Which of the following behaviours constitute racism? - At a dinner party, Bob claims "Asians are smarter than whites," citing a 2008 Swedish study on general intelligence that includes statistics categorized by race.
- Jill, a white woman who was once assaulted by a black man, crosses the street whenever she sees a large black man approaching on her side of the sidewalk.
- Mary declares at a political rally, "Most white cops--nearly all of them--are racist."
- Joe keeps a Confederate flag--a keepsake from his childhood--in his bedroom window. He refuses to take it down even after several people insist it's a symbol of racism and makes them uncomfortable.
- Holly claims she would never marry a black man because she finds them loud and unattractive.
- Jim asks Lo, a newcomer to his town of obviously Asian descent, "Are you from China?"
- Peter, a white man, is a firm believer in Affirmative Action and racial quotas. "Black communities need a leg up to compensate for other systemic inequalities," he claims.
- Donna argues online, "All lives matter. White privilege is just and excuse made up by black people."
- Les, a Korean man, refuses to hire anyone except Koreans to work in his shop.
- Kim, a deeply religious woman, disapproves of interracial marriages, sincerely believing that God intended the races be kept separate and distinct.
- Roy, an ethnic Jew, maintains a site "sonsofishmael.com" documenting atrocities committed by Arabs and defending a thesis that Arabs are a violent and factious people by nature.
- Maude, a black professor of sociology, pens an op ed asking readers to eschew citing the research of white sociologists, arguing their research is inherently biased and instrumental in the perpetuation of dangerous stereotypes.
- Neil, an Asian man, is an outspoken proponent of racial profiling for police work, believing that profiling makes policing smarter and more effective.
- John, a man indifferent to race, refuses to stop hanging out with Ellis, his childhood friend and an outspoken white supremacist, simply because of his beliefs on race.
- Gary, a black TV entertainer, frequently pokes fun at whites, mocking their dancing and driving abilities in particular.
- Kate, a white woman, and her friend Katelyn, a black woman, agree in a discussion that "there's a difference between blacks and (N word)s".
- James categorically refuses to hire another aboriginal man after his previous two aboriginal employees suffered problems with alcohol abuse.
- Jeanine, a full-time volunteer for a NGO in the Black Lives Matter movement, argues on her blog that modest taxes should be levied on white Americans to fund a reparations package intended to compensate "people of colour" from past injustices such as slavery.
- Ellie, a white New Englander, reflexively calls white debate opponents racist and bigoted when she perceives she's losing an argument.
- Joseph, a Texan, sincerely believes the influx of Mexican migrants to the US is a threat to the stability and prosperity of the nation.
As a special request from me: if posters wouldn't mind making this thread about issues and ideas rather than specific people, I'd appreciate it. What does racism mean to you? 1- not racist as the belief is based on fact 2- not racist - she has a reason to be afraid and we don't know if she is afraid of all men or just black men. 3- Racist 4- Not racist - making someone uncomfortable is not the definition of racism 5- Not racist - we all have our "type" 6- Not racist 7- not racist 8, 11, 13, 14, 15 - not racist 9 - not sure - leaning towards racist 10, 12, 16, 17 - racist 18 & 19 - morons but not racist 20 not racist

Jill, a white woman who was once assaulted by a black man, crosses the street whenever she sees a large black man approaching on her side of the sidewalk. So is Jill being racist by reacting in a way that lumps all large black males into the category of threat? I contend she is. Should she be condemned for that? I contend she shouldn't. I think she needs counseling to help her not engage in this behavior (and if her time on planet runs out before she is over it enough to not cross the street, it is what it is). Holly claims she would never marry a black man because she finds them loud and unattractive. If Holly claimed that she would never marry a man she finds loud and unattractive, that wouldn't be racist. If she claimed she hasn't met a black man yet she found attractive and that all of them have been loud, that wouldn't be racist. But her claim is that all black men she has or will ever meet (note she said "never") for her entire life are loud and unattractive to her. That is racist.

