Do you have the same concerns about Trump ignoring court orders. Or is it only when a democrat does it? Arrest Biden? I thought presidents had immunity. Or did you change your opinion on all of Trump’s legal problems are legitimate? You're right. I should have said fined. Contempt of court fine? A cease and desist order? Trump is ignoring the gag order because it violates his 1st amendment rights. criminal defendants don't have the same 1st amendment rights as normal citizens. let's make this personal, to illustrate the point. let's say that i was on trial for burning down your house. during the runup to the trial, i suggested that this was an arson case, and that anyone that thinks i did it should be harassed and persecuted, and that i would pay for the defense of anyone that rose to that challenge. do you think that is protected by the 1st amendment?

You're right. I should have said fined. Contempt of court fine? A cease and desist order? Trump is ignoring the gag order because it violates his 1st amendment rights. Still wrong. What Biden is doing is an official presidential act. You just don’t like it. He is immune from prosecution, fines, etc as a result. The proper response, SS Trumps lawyers have tried to argue repeatedly, is impeachment. So, do you believe this is worth impeaching him for. Try reading the constitution Trump is in court because what he did were not official acts. The most current case in NY occurred BEFORE the election. The NY tax case was related to his PRIVATE business. No private citizen is allowed to keep confidential records in his private home, despite Trump’s claim to the contrary. And you are not allowed to incite an insurrection, despite Trump’s claim to the contrary the PRA is even more restrictive than that. he is not allowed to keep ANY official records in his home, including the "love letters" that KJ wrote him (i seriously doubt that those letters EXIST, for the record. lying is not against the law, in this case). he can only keep PRIVATE records. everything else belongs to the National Archives.

Rip - I had the same question because I have not gotten into the details of this one. Here is the most concise explanation: Short excerpt from www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/student-loan-forgiveness-new-biden-plan-30-million-who-qualifies-cbs-news-explains/The previous plan relied on the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act, or HEROES Act, a pandemic-era stimulus package. The Supreme Court ruled that law didn't provide the Biden administration with the authority to forgive student debt. The new plan turns to an older law, the Higher Education Act, which allows the Secretary of Education to "compromise, waive or release" federal student loans. It's through this mechanism that the Biden administration is tackling its new debt relief program. That's a good article and explains it well. But I still think the American taxpayer should not have to pay for someone's college degree. Especially if they picked a degree in a field that did not pay enough to pay off their useless degrees like left handed underwater Basket weaving, Theater arts, Fine Arts, Psychology, Music etc. When I was younger I had a few friends that got degrees and never put them to use. One friend was a professional student for about 20yrs. Always getting student loans. Got his Masters degree in something, worked for a few yrs in his field and then just became a logger. Said he didn't like the office work. He liked the outdoors. These are the types of people who got loans who Biden wants to pay off with my tax dollars. I don't know the figures but if 75% of the population did not go to college why should they pay for someone's else's loan? What's next? Biden paying off home loans?
a case could be made for that. i won't make it, though.

What really needs to be addressed is the cost of college and how the financial aid system is set up. It's nice to see that some states are doing something about it, but there is still so much more we could do. My son is graduating next month and will have no loans, but only because he got a ton of federal and state grants (a lot more than a 10K student loan forgiveness). Meanwhile his room mates whose parents made more money are having to take out loans. How is that fair? We would think it was nuts if we went to a car dealership and they wanted our family income before deciding how much to charge us. Lots of parents regardless of income aren't helping their kids with college, and certainly not to the extent the calculators say they should.
the cost of education is related DIRECTLY to the amount of public funding that (public) colleges get. i think that we are falling for a straw man argument on this one. first the GOP strips funding from colleges, THEN it pumps up the volume on the fact that the stripped funding has CAUSED out of control cost increases for students. it is the mock ourage machine in action. the PROBLEM is that we don't fund education in this country, not that education costs are spiraling out of control. note: both my parents graduate college without a dollar in debt. why? because college was FREE for them. we have lost track of the argument, people. we are debating Republican talking points. we need to change that.

why not? seriously. the discussion often focuses on the "unfairness" of paying for student DEBT, but why should we NOT pay for a college education for EVERY American? lots of countries do it, and they seem perfectly fine with it. after all, an educated workforce is in the public interest. why should we NOT pay for college degrees for every citizen? An educated workforce is a positive for those who think that knowledge will lead to progress, facts are not debatable. Are willing to change their mind when presented with evidence, and willing to think for themselves. Since the Republican Party does not want any of those things. They are anti-intellectual and anti-education. It is no surprise that they want to defund public education at all levels

Dubette #2 acquired a psychology degree then went to work at a facility that took in damaged children aged 7-17. Not pretty. Then she continued working while getting her MSW. Took a position at a sort of halfway house for post incarcerated teenage boy sex offenders. Was her psychology degree just a waste? Please explain why you might think that. TYIA

I repeat: tax the billionaires. But they've bought Ahem, invested in their very own politicians to prevent this! (see the satire piece about pre-owned politicians posted by Tenn) We'd need to invest in even more politicians to overcome theirs.

I hate to tell you this, but the American taxpayer has ALWAYS supplemented college education to the tune of about 80%. In the last 30 years, what states have paid out to colleges has dropped so now that the student is on the hook for the much larger chunk. So your friends, assuming you are around 60 years old or older got their education at the expense of the American tax payer. Their student loans were their portion of college. If that was in the late 1970s, early 80s you are talking about $400/semester or so. Considering this was 40 years ago, chances are they’ve paid off their $4000 in student loans.

Median income was $46k and minimum wage was $3.80. My daughter now goes to the same school. Funding has been cut dramatically. Tuition is $14k per year. Her additional fees were almost $2k last semester alone. The state has cut most of its funding to Universities. Median income $86k. Minimum wage is $13.85. Min wage has gone up3.5x Median income has doubled Tuition has gone up 14x plus I haven’t even talked about housing.

they just had a long (for AM radio) expose on KCBS about the cost of housing for students. it appears that they are going to work on it here in CA. kids are living in cars. room and board have always been more expensive than tuition, but now BOTH are ridiculous.

I started at a private university on the east coast in 1978. Tuition was $4200/year plus room and board. Looked up costs for this year
Tuition $65000 Housing $13000 and up depending on building Food at least $7000
And this is at a school ranked in the top 25 by US News, and is usually included in schools with the best ROI.
