Wow, wasn't it just supposed to be a Category 1? Now they're talking Category 3, & that it'll be hanging around for awhile. (Flooding) Be safe out there!

The off shore drilling rigs are evacuated already. So scary. Predicted 40 inches of rain.

Thanks all! Here in Houston we are teetering between no BFD and Holy Carp! Which is real and true because weather forecasts are part science and part art. I've dealt with tropical events for 33+ years through Florida, Virginia and Texas locales. Today we have five local stations, five forecasts, five spaghetti models. DH and I are fighting over if and when to put up our storm shutters. Hope everyone hunkers down and stays safe. Latest local forecasts predict intense flooding through Wednesday or Thursday which means I will be stuck in the house with DH.

Talked with my daughter south of Austin this morning and they are planning of staying hunkered down at home for the weekend. I'm hoping their home is on high enough ground so they will stay safe.
I hadn't heard that the category had jumped so high. Need to talk to her again

I don't know, if I were in hurricane country, I think I'd want to get out of dodge. Of course, a blizzard is coming and I just think, BFD. My impression of hurricanes, though, is definitely--not a sarcastic--BFD.

Living in North Central FL, most warnings/watches are BFD, but I still keep a sharp eye on the forecasts. It's hard to say if the forecasters are just full of hype or are very serious. We have one that just about p((es his pants any time it storms.
Just watching the latest, and the coast doesn't look good, please stay safe. Now a Cat. 3; it changed very quickly today.

Just talked to daughter and they are as prepared as they can be. They work about 5 miles from where they live but have to cross bridges over 3 creeks. If they go to work tomorrow I think at the first sign of moisture from the sky, they will go home and hibernate. Keeping fingers crossed for my kids

I hate that hype nonsense. One of these days it will be serious and because they act like "chicken little" if there's a lot of rain even, everyone will ignore the warnings and disaster will hit.

Oh, yeah. I called it a weather hard-on. ;-P
They hype up things that turn out to be nothing most of the time, and completely miss some bigger stuff.

We're stocked up on food, water, and gas and called a relative in Dallas to ensure that if we flooded we'd have somewhere to go. I'm at work today, though. Plan is to just hunker down over the weekend and see what happens early next week. The house did fine through TS Allison, the Memorial Day floods, and last April, so we're feeling pretty confident.

Stay safe in Texas, y'all. This looks ugly from a flooding standpoint. It does not take a lot of rain to create a flood that kills. We've been through Andrew (25 years ago yesterday!) and while that was more about wind that flood damage, it is still not pretty to deal with. We want all of you back here to post fun and annoying things, so be careful out there.

The path of this hurricane and category looks like the one that spawned so many tornadoes in San Antonio not long after I moved there. Even as far inland as we were, the damage was considerable.

They do that with tornadoes here. One of the newer guys was jumping all over the screen yelling about a recent storm. He was acting like we were all minutes from dying. DH was confused because if it was that serious the sirens should have been going off. We switched over to a more experienced weatherman and he was like "BFD". We listen to the more experienced guy.

They are calling for lots of rain here and flooding here so I will probably call it a Netflix weekend and mostly stay in. I am pretty well stocked on water, etc. since I went to the store last Sunday. I ran to grocery store over lunch to pick up a few things to make brownies (treats are my main objective when I hear bad weather ). The store was a complete madhouse. It wasn't bad for me because I only had a few items and used self check-out. I will say the store also did a great job of having enough workers and registers open as well. I also told everyone in the office to get out of here by 4PM. I have two employees that are supposed to travel on Sunday. I had one of them change her flight to this afternoon, and we will just pay for the extra nights at the hotel because I am afraid they will not be able to get out of here on Sunday. At least this way one of them will hopefully make the meeting on Monday morning.

I think we'll be marooned in our house for at least one day and maybe more but won't know until the rain hits. Don't expect winds much over 40-45 at this point. Our homes don't flood but the streets do and all we can do is watch the river of floating debris go by. Onshore flows and storm surge into Galveston Bay will complicate local drainage conditions b/c everything goes to the bay. Trapped in the house with DH creates a definite storm potential! If the power goes out and he can't watch MSNBC, we are doomed!

Back in 2008, weather forecasters here in Memphis were predicting severe weather including the possibility of tornadoes mid-to late afternoon. So to be safe the Memphis and county school systems let school out at noon. My friend thought it was ridiculous to let out school so early. About 3 p.m., a severe thunderstorm hit the city and dropped a tornado down about 1 1/2 miles from me. Killed three people. Had the school system not let school out early, students would have been let out just as the thunderstorms and tornado hit. Smart call by the weather forecasters and school system.

I do get annoyed with the local TV channels when they interrupt programs because a severe thundstorm is hitting the city or surrounding county. It's just a severe thunderstorm. Happens quite often here.
Unless the severe thunderstorm indicates a funnel cloud or a tornado is on the ground, no need to broadcast weather information for several hours nonstop and until the thunderstorm or line of thunderstorms clear the area.

Just rain here. Nothing major yet but flooding is still an issue as this storm will sit over us for a bit. I went to zumba class this morning and ran a few errands. Been in since about 1PM. Made brownies and finished Rectify on Netflix.

A squadron of helicopters just flew overhead heading SSW. Most likely they belong to some state's ANG.

Thank you, I'm sort of familiar with the Army National Guard, but not the Air Notional Guard.