I don't find really skinny men attractive. I don't find pasty white men attractive. How is that any different than not finding black men attractive? You can't help who you are attracted to.

You can't help who you are attracted to. There are short men of every race. There are skinny men of every race. "Pasty" is a small subset of white men. Holly's criteria is exclusive and includes all males of one race. I find her declaring every black man she had ever or will ever meet as "loud" the more telling part of her statement.

What is Racism? It used to have meaning. Now, it really doesn't. It just means anyone who opposes the old failed corrupt political orthodoxy. Seriously- that's what it means now. It has no other serious cultural or contextual meaning. Like liberalism-- it has been completely redefined by political propagandists. aka "your team" edit: one of my friends suggested that we stop calling racists racists, and call them "white-privelage-ists", because that is pretty much what they are. they like having the advantage, and they hate giving it up. they hate it so much that they will go buy some stupid uniforms, pack up their guns, and drive for a day to intimidate leftists, at certain risk to themselves, their jobs, and their reputations. White privilege is just an anti-white racist term. There are two and only two advantages (forms of privilege) in this world- and only two: 1. Wealth. If you're rich, you have a tremendous advantage over others less so. 2. Physical attractiveness. Plenty of people have overcome unattractiveness to become wildly successful, but it's inarguable that physically attractive people have an advantage- and this, to be blunt, is the real focus of modern feminism. There are exceptions, but as a rule, feminism is about the advancement of women disadvantaged by their relative unattractiveness.

