Maybe they can justify it under the Patriot Act?

They are going to lose a lot of accounts over this. In Fl. there are many foreigners who have accts. there but only spend part of the year in Fl....they have them for convenience when they are there. If this freezes their accounts, first they may sue & second they will move the accounts to a friendlier bank.

Hey PK Bucko
It totally is. I hardly ever post on there but read/scroll a fair amount. I did make an exception and post the other day so I could show off the short video of the bald eagle I saw as I left work.

I'm mostly a lurker on FB too. The politics is toxic, so I stay away from that on FB. - So I won't be accused of derailing your thread...lol Bank of America is kind of known for being difficult to work with. I wonder if they'll lose customers but at the same time gain new customers for the exact same reasons.

Awww, you didn't have to go look- I was just teasin' you. I go off of there periodically too though. I get tired of seeing all the negativity. The BoA stuff is just more of it.

I used to frequent a facebook page for people who like a particular podcast and it was generally a very fun and civil group, then a fight started over whether a T shirt with a teepee on it was appropriating native American culture, the racists came out, and podcast group had to shut the whole page down because they had a 'zero tolerance for racists' policy.
Can't have anything nice due to the racists pissing in everyone's cornflakes.

Not to mention BofA operates in 40 countries, so are they just freezing accounts of people with American addresses and non American names? What if someone was foreign student when they opened the account and now live back in one of the other countries BofA operates in?
This is a beyond stupid move! I have my checking, savings, rewards card, mortgage, and safety deposit box with BofA. It might be time to take my business elsewhere!

Add BOA to the list of places I'll never do business with. I've never had a bank account there, never will now.

So believe it or not, my dad is a DT supporter. I am so not. I can't understand why anyone would support that man. Anyway. My dad is also very Mexican and we have a very common Mexican last name. Does it make me a horrible daughter that I kinda hope my dad's account gets frozen for a day or two now? He's very much an American citizen.

I don't understand it either. I love my father, but he's about the most short sighted person I've ever met. I'm surprised we're even related. What's funny is that we look almost exactly alike, but we are two completely opposite people on this subject and many others.

That's not even counting Arizona. Is the bank going to freeze their accounts as well?

It’s very odd as B of A falls all over themselves catering to those from other countries. They were known for giving mortgages and bank accounts to illegals.

We've got an unusual last name, even though DH's side of the family has been here for several generations. My personal nightmare, based on the last name, is to be falsely accused of being an illegal immigrant, after going on vacation outside the US, and not being able to return home. I've told DD to not go outside the US until this nutbag administration is out of office.

I lived in Ca. when BofA was just a state bank. They had offices all up/down the state...BUT, there were 2 customers with the same last name...one in the LA area & the other in the San Francisco area & they got those 2 account mixed up...it was on the news way back then...the fellas they mixed up, their last name started with the letter 'Z'. I decided then I didn't want to bank with them. Over the years, I've worked with many folks who had problems with them...if you had direct deposit, it might not show up in your account until Tue. even though it was transferred early Fri. Getting into my MIL's acct. to pay her bills when she wasn't able to do it was also a nightmare. Blood flow to her brain was being shut off due to a tumor and to try to get her to understand anything was horrible. I finally got through to her that she had to sign her name to the letter I wrote so I could access her account. The bank wouldn't accept a statement from her Dr. nor anyone else...it HAD to have her signature.

That's what I was thinking too - I remember B of A courting illegals as customers. I had to look it up and, sure enough: Bank of America Corp. has begun offering credit cards to customers without Social Security numbers, typically illegal immigrants, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. They need to make up their minds!

I'd like to see a copy of the letter from the BofAm legal department/attorney's that was sent to these people. My bet these people were sent a correspondence asking verification of information and they failed to comply, resulting in their accounts being shut down. Shortly after my DIL received her permanent resident green card, social security# and driver's license my kids opened up a savings, checking, and credit card in her name. They received a letter from BoA wanting to verify information, they ignored the letter...and yep eventually the credit card was frozen. The bank rep made an error in typing her SS# by flipping the last two numbers on the credit card application. It really had nothing to do with her legal status and no other accounts were closed, just the CC. After calling the bank to see what was going on they simply wanted her correct SS#, not a big deal really, simple human error by the bank rep. A new CC was issued and haven't had a problem since.

Did Bank of America Freeze a Customer’s Account to Demand Proof of Citizenship? A Kansas City news photographer said his account was suspended until he told a bank representative he was a U.S. citizen. www.snopes.com/news/2018/08/04/bank-of-america-freeze/bolded part done by me.

Yes, I saw what he said as well. But I can't see how it's even right for them to ask, period.
Edit: Seems like this all has something to do with post - 9/11 patriot act stuff. But seriously, why the guy from Kansas? What would make them question his citizenship?

Hi moon I think it probably has to do with the patriot act. An audit by the Feds may have been done, for whatever reason his account info may have been flagged for an inconsistency? I'm guessing some type of audit was done when it was discovered with my DIL's accounts and the system picked up on that she had 2 different social security#'s listed on different accounts. She had been using that CC for several months before they caught that the SS# was typed in the application incorrectly.
