The CIA. Pffft. You have to realize that when 65 years of a state of war is ended, denuclearization is achieved, and there's a plan in place to re-unite the two Koreas a lot of wizards of smart, and several ex-Presidents are going to look pretty silly. You'd have to be pretty naive to think they're going to sit idly by without leveraging their old contacts to ensure something transpires to prevent their being exposed as ineffective and incompetent compared to the newcomer.

So if something positive results it is all because of Trump. If it doesn't then it is all because of others sabotaging his greatness.

we all know how that turned out for Hal. HAL actually gets reactivated in the sequel and sacrifices himself to save the second crew that comes to investigate the Odyssey. The second movie also explains why HAL became paranoid in the first film.

But seriously, I think you need a highly unique thought process to think former Presidents would try to put a hand in it. Plus unlike the bad all or nothing thinking of the above, not succeeding sometimes has nothing to do with competence. Sometimes, its not the right time, and you can't make the other party, other country be ready. So this current effort will either succeed or fail. And if it is successful hopefully we will learn of what concessions and other promises that were made to get there.
I think it cheapens this potential achievement to keep slinging standard Trump propaganda.

A reality check and reminder. The elder Kim was in power until his death in 2011. Kim Jong Un was born in 1984. Which puts him at roughly 34 yrs old now and only 28 in 2012. There is a learning curve to being the person in charge. Given his current age and his circumstances especially 2011 and on, I would expect he is not the guy he was in 2011/2012. Hopefully that is a good thing.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_and_state_funeral_of_Kim_Jong-il The death of Kim Jong-il was reported by North Korean state television news on 19 December 2011.[1] The presenter Ri Chun-hee announced that he had died on 17 December at 8:30 am of a massive heart attack while travelling by train to an area outside Pyongyang
His son Kim Jong-un was announced as North Korea's next leader with the title of "The Great Successor" during the same newscast.[5] Jong-il's funeral was held on 28 December in Pyongyang, with a mourning period lasting until the following day.[3]

Not unexpectedly, the lefties on YM have studiously avoided the topic of the Singapore Summit between President of The United States Donald J. Trump And DPRK's Chairman Kim Jong Un... I'm here to assist you. LOL. you must have every thread on Current Events and Politics blocked but yours.

the NYT ran a nice article today on all of the times that NK has promised nuclear disarmament.
it was a good reminder of where we find ourselves this instant. which is probably nowhere.
of course, since anything that undermines the president's message is "fake news", i doubt anyone here posted it.

Neither side gave up anything. There is no deal. Both sides can 'take back' their offers easily.
Do you think it's a coincidence that President Trump promised to suspend joint military exercises with South Korea right after we just got done with joint military exercises with South Korea?
We've got a year to see how it goes.
The Berlin Wall didn't come down the afternoon Reagan gave the speech.

LOL. you must have every thread on Current Events and Politics blocked but yours. query: does the "photoshop rule" not apply to Clinton?, because she would not be caught dead in a Motel 6 like setting watching some teeny piece of crap TV. in fact, neither would most people here. As I have stated many times before here the spirit of the Photoshop rule is to prevent false misleading or deceptive photos from being posted. Obvious parody, or satire in the form of a internet meme very clearly doesn't violate any rules. That doesn't mean the mods won't invent or rule just for me. I'm just stating the facts.

In spite of the fact that we don't have a deal. We are engaged and talks following a period of relative calm.
Chairman Kim Jong Un has not conducted any nuclear test, or fired any ballistic missiles for the better part of a year now.
DPRK has returned 3 hostages without conditions to the United States.
North Korea has physically destroyed one of their nuclear test sites. Could well be their only site. We will obviously need verification, but this is a big public step which we have not seen before.
He has personally articulated a commitment to denuclearization in the context of face-to-face meetings with both South Korean leaders and now the first face-to-face meeting have a North Korean leader with an American president.
It's a big fucking deal.
Sanctions remain in place. We are not air mailing cash. We have a president that knows we are holding all the cards. DPRK has a lot to lose from negotiations falling apart.
Anyone that doesn't think this is a major achievement to get to this point has simply no desire to see it as it is.