Which of the following behaviours constitute racism? - At a dinner party, Bob claims "Asians are smarter than whites," citing a 2008 Swedish study on general intelligence that includes statistics categorized by race. Not racist. It is a statement of fact supported by data. The data may be challenged by the presentation of conflicting data, supported by other data, but Bob's personal feeling about Asians or Whites, given no additional details or context, is not up for debate.
- Jill, a white woman who was once assaulted by a black man, crosses the street whenever she sees a large black man approaching on her side of the sidewalk. Not racist. She makes no judgment about the relative superiority or inferiority of people based on skin color, but she is prejudiced based on her experience. Predjuices and stereotyping are not in and of themselves racist.
- Mary declares at a political rally, "Most white cops--nearly all of them--are racist." Racist. A blanket judgement, unsupported by data, or even anecdotal personal experience, based purely upon skin color is the very definition of racism.
- Joe keeps a Confederate flag--a keepsake from his childhood--in his bedroom window. He refuses to take it down even after several people insist it's a symbol of racism and makes them uncomfortable. Not racist. Joe's refusual to give in to the interpretation of his keepsake by others that it means something to them that it does not mean to him is rude and insensitive, and show's Joe's immaturity in taking into consideration the feelings of others, but it is not racist. Joe is an asshole, not a racist.
- Holly claims she would never marry a black man because she finds them loud and unattractive. Not racist. I like blondes and prefer green eyes to blue- it's purely subjective. Not finding certain traits attractive is not an indication of an attitude of racial superiority.
- Jim asks Lo, a newcomer to his town of obviously Asian descent, "Are you from China?" Not racist. An indication of social akwardness, perhaps a little insensitive, but again- no indication that Jim thinks anything one way or the other about race.
- Peter, a white man, is a firm believer in Affirmative Action and racial quotas. "Black communities need a leg up to compensate for other systemic inequalities," he claims. Not racist. He is proposing reverse racial discrimination- disadvantaging white candidates who had nothing to do with past discrimination against blacks, in favor of blacks who suffered no discrimination which will result in future resentment and inequity which will then require a remedy in an endless cycle of tit for tat instead of moving ahead with a morally sound merit-based society. But Peter is not indicating he believes one race is superior to the other. He is ignorant, and misguided- but not a racist.
- Donna argues online, "All lives matter. White privilege is just and excuse made up by black people." Not racist. Donna is simply expressing an opinion that "BLM" is an excuse to claim victim status and special treatment by some black people and supported by some ignorant and misguided white people.
- Les, a Korean man, refuses to hire anyone except Koreans to work in his shop. Unclear. He may simply prefer people with whom he relates and which easily speak his native tongue. He may be racist, but I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
- Kim, a deeply religious woman, disapproves of interracial marriages, sincerely believing that God intended the races be kept separate and distinct. This chick is a racist.
- Roy, an ethnic Jew, maintains a site "sonsofishmael.com" documenting atrocities committed by Arabs and defending a thesis that Arabs are a violent and factious people by nature. Racist.
- Maude, a black professor of sociology, pens an op ed asking readers to eschew citing the research of white sociologists, arguing their research is inherently biased and instrumental in the perpetuation of dangerous stereotypes. Racist
- Neil, an Asian man, is an outspoken proponent of racial profiling for police work, believing that profiling makes policing smarter and more effective. Unclear. It is true that profiling young males- of any race- would yield better results than pretending all people of every age and gender are equal. Most crime, and most acts of terror are committed by young males. By the way, I have a muslim friend very adamant about the need for a muslim reformation that thinks young muslim men should be restricted from US Visas until such time as the reformation has taken root.
- John, a man indifferent to race, refuses to stop hanging out with Ellis, his childhood friend and an outspoken white supremacist, simply because of his beliefs on race. Not racist. Poor judgment- but there's nothing inherently racist about hanging out with racists. By the way- if you disagree, stand by for a list of known associates of Bill & Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama...
- Gary, a black TV entertainer, frequently pokes fun at whites, mocking their dancing and driving abilities in particular. Not racist. We could use more humor that centers around racial stereotypes. I find white stereotypes entertaining because as a white guy- I know white people, and a little bit of truth makes for good comedy.
- Kate, a white woman, and her friend Katelyn, a black woman, agree in a discussion that "there's a difference between blacks and (N word)s". Not racist. Obviously, her black friend (and many other black people) agree that the "N-word" might describe the black version of "white trash". They are guilty of being politically incorrect, not racist. How could her black friend be racist anyway?
- James categorically refuses to hire another aboriginal man after his previous two aboriginal employees suffered problems with alcohol abuse. Unclear. He might be racist. He is definitely predjudiced. But that's not the same thing.
- Jeanine, a full-time volunteer for a NGO in the Black Lives Matter movement, argues on her blog that modest taxes should be levied on white Americans to fund a reparations package intended to compensate "people of colour" from past injustices such as slavery. Unclear. She might be racist, or she might just be ignorant and misguided regarding the fact that reparations have been made in the form of citizenship and our current meritocracy.
- Ellie, a white New Englander, reflexively calls white debate opponents racist and bigoted when she perceives she's losing an argument. Not racist. Insecure, ignorant, illogical and a bad loser- but not racist.
- Joseph, a Texan, sincerely believes the influx of Mexican migrants to the US is a threat to the stability and prosperity of the nation. Unclear. Joseph the Texan understands that the influx of uneducated, low-skilled, low IQ people from another culture predisposed to strong-man type leadership, and uninterested in assimilation and support for our Constitution and way of life "without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion" definitely have a destabilizing effect. But there's no clear indication of racism in that assessment.
As a special request from me: if posters wouldn't mind making this thread about issues and ideas rather than specific people, I'd appreciate it. What does racism mean to you? Is this complete?

By the way- how's Africa doing? Have they ended slavery yet? No, huh? Well-- who knows- maybe the dark continent will catch up with the United States one day. Who knows- maybe the Muslim world will advance to where we are now?

Who knows- maybe the Muslim world will advance to where we are now? Paul you realize we still have slavery in this country, right? People conned into coming here on the promise of a great job, only to find themselves forced to work in sweat shops and locked in the maintenance closet over night.
Housemaids and nannies forced to work for room and board, women and boys forced into prostitution.
Then there's the mentally ill and homeless, some of them vets, who end up living under bridges. Bet you don't see that in a lot of other first world countries. Just us.
So please let's stop pretending we're so far advanced from other nations that our shit doesn't stink.

