Today is Giving Tuesday - anyone besides me participating? If so, which organization(s) are you supporting?

I sit on the foundation board of my professional society’s foundation, and that was my largest gift - money goes to support future engineers at the K-12 and college levels.
I also gave to my kid’s public school foundation - their Giving Tuesday drive donations are being matched, and go to a fund to help low income students earn college credit for classes they’re already taking.
Finally, I made small donations to some organizations that close friends support through Facebook/PayPal. These include a nonprofit to support sexual assault survivors, a suicide prevention nonprofit, stage 4 cancer research, and one for funding a grant through a public school district foundation for a friend’s dad who is retiring (it’s a surprise to him, and the grant is to help new teachers).
There may be more to come...depends on what I see shared that strikes my fancy. Or my liberal bleeding heart that wants to do good. ;-)

I hate "manufactured" holidays even for good causes. I donated to a friend's Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fund raiser a few days ago because she said she'd be matching any donations through today (she's running the Anchorage Marathon in June) but have no plans to give today, just on principle! I have a generous church pledge and then allocate part of my monthly spending to other charities throughout the year. Looks like I'll have another $100 to donate through the end of the year but I have the whole month of December to decide.

I've already been called by the VA, the local humane society and the college I attended, and the kids both came home with fund raising envelopes for their schools. WTH? It's too much pressure for me because I can't give money to everyone all at once.

I donate when I want to donate and to who I want to donate. I don't need to do it on a certain day. I also can't make all my donations on one day. I have an amount budgeted for donations annually. That is what I will donate.

I have never heard of it and no one has approached me for money today. I am kind of frustrated with giving right now, I mailed a check to our local cold weather shelter a few weeks ago because they don't do online donations, and it is still uncashed. I have no clue if it got there or if I even sent it to the right place.

I'm not giving on Giving Tuesday. I don't need a specific day to tell me that I need to get out of my own head and acknowledge that others are in need. I also don't need "reminders" from work and church telling me to be a "good" person. I've got a pile of knitting and crochet that needs to be donated. We give to food pantries during "off" months (like the summer when the need is greater because no holidays) We work at food pantries, sorting through food donations so that others can have fresh food during the summer months. We donate school supplies, clothing, etc to our neighborhood school.
We donate diapers and clothing to the pregnancy crisis center affiliated with our church in October. The volunteer work I do at my kids' school brings in about 3-5K of income a year for the PTA. In the past, I paid for summer camp tuition for one of the low income kids I worked with. I'm not sure how much more I'm supposed to give...

Just donated $20 to Planned Parenthood and $20 to Hope for the Day a Suicide Prevention Program my Husband's cousin was asking for donations for.
I am the kind of person that maybe needs a nudge to donate. Someone offering to double my donation is a decent nudge imho.

I was not planning to, but today I have donated to the CA Fires and my company matches what I give, so double.

I do my annual donations on my birthday. It feels good to start my day with coffee and handing out money to my favorite charities. It's basically my birthday gift to myself.

I tend to give to my favorite charities through out the year. I don't feel the need to make a special donation today.
I don't think those of us who have favorite charities and who donate regularly are the target audience for "Giving Tuesday". I think it's targeted towards people who do not routinely give or who may rarely think about do it. I'm 50/50 on the thing. On one hand it could get people to think about donating and to maybe take action. On the other hand, people will mindlessly give money to just about any thing that says it's a charity as long as there is a feel good involved - even if that charity doesn't do much of anything.

Now I feel bad. I just remembered I had my hands full (and no change) when I walked past the Salvation Army Bell Ringer at the Grocery Store this afternoon.
I have a thing - I always say "If they can stand in the cold and ring the bell, the least I can do is donate". I did not today, because I was parked close to the door and I left my cart in the store, so my hands were full. I also only take my phone, DL and Debit card when I go workout, and I was on my way back to work, so I had no change or small bills on me.

I give throughout the year, to disaster relief, animal welfare and education for girls in Africa. I won't be bullied to give on a certain day.

This is not bullying - you don't have to give anything if you don't want to. I think it makes sense to have this day, especially during the start of the Holiday season. .
#GivingTuesday isn't just about fundraising, it's about communities banding together and giving of their time, power, skills, expertise and resources

As someone mentioned upthread.....if they're calling you repeatedly throughout the day to give, give, give, it sounds like bullying to me. Or maybe harassment. Sure, have a campaign to nudge people in the right direction, but I'd hate to be called over and over again at home. It could be a banner on google or your newsfeeds or Facebook or reminders on social media or even billboards, but please don't bother me at home. I already give plenty.

I saw reminders on internet websites about it being Giving Tuesday. Nobody contacted me for that.
I only give when I feel I can afford it and if I think it will help/make a difference.

