I'm clueless tonight but the state's ANG?? I don't know what that is. We have an Air National Guard base here in Memphis.

Thank you, I'm sort of familiar with the Army National Guard, but not the Air Notional Guard. There's one here too, in Madison at Truax Field, as well as in Milwaukee. I only know a bit about them because years ago DH worked on the base in Milwaukee where they were stationed. He's a weapons guy and apparently they have some cool weapons, or so I hear. I hope the NG is able to help sort things out in Texas, the pictures looks pretty devastating.

Thank you, Tennesseer and daisy, for the explanation, I guess I need to broaden my knowledge. When ever we have a need, it's always been the National Guard and I just assumed Army National Guard.

Checking in from Houston. I am fine-trapped in house by flooded streets but no water in house which puts me in a way better situation than tens of thousands of folks. For once, the news folks aren't exaggerating one bit - the scale of the damage is impossible to grasp. Helicopters have been surveying the area, they have appealed for any private high-water rescue vehicles or boats to respond to the fire stations, and we've been hearing airboats running the area all day. Yes, state and national troops are being deployed to the area but having a tough time getting here. We have power and municipal water supply is good so no problems here. We will have another two days of rain and our situation will depend entirely on the rainfall we get and whether or not there is a break between bands. Most folks in my subdivision have reported about 21 inches in the last 48 hours. I do know we had 5 inches in less than an hour last night which was not fun. And the tornado warnings scared the bejabbers out of everyone. I'm tired of stuffing the cat in a carrier and hunkering down in the hallway for periods of time.

Tornado strikes can be especially deadly if people have taken refuge in their attics or are on top of their house's roof because the lower levels of their homes are flooded.

We are in the same situation as @donethat. The street is flooded at either end, but nothing near the house. We are at about 18" in the past 48 hours. The local bayou gauge shows within 6" of the top of the bank 3 different times today, but we keep getting a break just when we need one. We at least have peaked out at 1.92" an hour, so that probably explains it. Two inches an hour is what the bayous are generally designed for, per local news reports.

My Brays Bayou went out of banks this a.m. but so far, so good for the house. As others have mentioned, Houston area roadways are actually designed to function as drainage channels and keep water out of homes. Buffalo Bayou isn't doing a great job of that lately, and Brays may fail with further rains but I am hoping and praying and hoping and praying...... Glad you are okay Spartan!

That's great the roadways were designed as drainage channels. I wonder how much they are designed to deal with. I hope your breaks and luck holds.

When I was growing up in Springfield Mass, in the next town over was Westover Air Force Base. During the Vietnam War, Westover was a major base for long-range B52 bombers. To the west of Springfield, a section of a rual highway was built wide enough and built long and straight enough for a B52 to land during an emergency.

Prayers for your Pearland family. Heavy rains hitting inner city Houston right now but I think Pearland caught the break in rainfall earlier like we did.

I think most of the family went to Alabama to my nephew's house, I just haven't heard yet. Best wishes to you.

Daughter between Austin and San Antonio is doing OK ........... went to work today and everyone is keeping watch on the clouds. Another friend 10 miles north said she is seeing blue sky Hopefully what comes through now will get lighter, although daughter said all the run-off in her area goes to Houston and it's not needed there. Everyone in Texas start blowing to the west so AZ can have some of that moisture.

Today saw water up, down and up again. We still have virtually no homes flooding in my 'hood, but more mandatory evacs of surrounding communities as rising rivers and controlled releases at local reservoirs take effect. It will get much worse for many before it gets better. Over 2,000 high water rescues so far, mega-shelters opened and, sadly, death toll rising. Houston will survive but major changes on in our future.

Praying for everyone in areas affected by Harvey. We went through the flooding 23 years ago in south Georgia due to a slow moving tropical storm. Not nearly as bad as Harvey though.
DH and I are concerned because DD is planning to drive from AL to San Antonio to visit her DH in the Army for Labor Day weekend. Shortest route is to take I-10 through Houston, but she will likely take I-20 route. She is leaving Friday and will likely still be going through a lot of rain. DH and I would like her to change her plans, but she has only seen her DH 1 weekend in the last 5 months.
