The amount of people in the pre check line Monday at BWI setting off the metal detector was ridiculous. And then the women with earrings the width of a Coke can act surprised it went off. And empty your pockets in case you need to go through the body scanner!

I've randomly not had to remove my shoes, but it's not consistent even at the same airport at different times. I've also gotten plenty of "take off your belts" "you don't need to remove your belts" at the same places. Typically my experience lately (last 5 years) has been to leave the belt on and take the shoes off.
Ironically in some foreign places where they're doing pat-downs with guys carrying assault rifles...they just let you leave your shoes on. I was untying them trying to take them off because they were SUPER secure about things there (mirrors under vehicles, bomb and drug sniffing dogs, full body patdowns for everyone). But shoes...just leave em on and walk on through. From my observations, requiring the removesl of shoes seems to be a function of shoe style. Specifically the sole thickness. Hiding things in thin soled shoes is hard. Some big, clunky wedge shaped soles could easily be used to transport weapons or explosives.

Some big, clunky wedge shaped soles could easily be used to transport weapons or explosives. It's also a function of whether or not they have metal shanks and will set off the metal detector. In one of the flights I took within India I specifically asked if I needed to remove my boots. No, they said. Beep-beep-beep. Remove boots, put on belt, go through again. My favorite pair of boots is practical and comfortable and I've done a lot of walking in them so I may take them even when traveling light, and they take up too much space in the bag so I just wear them- but they can be a pain at checkpoints.

I remember a long time ago, Janet Napolitano was the head of Homeland Security, said that it wouldn't be long until everyone could leave their shoes on. And, then she left that job, and we still have to take our shoes off.
