I ordered a new vehicle a few weeks ago. It’s a 2023 Honda Pilot and the total cost is about $50,000. I can afford it. It’s here. I’m putting half down and financing the rest at 2.9% for 5 years.
I need a car, my van has 170,000 miles on it p, it’s 8 years old, has dents in it, and DS will have his license soon.
i was supposed to pick it up,today, but because if the holiday weekend, my insurance agent was closed so now I get it on Thursday.
I had had a full on melt down today about buying it.
Before i found YM, I used to buy a car every few years as soon as I paid it off, and I didn’t think anything about it. Now, I freak out about purchases like this.

I was shocked and appalled and thought you all were crazy when I started lurking and learned that according to you all, I couldn’t afford my car. By then, it was almost paid off though and it didn’t make sense to get rid of it at that point. And I eventually realized you all weren’t so crazy after all, which is why I still have that same car, a 2003 Honda coupe that I bought new. I like cars, and this was the first car I EVER kept long enough to pay off. But with what I’ve learned from y’all “crazy folks”, I am more than content to keep it until it doesn’t make sense anymore. I do have to fight “new car fever” a lot, but it has gotten easier because I haven’t had a car payment since 2008, when I paid my car off, and I like it. I dare not try to pay cash for a car….. my heart wants to jump out my chest if I spend more than $1k in a single transaction, so they might have to call an ambulance if i try to pay cash for a whole car. And I am serious about avoiding a car note for as long as I can. Fortunately for me, even though my girl has over 200k miles on her now, she’s a soldier and still going strong. I probably would’ve been through at least 3 more cars by now if not for you all. You guys ARE jerks, like the OP said, but in a good way.

I've always had used cars. Before YM it was because it was all I could afford. Now it's because I'm a financial genius 😉

I’d be ok with a used car.
There are no gently used pilots to be found.

I saw the Top of the line 2023 CRV described as a mini Pilot. If I give up my Rav4 Prime it is on my list of Potential cars.
I get what you are saying. I have sacrificed and saved and denied myself lots of things. I am buying the car I want. Especially since we hold onto our cars forever anyways.
Enjoy your car. It seems like just a few years ago you bought the Van.

My next car will probably be my first new one. For similar reasons why swamp got a new one.
But I'm hoping to hold off for a while. In a big part thanks to work from home. I'll pretend it's fancy with the plug in Bluetooth I bought a few years ago.

You know you were supposed to track down and buy a $5,000 beater car, right? Maybe next time. I hadn't bought a new car since 1991. DH and I bought a couple after that off rental and they worked out well, till the second Nissan (a 2012, only 134,000 miles) developed transmission problems in July, 2020. The transmission would have cost more to replace (even rebuilt) than the car was worth. I was visiting DS and DDIL at the time and didn't want to mess around looking for a good used car so I bought a new Civic for $20,000 and paid cash. I'm OK with having bought new but I hope this one last longer than the Nissan did.

I can’t even find that elusive $5000 beater for my 16 year old.
So he gets moms beater. Nothing says baller like an 8 year old powder blue mommy van. He doesn’t t believe when I tell him it will be a chick magnet.

I paid it off with some proceeds from my house sale in 2020, and I've gotten used to not having a car payment. IF I can find a manual transmission car I like next time, I'll buy new. I'm not buying someone else's worn out clutch. the list of options is dwindling, though. I do plan to keep the Mazda til it refuses to move. the pups have pretty well trashed it, I wouldn't get much for a trade-in with that mileage anyway. enjoy the Pilot, swamp!

Getting harder and harder to find but I'm sure you know that already. I would buy one new too but I accept the fact that my reflexes are not as good in my old age as in the misspent 40's and 50's. I still miss shifting gears

My friend similarly wanted a manual and had a hard time finding one. He pretty much had to get the first one he found. I do love the less miles. Mine is 2008 but only around 130k miles. If I hadn't been wfh it would be more like 150k or more.

$5000? The last beater I bought was $500. Ah, this brought back a fond memory. We had an old Plymouth Valiant in 1970. Dad wanted to replace it and Mom made the observation that she thought Dad just wished it would disappear form the driveway. I was dating a guy who'd been borrowing his parents' van since he couldn't afford a car and he said jokingly, "I'll give you $15 for it". Dad told him he had a deal. They signed the proper papers a few days later and BF drove off in it. They were both happy. BF drove it for a long time and later said he regretted replacing it because the replacement was less reliable; interestingly, Dad said the same thing about the replacement car he'd bought. Those were tough little cars.

