I didn’t have good luck with used cars. The last one I had, a Honda Civic, something was randomly draining the battery and the lights would go dim and it would lose power until it cut off while I was driving and even the dealer couldn’t tell me why. It was a stick shift, so I knew how to start it again if I could get it rolling, but I couldn’t always get it rolling and was often stuck until somebody could come get me or it decided to start again. That was pretty scary. The car I had in high school was a stick, and my godfather showed me how I could start my car if I could get it rolling and popped the clutch, even if it didn’t have a battery in it at all. That knowledge came in handy with the car I’m talking about now. I was working 7pm-3:30am for a bank at the time I was having those problems with the Civic, and the last time it stopped on me after I got off work was when I took it to the dealer. Nobody else had been able to figure out the issue and I’d already replaced the alternator twice, so I thought surely the dealer could figure it out, but nope. I lived in the hood, and when I got off work, sometimes I had to drive across town on the expressway to pick my babies up from my Mom’s house and then drive home. The last time it stopped on me was on the expressway, going to get my babies after I’d got off work. I took it to the dealer the next day. When they said they didn’t know what was wrong with it, I went to another dealer the next day and bought my first brand new car. I needed some peace of mind that me and my babies would be able to get home safely after I got off work at 3:30am. I haven’t bought a used car since. I don't really trust my ability to choose used cars over being a great shopper for new ones that will last. Besides my used vehicle I did help fund most of a used Honda for my BF at the time. Do not remember much except it did need some money tossed at it for repairs. I think because of it I decided used cars were generally what it cost plus $1K to $2K in repairs in the near future because the current owner didn't want to spend the money. Plus, if I buy new, I know the car's history and can adjust my driving habits to make it last longer. A used car you never truly know how its been treated, stored etc. even if someone gave you all their maintenance records. Peace of mind is a good thing and the new vehicle I bought with my Xh that was "his" car, had all sorts of hard to diagnose issues. I don't always count it because I was generally driving my used Corolla or "my" Honda at that time.

I have too many cars, they are just fun to own. I buy used then drive them forever. My wife's car needs to die, and she wants my BMW, that things a tank, but ever approaching 200K miles it still runs strong and get's 38mpg.
She wants it for the heated steering wheel 😊. Anyway, against all common sense, I want a Jaguar F-Type, and after a considerable search, found one I want in Texas, so I'm going to fly down, buy it, then drive it the 19 hours home...YM be damned. 😅

You know you were supposed to track down and buy a $5,000 beater car, right? Maybe next time. I hadn't bought a new car since 1991. DH and I bought a couple after that off rental and they worked out well, till the second Nissan (a 2012, only 134,000 miles) developed transmission problems in July, 2020. The transmission would have cost more to replace (even rebuilt) than the car was worth. I was visiting DS and DDIL at the time and didn't want to mess around looking for a good used car so I bought a new Civic for $20,000 and paid cash. I'm OK with having bought new but I hope this one last longer than the Nissan did. $5000? The last beater I bought was $500. The last beater I SOLD was $1,000. It was great car...no issues. Great condition.

When we were buying my husband’s new car there was a couple trying to jerry rig the financing so they could trade in their nice looking car and drive a new one. They looked like they were the kind to keep up with the Jonses and I wanted to go over and impart my YM wisdom on them. But alas - not my circus.
Then my daughter totaled our old Pilot. Now I have to find a used car for one of the kids to own. 🥴

Ok, after talking it over with my wife..we are flying down to Dallas next Friday to buy and drive the 19 hours home my new Jaguar F-Type.
When I asked her about it, she said "we need a good adventure to break things us, fuck it, let's go!" What could go wrong?
I'm nervous and excited all at the same time, it should be a wild ride.

Is it a convertible? New? Have fun! I saw a gorgeous green 1960 Xk when I was in Malibu for an event. Walked past the store twice a day and finally went in. I really loooved it and was talking about how to ship to NJ. THEN I saw the fire extinguisher and remembered friends many problems with his - Lucas Prince of Darkness stories Oh well, still remember it fondly but I’m enjoying my Tesla no problems S

I would LOVE to see Phil find a $5k unicorn in this market. I couldn't find anything worth driving for under $10k and that was in 2019. $12k for my Impala was pushing it I just happened to be on the lot at the right place and time otherwise I was looking closer to $15k. DH's Nissan was $14k. Both under 100k miles but they were not under 50k. Unless there are a lot of old ladies hiding cars they only drive to church in the garages before they die Phil's advice is seriously outdated.

