Even if he does not earn a profit on the G-7 Meeting itself, he will profit longterm from it being held at his property.

And I call BS....I'm betting someone told him that using taxpayer $$$ to refurbish Doral would NOT go over especially in an election year. And Camp David may have been the choice all along. Who wants to sleep where there were bed bugs & eat at a place that has roaches crawling up the kitchen walls. Not to mention that it needed 7 Presidential suites, it only has 1. 2 helipads would have had to be built on the greens & then removed after it was over. then the greens would have to be redone. Add that to the fact that in June, there's barely 30% occupancy, so he could cash in during the slow months.
He was trying to get a remodel on tax payers backs & up his intake $$'s for the slow months.
It has 30% occupancy partly because it's June in Florida, which means sweltering hot, and this site is so 'convenient' to Miami international the planes land and take off right over the resort. I guess you could play golf without risking sunstroke if you did so in the middle of the night. And June is the start of hurricane season in that area of the world.
Sure, Trump claimed he would only recoop his costs, but he is also refusing to show the financials, which means he would have probably done that for the room rental, but cranked up costs for things like golf cart rental, meeting room rentals, food service, etc. And as you point out, he'd get to charge the taxpayer for upgrading his rooms and helipads, IT network, security systems, etc. And exterminating all those bedbugs.
Trump bought a failing resort and it continues to fail - this looked like a great way to make it turn a profit, which is the only thing Trump ever thinks about, ever.

Trump is blaming Democrats and the media for his canceling Doral. Since when has Trump ever made a decision based on what Democrats or the media had to say? I'm positive that it was Republican push back which led to this decision. Democrats and the media just make convenient scapegoats. Mulvaney had gone to Camp David for the weekend with a group of moderate Republican congresspeople. Trump phoned into the meeting and talked to them - apparently they told him it was becoming very hard to continue to support him when lately, Trump has been creating one controversial shit storm after another.
So Trump, who brags that he never backs down on anything, backed down on this issue. Must have rattled him to have GOP people daring to speak out against him in public.

If there were federal term limits, I have no doubt more would speak out. Interestingly, many of the GOPers who are speaking out against Trump are retiring.
Faced with being a good Trump toadie or giving up politics, they're giving up politics.

As much as I believe in term limits, I view retiring instead of standing up for what is right makes them cowards.

He bought that place when it went into bankruptcy, that should have told him something. Guess he just wanted more write offs, LOL. How has he made it this long? Well we know, loans from Russian mafioso, but the payback is hell. Bring down America, doesn't seem to be bothering him a bit. But I bet when he goes for his big putin payback later, he gets told to blow off. Why would they want him? After he is out, noone will. I'm hoping he will become a sad footnote in history. If he had not been president we would not have known how corrupt and what a poor businessman he actually is. I doubt very seriously if he is a billionaire, would not surprise me by now that without our government propping him up if he might be in poor financial condition. That is in trying to maintain the standard of living his family has. Getting our government to pay for all of them has been a big bonus for him. From manipulating his taxes and books to stiffing people who work for him, sure would help a lot of us to have money with business practices like his.
And this goes to show you if the repub leadership had said no you can't do this long ago he would have had to stop. They let him do these excesses, could have done something before now. As hubs said if they had, he might even have been a decent president, but he is like a kid no one ever said no to and I'm sure that's how he grew up. Only he never did.

The conspiracy theorist in me is starting to think he WANTS to be impeached. Then he can ride out in a fiery blaze with book (and maybe a movie!) deals gallore. It's hard to compute that someone could have their head that far up their ass.

I just watched him whining that Obama making money off a book of his memoirs and Netflix. These things happened after Obama left office. Seems like Trump doesn't know the difference between a sitting president and a private citizen. Dumbass.

Trump dismisses 'phony Emoluments Clause' after Doral criticismPresident Trump on Monday dismissed criticism that his since-reversed plan to host the Group of Seven (G-7) summit at his Doral property would have led to an ethics violation. "I don't think you people, with this phony Emoluments Clause -- and by the way, I would say that it's cost anywhere from $2 billion to $5 billion to be president," Trump said during a Cabinet meeting at the White House. The Emoluments Clause prohibits elected federal officials from receiving gifts or contributions from foreign governments. Trump has repeatedly claimed the presidency has cost him billions of dollars. Trump offered a lengthy defense of using his Doral resort near Miami to host next year's G-7 summit, and lashed out amid questions about the backlash to his earlier decision. Complete article here: Trump dismisses 'phony Emoluments Clause' after Doral criticismWhat's striking is trump using the term "you people" instead of simply people. I bet that is not the first time trump has used that expression.

To be minimally fair it's not exactly like the Republicans have given a shit about the Constitution either. If your party doesn't why should you?

He could prove how much it's cost him if he released his taxes. It would be a simple comparison of before and after the presidency, pretty sure most of us can understand that math.

Tax returns show income, not net worth, so it would not be a direct comparison. Still, using his accounting, it probably has cost him several billion. He has admitted that he just makes up the numbers, and much of his "net worth" is the value of his name and brand. Since he has almost completely trashed what remained as the value of his name his net worth as he figures it has certainly plummeted.

How many buildings have removed that name since he became president? Certainly more than put it up! Plus, not only did it come off a building in Panama...his management company got kicked out too. Wonder how many other times this has happened but it hasn't hit the news?

are you sure this isn't The Onion or The Borowitz report? It's the Trump report. How sad is it that the ridiculousness of his reality trumps their satire? Exactly. In fact I found it hard to read a Borowitz report as satire, that was about Trump strangling family members in front of Congress. Before that was posted I had been trying to think what if anything Trump could do that would cause his supporters to abandon him. I believe he could kill a Democratic congress person and not lose Republican support. The "satire" felt closer to reality than ridiculous impossibility.

Trump put his hand on a bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. Now the Constitution is something 'phony". There is always some weasel language to be found. In his oath of office there is this little nugget: " will to the best of my Ability"
And many didn't really think this six time loser (or are there any bankruptcies that I missed?) had the ability to do the job to begin with!
