had bought us size 1 diapers saying that she'd be out of newborns by the third week, she was in them for 3 months! We had to do a midnight diaper run when we got home to get newborn diapers. If she had been born a month early we would have been so screwed because DH didn't even have the crib put together.

Congratulations on your nephew.
When my brother was expecting his first he did nothing to get ready. He had been in the Air Force 6 years and married 2 years but they didn't even start to get ready for a full term baby. Mom bought yards of fabric and sewed diapers for her and my parents bought them a crib. Yet while pregnant his wife was spending a fortune on huge houseplants. It was like they didn't even consider the baby would need anything.

Congrats on your nephew!
Yes, EF is definitely a big goal of mine to maintain. I still have 2 months to go before I'm comfortable with a EF that's got enough funding for a layoff. After that, I will spend the rest of the year adding to it for the home and car emergencies.

My own mother almost forgot it was my birthday, all eyes were on the newborn:P But now my own wife is talking about babies. Late Monday night when all the excitement of a new baby started dying down and they remembered it was my birthday they ran to Shop Rite and got me a slice of chocolate cake with a candle on it. After I blew the candle, she said what did you wish for, I said "more money" . She said :"what about a baby?" Anyway we taled about it again last nigth and decided if all goes according to plan (no credit card debt, nice EF), we would start trying for a baby at the end of next year.

To start spoiling him I sent some cash and the present we were saving for his baby shower. Congratulations on the nephew. And to give you a peek into their brains - they were probably waiting for the baby shower. If someone was gifting me a bassinet or crib and I knew or suspected that, I wouldn't have bought one either. My extended family has a tendency to go in on big/expensive presents so it wasn't not out of the realm of possibility for us. You know your family and I don't obviously though! With DD, we had a used crib. It met all safety standards 3 years ago so we used it. When DS came along 18 months later, I ended up buying a crib when he was about 3-4 weeks old. We had a family member's bassinet while we figured out if DD was going to be out of her crib in time for him. We finally got her out of the crib about a month ago and she'll be 3 next week...

Congrats, Uncle C! My son was born early-- very early. He was due December 12 and arrived October 9. My daughter was also born early-- Dec 1, due Dec 24 (needless to say that was pretty much term, and we're not unhappy about not having the Christmas Eve b-day).
It's going to be a challenge- there are issues they'll have to deal with, but this is pretty close to full term, so it should be minimal. Mostly, they just aren't going to get any sleep for the next three or four months...

To start spoiling him I sent some cash and the present we were saving for his baby shower. Congratulations on the nephew. Oh definitely! It would be the same case for my wife cousin that is due in July. All her baby furniture is on her list and she knows members of the family will buy it for her. So if she were to have a baby before her baby shower she would be witrhoi And to give you a peek into their brains - they were probably waiting for the baby shower. If someone was gifting me a bassinet or crib and I knew or suspected that, I wouldn't have bought one either. I understand and it would be the case, at least for my mom. That is her first grandbaby so you can bet she is going all out. Same would be the case for my wife cousin that is due in July, if her baby were to arrive before the baby shower she would be without any furniture or anything (the baby furniture is on her list and she knows members of the family can afford. It and will get it for her). We will probably do the same when we are expecting, wait till after the baby shower to decide what we are getting ourselves. But it my brother's case, they did not prepare for the possibility of the baby coming early: so had nothing for the baby and no money to get anything. They both don't carry credit cards so they could not even charge anything and pay it back later. If it wasn't for both set of grandparents they would have been screwed like I stated. So the grandparents got the essentials between monday and today (they are going home today) and I guess they are waiting till the baby shower on May 8th to decide what else they need to buy. So waiting for the baby shower is great, but I learned a lesson for when it's my turn: - have some cash put away in case the little sucker gets impatient and decide to come out early!

Congrats!
I would have planned the shower sooner than 2 weeks before the due date though! I would have done it 2 months before!

Congrats on the birth of your nephew.
A few things, though. 1. I don't know how one month would have made a difference. 2. Are you sure that your brother would be OK with you posting naked pics of his son on some message board.
May be I am too private or too prudish or too whatever, but I would be furious.

Does this at least get YOUR mother off your back about grandkids, or does it just encourage her since now your brother has a kid when will you? Congratulations Also, very good point. The baby comes when the baby comes, ready or not. Amazingly, that describes so many other things.

Congrats! Nephews are awesome, I have 4 of 'em and I love them to bits I know a couple who recently had their first baby... she was due around Feb 1st I think, and she was born early November she was in the hospital until around the due date, and is now home & doing great luckily! Her shower was after the baby already came too, but in their case since she was in the hospital for so long and not home, I'm not sure it mattered a lot. I was born a month early.. but my parents also didn't know what I was because they wanted to be surprised, so they had unisex clothes already.. I don't know if they were unprepared - probably not by much. My grandmother ran out shopping before coming to the hospital to meet me I guess, she showed up with bags full of frilly dresses lol

I told her this morning now I really have an excuse to look at baby clothes (nephew is expecting his first child (a girl) in July and we've bought a couple things to send him for her). BTW - congrats on the new nephew. He is a cutie.

Thinking this over, I really can't think of any bad reasons to have an EF, or bad things about an EF, period.

Congrats on the new nephew! I can completely relate as DS was 7 weeks preemie. We did have some stuff, but had to buy more because he was too little for regular baby stuff (like an insert for the carseat, a preemie outfit or two--fortunately a family friend loaned us a bunch of clothes she had for foster babies she would take care of). I had an EF though and it was a life saver.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate all the good wishes / thoughts. Baby and mommy are home and doing well
@ WWBG: Actually it intensified the tension/pressure on both side of the family. My mom wants me to have one even more now since I am the oldest. Same goes for my wife since her cousin (younger than her and only got married last year) is expecting a baby this july.
@wisconsin Beth: I thought it weird also but yes, neither of them have a credit card. I guess the plus side to it is they cannot go into debt but the downside no credit and like this monday... nothing to pay for an EF in case they don't have cash.