I've been listing over this coupe for some time, it's AWD, and has the climate package on it, it belongs in the north...

Sure, everybody has $100,000 in their couch cushions. If everyone should own one, how about you give me your's? You can get another one.

Not my priority at all but plenty of people would gasp at my travel budget. I don't really care about a car other than it being comfortable, reliable and high mpg. Aren't Jaguars finicky, though? DH had a friend who owned one years ago and the guy said that his mechanic occasionally released the car to him so he could drive it.

My Jeep Wrangler had around 63k miles on it when we bought it in 2020 for $14k, and that was pretty much a deal. It’s a 2010. Today, it still has less than 80k miles on it. Wranglers are really weird with pricing, in that used ones cost more than I would’ve thought they would, and that was true even before the car market got weird. If we sold it today, we could get more than we paid for it.
The Tahoe we bought this spring, we paid $10k for it. It’s a 2010 also. And when we searched online for similar vehicles for sale, we would’ve had to pay around $17k to buy a comparable one elsewhere.
Then we have my ‘03 Honda Accord that I bought new and is still in great condition. I haven’t priced how much I could get for it, but a couple of my coworkers keep telling me to let them know if I ever want to sell it. They like the fact that except for a 2 year period, I’ve always taken it to the dealer for service and repairs. I think I could get at least $2k for it these days.
Mister has a 2016 Honda Accord sedan. I don’t know what it’s worth if we sold it either.
Then there’s Mister’s old Lincoln that he keeps for sentimental reasons. I think it’s maybe a ‘98, I’m not sure. But she still runs like a champ and rides like a dream.
We basically have a small car lot lol.
I LOVE cars, but as I’ve gotten a little wiser, I got to the point that I don’t really like paying a lot of money for cars lol. When Mister bought his Accord a few years ago, my nerves were kind of wrecked for a while with new car fever, wanting to buy a newer car myself. But I got over it, and did not give in to temptation. I know I’ll have to buy another car eventually because my little Honda won’t last forever, but I’m not looking forward to that because I know how I am about cars.
This time, when I buy a car, I want it to be something I really want, within reason. Every car I’ve ever bought, I settled in some way, even with my ‘03 Honda. And since I really like cars, and feel like driving one can be an experience, more than just a way to get from point A to point B….. I don’t see that purchase being inexpensive.

The new ones are much better than the ones that created the bad reputation. Tata motors owns them now, along with Range Rover and a bunch of other manufactures (Volvo, etc). The quality has really improved. And for the YM record, yes it was $99K new, but I bought a gently used one for less than half that. Less than a new SUV...

I bought a 2020 Honda HRV in 2020 because my car was totaled by a texting young driver. I have 11k miles on it. I’m in a walkable city where it takes longer to drive somewhere than to walk it. I’m hoping if my daughter in law actually has the baby she wants, I can give it to her because right now they share my son’s car which is 5 years old with 40k miles on it. They both work remotely and walk pretty much everywhere as well. But I think if they have a baby they should have a bigger car than his plus that gives me an excuse to get a new one. I’ve turned into my late husband who leased because he got bored. But I’m hanging in there with it. It’s a great car and I love filling it with all my stuff. My next one might be a Hyundai. They look pretty cool. Both my kids wanted new tires for Christmas. Sigh. They’ve become responsible adults. My job is done.

Here is my thinking. If you can afford it, do it! Congrats! Enjoy that new car smell. Sometimes, the experience is worth the price. You work hard for it, besides, if you commute and drive a lot, you spend considerable amount of time in your vehicle. In that case, I rather be sitting in something comfy and nice instead of a crap box. Me personally, I will never be the "car gets me from point A to point B" type of a person. I know it does, but I want to get there in style damnit!

I am happy to report the Honda Pilot is fabulous in snow. Great! Your situation reminds me of the Irish sporting goods shop owner who described their snowfall a few years back as being cheek deep. I don’t think he was talking about his face. But it sounds like you could be.