I give what I want, when I want blah blah blah, but a post a friend shared about Animal Care and Control Team in Philly reminded me that I had been meaning to donate to their medical fund, so I went to ACCT's website and donated $50.
The cat we adopted in January had his amputation (and chance at a better life) because of this medical fund, the shelter, and the foster who took great care of him before we got him. It was my pleasure to donate yesterday, or any other day.

Yeah, I had three calls between Monday evening and noon on Tuesday reminding me it was Giving Tuesday and that I had donated to their organization in the past. It was super annoying because they were all local numbers so I answered them. I don't typically answer any out of town numbers I don't recognize. I actually gave to two of them because I felt like an ass saying no. The third one I hung up when they transferred me to the one that was going to get my address to send the envelope too. The "choices" for pledge amounts were $50, $100, $500, or $1000. ALL of them were way above what I would be able to donate.

I didn’t get any phone calls - I agree that would be annoying. I had a few emails, plus posts on Facebook that I saw.
We haven’t used all of our “random” charitable budget this year, which is for things like friends doing walks/climbs/runs/whatever, Giving Tuesday, etc. For me, it’s a reminder to give to an organization I may have thought about supporting but never followed up on, or to support some causes that are near and dear to some friends and family.

I received phone calls, emails and snail mail. Didn't donate to a single one of those places. It's irritating.

My phone was quieter yesterday than it ever is. I'm always getting crap solicitation calls and just can't get off the lists. I can't imagine if I was still in sales and had to answer the phone cheerfully anymore.
I also don't get the hate at the idea of a day for donations. I also like small business Saturday as a reminder to get off Amazon and take a look for local business' we can support. I have monthly donations set that I don't even think about much anymore. I guess I just need a little push here and there and things like this work for that. I don't feel guilty if I don't do it. I don't much care what random people think of me, especially when they can't know what I did or didn't donate.

Both of our undergraduate universities went apeshit yesterday in contacting us to give. I deleted no less than 8 emails yesterday from my university, and last night between 6-9 pm, we had 4 calls from TD’s (caller ID well used!).

I got another call today for a "last chance" for Giving Tuesday from my university. I'm not sure what they mean by that...it's Wednesday and I'm guessing they'll still take donations on Thursday. If not, another Tuesday will roll around soon enough.

DH and I support our church either monthly or by an annual contribution from his RMD. I give monthly to an animal rescue group, and we sometimes give to either the local food bank or local little theatre at year-end. Sometime throughout the year we usually pledge to someone participating in a charitable walk-a-thon, generally for breast cancer or ALS. Last week I gave to the Mandarin Immersion School fundraiser because a good friend's son attends there. Last year we supported a local charity responding to the homeless and hungry after Hurricane Harvey in order to help them qualify for a $15,000 matching corporate grant.
I don't mind the Giving Tuesday concept and I think it helps some of the less well known charities, but I don't participate on that date.
Our community held a school supply drive for the local high school (the supplies from the August drive are all used up for sure!) and the principal didn't even say thank you. We are not a wealthy community and his rudeness was noticed. A lot of the donations came from seniors living on SS. It's sad when the students model better values than their school administration.

Not thanking or acknowledging donors is a huge pet peeve of mine. I've been making pledges of $5,000 to be paid over 5 years to the local domestic violence shelter. At one point the pledges overlapped so I was paying $2,000 for a couple of years. I wasn't sure if this was one of those years so after I paid $1,000 I e-mailed them using an address on their site and asked if I owed another $1,000 this year. No response. Well, they didn't GET another $1,000. The former Executive Director is a good friend of mine; maybe the current one does things differently. OTOH, a few years ago the KC Ballet was asking for donations to send Boys' and Girls' Club members to The Nutcracker. I'd had the privilege of watching a kid experience The Nutcracker for the first time on several occasions and even though I tended to support charities for people in need I sent a donation for 4 tickets. After the ballet they sent a thank-you note with a wonderful reproduction of a drawing of the ballet that one of the kids had done. Wow. They haven't asked for similar donations since but I'd sure sign up.

Somebody dumped about 50 cats and kittens near the local Humane Society about a year ago. It happened during the night. Of course, the cats and kittens didn't just sit and wait for people to come to work the next day.
When the employees got to work, cats and kittens were running all over. The saddest part was the Humane Society is located not far from a very busy road and some of the cats got that far and were run over.
They made a plea for donations of a list of items and money. I donated both. I received a phone call when things settled down and a handwritten thank you note a bit later. I do not hesitate to donate to them.

I appreciate a thank you, but don't send me stuffed animals, blankets, greeting cards, tote bags or anything else. That stuff costs money. I want every penny I donate to to the cause.

You used to be able to write a check and smartly cross off your address so they couldn’t sell your name to other charities. That’s not allowed now.

I sit on the culture/arts pillar of my employer’s foundation, and we sponsor a bus/tickets for a class from a local low income school to attend one of their Nutcracker performances. They do an awesome job with sending us thank you emails and stories about comments from the kids / teachers that attended.