Enjoy your Pilot!
We are looking to replace DH's vehicle. We plan to trade it in. He'll move into my current vehicle which has less miles than his. The only time we previously bought new was in 2003. We sold it for cash about 7 years after it was paid off, and replaced it with a used vehicle.
We are looking at the new Kia Telluride. We were just visiting my uncle in Vancouver, WA and he just got his 2022. We were so impressed with it that we want one as well. My current vehicle is paid off in Feb. Whatever vehicle we decide on should be the only other vehicle we ever buy new.

There was a gently used one on the lot with 6000 miles on it for $48,000. The new ones were $42.000. You paid a premium for a used car to drive it off the lot and not wait for your order.

That is crazy to pay more for slightly used than new!
ETA: my uncle got a good deal on his. He purchased a new 2022 that someone had preordered and then changed their mind. I do not recall what he said the total was but it was low 40k. He didn't have to wait long for his, only a few weeks if I recall.

He doesn't take it with him and I use it quite a bit when he's gone because it gets good gas mileage. 97 Camry.

We bought used most of our lives, then used trucks got so high and were so worn out we started buying new. We have had several new, but I found rental returns and started buying those for excellent prices. The one I have now is a program car. Had 15000 miles and all the new car warranties on it. It's a 2018 with 47000 miles on it, has a tire sensor replacement I'm waiting on and the backup camera goes off and on. It was replaced once already under warranty. Never had any other issues with it.
And yet I'm looking at cars, I don't keep mine all that long, I do like a pretty car. And the Prius sure is not a pretty one. But in reading those things will run up to 300,000 thousand miles. I stopped at a dealership today and they had a 2010 with 250k on it and it looked really good. I didn't see a new one on the lot, there were just a few new ones there.

Swamp - you enjoy your new Pilot and I'll enjoy the spring break trip I just booked to Punta Cana that the YM voices in my head won't stop yelling about. Deal? I don't care about the cars I drive. I do like to travel

H. likes to keep cars under warranty for our main driver. His Nissan is a 2015. Mine is 2011 Honda CRZ. Just $25,000 miles on it.
We don't drive a lot because we are retired. We go most places together.

I didn’t have good luck with used cars. The last one I had, a Honda Civic, something was randomly draining the battery and the lights would go dim and it would lose power until it cut off while I was driving and even the dealer couldn’t tell me why. It was a stick shift, so I knew how to start it again if I could get it rolling, but I couldn’t always get it rolling and was often stuck until somebody could come get me or it decided to start again. That was pretty scary.
The car I had in high school was a stick, and my godfather showed me how I could start my car if I could get it rolling and popped the clutch, even if it didn’t have a battery in it at all. That knowledge came in handy with the car I’m talking about now.
I was working 7pm-3:30am for a bank at the time I was having those problems with the Civic, and the last time it stopped on me after I got off work was when I took it to the dealer. Nobody else had been able to figure out the issue and I’d already replaced the alternator twice, so I thought surely the dealer could figure it out, but nope.
I lived in the hood, and when I got off work, sometimes I had to drive across town on the expressway to pick my babies up from my Mom’s house and then drive home. The last time it stopped on me was on the expressway, going to get my babies after I’d got off work.
I took it to the dealer the next day. When they said they didn’t know what was wrong with it, I went to another dealer the next day and bought my first brand new car. I needed some peace of mind that me and my babies would be able to get home safely after I got off work at 3:30am. I haven’t bought a used car since.

Not a financial genius, but I've only had three cars in my lifetime solely owned by myself. My first car was bought used, a Toyota Corolla when I was in grad school. My next two cars were bought new, but held onto longer than I'd like. My 1989 Honda Accord LXI was taken out by a deer one night coming home, forget how long I had it and my current vehicle, the 3 series, which was delivered the very end of 2001 to me. I still have it because I cannot afford at this time to turn it into another vehicle used or new.

Around 2006 or so, people in that job thought I should turn my 3 series into a Prius perhaps because of what some think are my crunchy beliefs or taste in food. One was my boss at the time, and I said I'm a car enthusiast. I would never buy a Prius. Its ugly and probably has the handling characteristics of its big battery. No TY. Now a Nissan Leaf, maybe ... that thing does well on the tilt table and one of the car mags put all kinds of tires on it and tested it. I think one set was what I was using at the time.