The photo of Clinton watching trump and Kim on TV is misleading and deceptive. Yeah, but the defense is straight out of the Trump playbook. 1. Frame the issue favorably to oneself. 2. Create oneself as the victim. 3. Claim oneself as the only truth-teller. How unsurprising.

Is DPRK going to stop sending three generations of people to prison work camps for the crime of one family member? What about our hostiges who they have killed? And, I agree with the comment above that it was a photo op for the two biggest narcissists in the world. Stroking each other's ego was all this was. Well, and the egos of those of their kind who think this "talk" accomplished something for this country. www.nytimes.com/2018/06/11/world/asia/north-korea-human-rights.html

I think there is like 3 threads on the Singapore meeting with NK, and all of them are going with participation from established lefties.
But that can't be....it doesn't fit Paul's narrative.

Anyone that doesn't think this is a major achievement to get to this point has simply no desire to see it as it is. NK has been promising things and then either not doing them and lying about it or reneging on their promise for decades. If you aren't aware of that pattern, you haven't been paying attention.
Mike Pompao said NK would get sanctions lifted only when they have 100% denuclearized. Trump changed that language to 'once NK has made certain steps towards denuclearization' which NK seized on - they are now claiming it will take a really long time to completely denuclearize but Trump promised he would lift sanctions prior to that. Expect NK to make a few concessions, then demand the sanctions be lifted, which Trump will refuse, which will kill the deal completely. That's how the NK roll.
The nuclear test site the NK's blew up had already become unstable and unusable due to past underground tests performed there. They were going to demolish it anyway, they just got extra brownie points pretending they were giving up something by blowing it up.
This was nothing but a propaganda photo op for Kim, and Kim won bigly. He got a US POTUS to fly around the world to meet him - the petty dictator of a broke ass shit hole country - and stroll through gardens and shake hands repeatedly with him. As an extra bonus, no one said a thing about Kim's horrendous treatment of his own citizens, and Trump said a lot of swell things about him.
Members of his own party are disgruntled about it. Dems have some wonderful video footage they can show in the 2020 election cycle, of Trump interacting warmly with the worst dictator in the world.
#WINNING!

The summit was a huge propaganda win for Kim North Korea’s leaders have long wanted to be seen as major players on the world stage and to be accorded the respect and legitimacy given to nuclear powers. And they’ve viewed a one-on-one meeting with the president of the United States as a crucial way to attain that status. Yet successive US presidents — from Bill Clinton to George W. Bush to Barack Obama — have refused to meet face to face with North Korea’s leaders (either Kim Jong Un or his father, Kim Jong Il, who ruled until his death in 2011) for just that reason. “Since I came into office, the one thing I was clear about was, we’re not going to reward this kind of provocative behavior,” then-President Obama said in 2013 about a possible meeting with Kim. “You don’t get to bang your spoon on the table and somehow you get your way.” But that all changed when Trump took office — in part because of Trump’s personality and his belief in his own negotiating abilities, but also because North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities dramatically accelerated to the point that the US was basically running out of options by the time Trump took office. But it’s actually more than that. North Korea didn’t give up anything major in the joint statement after the summit. The language is incredibly soft, with North Korea not making any major concessions to the United States. It’s considerably weaker, in fact, than what previous presidents had gotten during multilateral negotiations with the North. “Each of the four main points was in previous documents with NK, some in a stronger, more encompassing way,” Bruce Klingner, a former CIA deputy division chief for Korea, tweeted on Tuesday. “The [denuclearization] bullet is weaker than the Six Party Talks language.” So Kim gave up nothing and got both a propaganda win and a pledge from the US to suspend military exercises with South Korea. It’s an incredible diplomatic coup. www.vox.com/world/2018/6/14/17463590/north-korea-propaganda-video-trump-kim-summit-watch
