There was a carjacking incident here abbout ten or so years ago. I have probaby mentioned it here before. A man was driving/exiting a shopping center when a guy walked up to his car and put a gun to the driver's head. The hijacker told the man to get out of the car. As the driver was exiting his car, he reached into the driver side door pocket and grabbed his own gun. The hijacker did not see the man's action. As the hijacker was driving away, the car owner fired his gun and killed the hijacker. The mother of the hijacker was all upset. She wanted the car owner charged with murder. She said her son would never hurt anyone. Lady- your son put a gun to a man's head and threatened to kill the driver. For every action there is a reaction. Had your son not hijacked a car, had your son not used a gun and threatened to shoot the car driver if he did not get out of his own car, your son would be with you today.

NEVER get between a mom & her kids. You might as well take on a grizzly bear. Either way, you lose...

I liked her quote that went something like “I’m no killer, but I will do what I have to to protect my kids”. I’m curious where she shot him, and with what to not cause instant death.

Article I saw said he was shot in the face. Based on info I heard and read, she was in the back seat passenger side and he was in the driver's seat. A head shot seems to be the only real option, so the face if he was turned was where he was hit.

She needs target practice Not sure why. She successfully ended the car jacking without loss of life to herself or her children. She used the level of force necessary to achieve that result. What more could she/should she have done?

We had a carjacking here about 2 years ago. A mother went into the gas station to pay, leaving her baby in the car. As soon as the thief realized there was a child in the car, he abandoned it. The car was found 4 blocks away and everyone was unharmed.

Of course all of this could have been avoided had the mom taken the keys with her and locked the vehicle before she entered the store.
Most of these carjackings and purse snatchings which involve convenience stores and gas stations could be avoided if people locked their vehicles before conducting their business.

Shoot to kill. That close and no kill shot? I suppose she could have taken more time, re-positioned herself and/or fired a few more shots. Of course that could have potentially increased the risk to the children. I would think that they were in the back seats. The angle she shot, up and forward through the body and towards windows, seems smart. One shot and he was headed off the road so additional shoots would have been in a car moving erratically so increased possibility of a bullet going anywhere. She would not have been able to brace herself for impact either, increasing her risk of injury. Firing a "kill shot" sounds cool and tough, but not seeing how anything other than what she did making sense here.

I would have thought her adrenaline would have elicited more shots.

And maybe it's not a good idea to leave little kids alone in a car with a gun in the glove compartment.

But there are so many ways that having a loaded gun left in a car with a 2 & 4 year old could go so terribly wrong I don't even want to think about it. And there's also the fact that if he had just pilfered the glove box while she was inside rather than carjacked her, he would have had a nice free loaded gun now. Hooray for her saving her kids, but a "responsible" gun owner she is absolutely not.

I thought it was in her purse ... She told local media she jumped into the back seat and told the man - later identified by police as 36-year-old Ricky Wright - to stop driving.
After he refused, she reached into the glove compartment to retrieve a handgun, and fired one shot at his face.
"He turned around and looked at me. I reached over the arm rest to get to my glove compartment and that's when I fired at him." (from the link in the OP)

That doesn’t seem feasible. Center console is what I think she is talking about not the compartment on the front passenger side dash.

That seems more like it but stupid not to have it on her. She’s lucky she had a chance to use it.

Avoidance is the best defense. I lock my car at the gas station. I also have just the driver door that unlocks when I stop and shut the car off.

That doesn’t seem feasible. Center console is what I think she is talking about not the compartment on the front passenger side dash. It still seems odd. If she was going for something in the glove box, she had to be right next to the driver. You would think he would have stopped her. Wouldn't you have to have your hips in between the two seats to get to the glove box?
