I haven't seen a thread about it yet. Are others watching this? Those poor people!

I have a lot of family in Hawaii. Thankfully none on Maui. This is really going to take a long time for them to recover from as nearly all their income is from tourism and it's advised that there is no travel there for at least 3 months now.

The historical whaling town of Lahaina seems to be destroyed . Very sadly about36 people died. People in Lahaina were jumping into the water to get away from fires
We’ve visited Lahaina many times, it has/had many stores exhibiting local artists. Our kids have taken surfing lessons there Beautiful old buildings and cute new sort of Western style

There was a resident interviewed on the Today show this morning and he spoke of the destruction in heartbreaking detail. He said his house, his parents, his grandparents, all his neighbors, all his coworkers, are now gone. They have no shelter, no cars, no jobs. He spoke of the memories that were destroyed, like shared meals at his grandparents home. It evoked the same feeling I had when I first saw the story of Katrina's impact on New Orleans. Buildings are more than buildings sometimes.

There were quite a few people that had just rebuilt their homes from the 2019 fires. If I ever moved to one of the islands you can bet your ass I'll be on the leeward side.
eta: I meant windward not leeward. I know what side I want to be on though even if I forget the name. The WET side.

You can take the windward side and I'll take the leeward side. The leeward side has places to land, launch, and store boats. Being able to escape by sea is incredibly important when you live on an island, and if you don't have good places to land boats, there probably isn't much else on the windward side. Don't expect the roads to offer multiple escape routes. Don't expect anyone to show up to suppress the fire.
I'll take the leeward side almost any time that I have a choice. I know that the winds will drive the fire toward me, but my escape routes are better. Who the hell cares whether my home burns down or not when things come to that?

Watching it. Some friends are on vacation on the island of Kauai. Their two sons (37 and 40 years old?) today flew to Maui because they want to see a park there. Myself and others told my friends the boys should not fly to Maui because of the fires and the work of first responders.
Father said the park the boys want to visit is not near the fires. Father is clueless. So are the boys. I hope the boys are stuck on Maui for days and cannot get home due to very limited flights out of Maui. I find their travel to Maui right now disrespectful of the Hawaiian natives.
The boys were even told before they left Kauai the park they wanted to visit was closed due to the fires on the island. Idiots.

I went to Hawaii almost 20 years ago. The time I spent on Maui is in the top 3 of my most relaxing times on a vacation. I’ve only visited 2 of the islands, but I’m pretty sure all of them are as beautiful or more than the ones I visited. I feel for the people that live on the islands that are having the wildfires. Even if I had travel plans paid for, to visit right now, I wouldn’t go. They have enough to deal with right now, besides tourists still coming to visit, like the folks Tennesseer mentioned. Plus, I’m scary and wouldn’t want to be anywhere near wildfires in the first place, if I didn’t have to. It’s an island, there’s only so far you can run or drive, to get away from the danger. What soupandstew posted, really makes me sad for them.

I'm so sad for the people of Maui. This will be a difficult recovery.
We went to the Big Island in 1987. A wonderful vacation. I still have the dress I bought there that still fits. H. has his shirt.

It really looks awful. It will be a while before they really know how many we're killed by the fire 😞

The only people traveling there right now should be people that are going to help with the crisis. There are not a lot of residents on that island. Even if they weren't directly affected, it's likely they have family or friends that were. Unaffected areas are having to take in all the people that have been displaced, cell service is down, power is out in big areas. They don't need tourists visiting their parks for funsies right now.

Not sure why you don't think there are boat launches on the windward side? This is Kaneohe where my family lives on Oahu. Harbors in Hilo on the Big Island and Lihue on Kauai...

I so want to reply with 100% snark. Something like "Thank you for flying to Maui yesterday to help those Maui citizens who were burned out of their homes and businesses. It was selfless of you to volunteer your time and money to assist. "Huh...wait...what...you flew to Maui yesterday to only visit a waterfall and post pictures of it on Facebook but did nothing to help ease the suffering of the people on Maui? How selfish of you. "Marked safe indeed."

If for nothing else, the airlines are probably flying in folks assisting with the disaster and its effects on its people. Plus, the airlines might have been flying in empty jets only to fly out those folks wanting to get off the island for many reasons due to the fires.

Maybe they can swing over and help with the body search.

My badly worded post meant I was surprised they were flying in tourist and “they” were tourist.

My badly worded post meant I was surprised they were flying in tourist and “they” were tourist. Yup. Some sort of 'special people'. And right now I am not a big fan of their father's wife. His first wife was a co-worker/friend of mine and her husband, her sister and I took care of her during her last ten years of her life as she fought multiple rounds of cancer. So the husband's new wife (married 12 months ago) is posting real time pictures of her and hubby enjoying/bragging about the booze and scenery on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. I am okay posting pictures of vacations AFTER one returns home. Telling everyone 'you' are away from home might tempt someone to break into 'your' home. Plus, I am going to their home right now every other day while they are away to feed their pets (cats). I would hate to enter their home and be confronted by someone burglurizing their home. Not fair to me. I think this will be the last vacation I cover for them due to the live reporting on Facebook by them that they are away from home. I think I have covered for them about eight vacations now.

Found out tonight that my cousin's wife's family lost everything in Lahaina including their dogs and spent 10 hours in the ocean overnight waiting for the coast guard to rescue them. There is a wall by front street that they had to crawl over, and if some younger guy didn't show up to give them a boost they wouldn't have made it. There were others that were unconscious at the wall from smoke inhalation and it's assumed they didn't make it.

It wasn't until they regrouped on top of a parking garage structure that they realized they had left 2 turtles and 7 birds behind. Horrible situation and the known death toll is up to 80. I expect it will be in the hundreds for the final tally.

Report last night said there were over 1000 missing. So the death toll will continue to rise. A friends niece was working there for the summer. Someone gave them keys to a truck so they could escape, because they weren't old enough to have a rental car. The first hand reports sound horrifying.

While the song is from the musical Les Misérables, it is also applicable for the people of Maui whose family members died or still missing and their lives overturned due to the fires. Remember them.

Someone gave them keys to a truck so they could escape, because they weren't old enough to have a rental car. The first hand reports sound horrifying. I saw that, too. The town that was wiped out had no warning about the wild fire - cellphones were down, power was out, no TV, maybe radio if you had a battery operated one. Residents are primarily attuned to listen for tsunami warnings, which would have made them go inland, toward the fire. And they showed a long line of twisted, burnt cars where people had been stuck in a traffic jam trying to head out of town when the wildfires caught them. Hopefully most made it down to the ocean - but imagine if you had small kids or elderly people with you. What a nightmare. They’ve opened an investigation into why there weren’t warnings. They said a drought made it burn quickly but has anyone heard what actually started the fire?

Remember there were 80mph winds happening at this time too, so it wouldn't have taken much with the drought they've been having. One thought is that a power line blew over in the wind and the sparking fanned by the wind caused it.

Yeah I saw on the news tonight that the electric company has high wind regulations (where they power down some of their high risk lines ) and they claim they were fully compliant. With high winds and dry vegetation there are multiple possible ways it started, though. FBI is there investigating so we’ll have to see.

The current conspiracy theory is that Directed Energy Weapons were used to start the fires. The far-right-wing conspiracy theorists think it HIGHLY suspicious that NOT A SINGLE blade of grass on Barack Obama's property was burned in the fires.
More rational people understand that there is more than 100 miles of Pacific Ocean water between the Maui fires and Obama's property on Oahu, and that wildfire embers are unlikely to traverse the distance.... But hey, why waste a conspiracy theory when it presents itself to you, right?
