Join the club - DH and I both did 17 years Catholic education, single sex HS (Jesuit for DH), and Jesuit college (where we met). Actually, DH did another few years for his masters, too. I know one other person who beat me. Went to law school at a catholic institution too Catholic school only got me for the last 2 years of HS. By then, I had already formed a lot of my own opinions. I did get an excellent education from them though, so there’s that.

Now I can't be certain but I believe that my science/math education was excellent at least in part due to the fact that there was no chance of unconscious bias in education. So while an all girls school was not all that popular with me at the time, it sure has not hurt me in the long run.

I know the quality of my high school education was better than it would have been in the public high school, and my guidance counselor definitely helped me get to where I am today. I was a middle class kid, no physicians in the family before me. You could say I am an American success story

It was called House of Good Shephard; a school for wayward teenage girls.

To this day, I remember having a meeting with the guidance counselor. He asked me what my interests were, and what I wanted to do. I told him I didn’t know, but I liked science. So he started steering me towards teaching. When my mom heard this, her response was ‘oh, hell NO!’. That is not the only profession for those with an inclination to science. She went down to the counselor and ripped him a new one. I had another meeting with him, and he had a whole new list of possible choices. However, my final choice was not on his list. I stumbled onto what I wanted to do my senior year of college.

We may have led somewhat parrallel lives, though in my case it was my dad who went oh hell, NO and it wasn't a counselor who was sfteering me in the direction of teaching. I just really, really wanted to study history and that seemed to lead to teaching. Dad put the kibosh on that because he knew that was not right for me (a true case of Father knows best, lol). So I went with my second choice, got a degree in chemistry and never regretted it.
