FWIW - I'm right there with you in being disappointed with humanity but it particulars hurts when it's a friend or relative that I thought had basic common sense and decency.

Conspiracy theories prey on our own nature and how our brains are hardwired that's why they are so appealing If you're already thinking X and then a bunch of articles pop up supporting X you end up down the rabbit hole. Now confirmation bias kicks in all around you and now your friends agree with you, you find a coworker that comments about the blog you just read.
On and on and on. Just like when you drive a silver Chevy suddenly you see more silver Chevys on the road. Doesn't mean there are more on the streets, it's just now you notice them better because you drive the same car.
Even the smartest among us fall for bad sources and have our own confirmed biases. I remember my boss talking about how there is a medical librarian out in Wyoming who is single handed trying to create a database for all the fake journals on the web. He's seen some of them quoted and has even almost fallen for them himself. They are very good at masking themselves.
The really sinister thing about conspiracy theories is there is no way to poke holes in them, they just expand to consume your argument. I watch shows involving them every once and awhile and they make scary sense. If you're already leaning that way it wouldn't take much to push you over.
As the X Files say "Question everything" that is where a lot of us fall short. It's not a lack of intelligence exactly it's a lack of awareness and willingness to step out of your comfort zone.

The Jews rounded up and sent to the Warsaw ghetto by the Nazis didn't have the luxury of being able to sit outdoors enjoying the fresh air while having a cookout with their families.
Nor have any American families been sent to the gas chambers for going food shopping.

What kills me is NOBODY is saying you can't practice your religion! You just can't be in the dang building. If God is everywhere then why the heck does it matter if you are in the actual building or not?
I truly do not understand this. With the every evolving technology there is absolutely no reason you can't reach your congregation. And even if you cannot there is no reason why they should not be able to pray/worship in their own homes without you. Connection to God should not have to rely on being in a physical building in large groups.
I think DH hit on the head that it's really about money. They aren't getting as much in tithes as they would usually so they need people back in the building so they can collect.

Lots of people have bastardized science for their purposes, but what's happening now with the pandemic is not the case. My sister thinks it is.

Why is it so important to be surrounded with possible vectors in order to worship? Undoubtedly, it IS all about the money.

I get for some people like my great uncle who is 85 and does not have a computer that the church is his community. How about these people who think their religious rights are being trampled on because they can't be in church do something for people like my great uncle so they can connect to their community without being exposed?
I know there are a lot who are but aren't getting the same attention. I was reading about a priest that is doing drive by confession for congregation. He sits in a chair six feet away from the parking spot with a blindfold on. If you are truly invested in spreading the word and protecting your flock you'd figure out how to make it work without the building.

I try to avoid those channels, but I can still remember Sunday morning services on TV.

I found out the local TV station still does Sunday school with the dog and frog hand puppets recently.

Back in the '50s and '60s there were church services on TV, usually aimed at the elderly and the sick who could not make it to their local church.

Our church has moved to online services. We've heard that donations are down enough that the Pastors took a paycut (and weren't paid much already). This is particularly difficult for our young pastor who likely still has student loan debt and 3 children under 5 to provide for. We also know that our church food bank is very low since people aren't donating or dropping off food and it's being used more with all of the layoffs. Our church also partially supports our school and teachers.
Our pastor is working his way through the list calling each member. He started with the oldest so he could help set up ministry partners if they needed help shopping or wanted someone assigned to check in on them regularly.

My personal confirmation bias at the moment is telling me that the world some 5 years from now might be similar to what the Jews experienced as the new generation of kids were being born after the WWII and whoever had any live grandparents was the envy of the rest of them. I fear our children might find themselves in that situation the way things are going. Our state has several hundred outbreaks and most of them appear to be in nursing home type facilities and we are only few months into this nightmare, with some shelter-in-place measures that are being lifted all over the place. This is my personal fear, sadness and bias showing.

fucking drama queens.
half of me wants to release them in the wild and let them get Covid.
the other half recognizes that the boundary between me and them is thin.

Well he can't retain his popularity with the religious right if he doesn't continue to pretend he gives a crap.

Hopefully the religious will do what's best for their congregation in the long run, not comply with tRump. What's sad is that those who are most likely to be affected by covid are probably the ones who are chomping at the bit to go back to church.

If it'll help them persecute the gays, women and anyone else who they think they are superior to they will continue to worship the false idol that is Trump. I swear I read something about what happens when you do that but they must have skipped that part.

I'd be all for natural selection here, except for the collateral damage.

TD and I were discussing this the other night. The only reason why so many people are relatively untouched by this disease is because all of the restrictions that they put upon us early (but not early enough) are working. In other words, our success has become a failure. OTOH, had we done nothing and had hundreds of thousands die, they'd be railing 'why didn't anyone do anything?'
It really is a no win situation.