I remember someone who said his grandma used the word ni@@er quite frequently at home. #RacistInIllinois. My DH's uncle did that at family gatherings, while he was explaining, in detail, why there would never be a black quarterback because 'none of them are smart enough.'
I'm so pleased he managed to live to see the day we had a black POTUS (although possibly that's what helped to kill him.)

By the way- how's Africa doing? Have they ended slavery yet? No, huh? Well-- who knows- maybe the dark continent will catch up with the United States one day. Who knows- maybe the Muslim world will advance to where we are now? Paul you realize we still have slavery in this country, right? People conned into coming here on the promise of a great job, only to find themselves forced to work in sweat shops and locked in the maintenance closet over night.
Housemaids and nannies forced to work for room and board, women and boys forced into prostitution.
Then there's the mentally ill and homeless, some of them vets, who end up living under bridges. Bet you don't see that in a lot of other first world countries. Just us.
So please let's stop pretending we're so far advanced from other nations that our shit doesn't stink.
There's no pretending. We're past it. The problems facing the African-American community today have zero to do with the legacy of slavery, or the institutional racism of the Democratic South, or racist cops. What is ailing African-Americans today is big government, and if they ever figure that out- the Democratic Party is OVER. The "war on poverty" welfare state taking the place of the father economically and destroying the African-American family, the "war on drugs", bad immigration policy, the failed government schools, minimum wage laws, bad trade deals-- a permanent political class from Hollywood to K Street, from Washington, D.C. to Silicon Valley, from the big Blue ghettos to the big Red Chamber of Commerce-- have committed an economic hate crime against the poor and working class in America and NOTHING has hurt African-Americans more than this. No, it certainly is NOT 'racism' hurting African-Americans. It's big government. But more than that- it's big government that no longer even pretends to care about African-Americans The politicians have long since moved on from courting African-Americans. They've got illegal aliens now- the transgendered, and otherkin to worry about. Like Trump said: What the hell have you got to lose?

I definitely agree that Big Govt is a problem disguised as a solution. I do not agree on these so-called "alternatives" you spoke of earlier. If you were black in 'Murica in 1910, where were your kids going to school? I was not under the impression that there was a plethora of choices for black families. I mean they may have had choices between the subpar black facilities, but it's like choosing between chicken and beef flavored dog food when you know there is steak and potatoes out there that you can't have because you happened to have more melanin.

I'll have to let my African American neighbor that it was "big govt" that trenched his yard & spray painted the n word on his garage door & driveway. Must have also been "big govt" that left a confederate flag across his doorstep. I'm sure he'll feel safer knowing it wasn't the local KKK guys that are driving around with confederate flags & screaming at black people around town.

GMAFB I'm not sure if this is addressing me as well as Paul, but while I believe Big Govt is a problem, it certainly isn't the only problem. Looking at news coverage and talking to people, we have definitely gone backwards.

The idiots got convicted of a hate crime and are now sitting in federal jail. I'll have to tell them to appeal their case because Paul says there is no racism in 'Merica anymore, so all they were guilty of doing was starting a bonfire. Throw in some weenies and it'd be nothing worse than a picnic.

MJ says: thank you, white people, for allowing my descendants that were brought here against their will and enslaved for 250 odd years and then forced to use subpar schools and facilities for another 100 odd years, to be citizens in this country.
I haven't read all 5 pages but I did happen to see this comment ....... sorry for nit-picking but I think (hope) you mean ancestors instead of descendants
My definition of racism is someone that sees nothing but differences between people. My take biblically is God has made laws of nature ... which means to me that species should not mix.
Does anyone have a mixed breed puppy ...... or kitty? In your puppy's ancestry, what are the different colors of fur/skin? Same for kitties .......
Horses? Pigs? Chickens?
I have a cousin that sees skin color in everything ..... very much on the defensive about it.
I pity her ....... and ignore her.

So the government under this flag put the racists in jail for the crime of intimidation. Thanks. You just made my point.
