I go to Fantastic Sam's with a coupon every 6-8 weeks. Cost is $14 + $2 tip
My hair style is wash and wear ...... however it lays after combing and drying.

I don't color my hair because- phew!- my natural color is fantastic.
Mine was too at your age!
I color my hair my natural color, but at this point (57, and I only started when I was 56, so pretty late in life) I prefer to hide the grey.

Then I had kids The number of grey hair one has is directly proportional to the number of years one has been a parent. Twice as proportional actually! Those suckers are so worth it but man does it take a toll on you.

Cookies Galore I was lucky and only started going (slightly) grey in my early 50s. My mom and sister started dying theirs in her 30s. I spent years wondering if I should dye it or not, have it done or do it myself ... In the end I put it off (for 5 years lol) but finally decided I wanted to dye it for DS1's wedding last Sept. My hairdresser told me I should NOT get it dyed for the first time for an important occasion, I should "test it" first. So I dyed it before last summer, and I LOVED having my natural color back! I dyed it again right before the wedding, but since I had done it before the summer, nobody noticed. So now I keep it up, despite the fact that I am antsy / impatient and HATE sitting still at the hairdresser's. I'd look better if I did it every 3 months (rather than every 4 months) though. ETA: I envy my late MIL's frankness. When she was asked how she wanted her hair cut, she told the hairdresser, "in silence". LOL!!!

Based on my coppery/strawberry coloring and family reference (aunt and grandmom with similar hair color), I have a good decade ahead of me! I gave hubs a lot of his grays, but damn if he don't look good!

It's reasonable that this is going to vary widely in different COLAs and depending on our own hair and preferences.
I live in a MCoLA. My hair is wavy and blonde, but it's gotten darker as I get older and now I'm starting to get a fair amount of greys that mostly blend with the blonde color wise but are a different texture (stiffer, slightly more curly). I'm active and impatient, so need a cut that doesn't require a lot of styling. It's hard to find someone that can not only cut wavy hair and even harder to find someone who can cut wavy hair in a low maintenance style. And since my hair grows about an inch a month, cuts can look ragged more quickly. That's also why I won't color unless/until the color goes really grey since I'd have to do it once a month and even then would have a full inch of ugly roots.
So I get highlights 2-3 times a year when I need a little change, get it cut every 6 weeks and get a Keratin treatment 3-4 times a year. The keratin isn't enough to make it stick straight but controls the frizz and on the rare days I blow dry it, makes it dry quickly and smoother.
Cut and style $85 incl tip Keratin $200 incl tip Don't get highlights often enough to remember, maybe $100?

debthaven I'm hoping I will be well into my 40s before I get a gray and have to figure out what I want to do! I was 45 when I saw my first. Hadn't really "seen" it, just asked my hairstylist why those 2 hairs were sticking straight up (both stuck straight up about 2"-3", looked funny) and she said, "oh those are grey hairs. Looks like your greys are going to be a different texture than the rest of your hair." Me: Fantastic. Now I'm seeing a few more mixed in. They're more silvery and reflect light differently than the blonde. Two of my grandparents had beautiful white hair so I'm still hoping I'll get more of that and less of the iron grey the other two grandparents had. Hey, if it's going to be a different texture and stick straight out, the least it can do is be considerate enough to be a color that blends with the rest of my hair and goes with my complexion!

Is "fanrastic" a thing now? I kinda dig it! Timely thread as I just spend $180 on box braids (extensions). I have a tolerate/hate relationship with my hair. I do not like it curly/wavy, but it is very unhealthy and breaks like crazy when I straighten it. I'm trying again to go back to natural. This is the first step. I haven't had it straightened since January. Braids should stay in for 8-10 weeks. Then I'll give my hair a break for about a month and just use rollers. Then braids again to the tune of the same amount. Rinse and repeat until my hair is long enough to do roller/braid sets and faux buns on.

Then I had kids The number of grey hair one has is directly proportional to the number of years one has been a parent. Twice as proportional actually! Those suckers are so worth it but man does it take a toll on you. so how did I get screwed here? my grey isn't just grey, it's silver. at least I'm like my mom in this aspect - it's growing in all salt and pepper, so when I do decide to cave, it won't look awful (I hope....) I used to go for full foil highlights 2x/yr for a long time, then 3x/yr, and now I just went once for a roots touch-up of a single color and I hated it. so I think I'm going to be looking at 4x/yr for at the very least a half foil for highlights. full foil where I go is about $125 plus tip. half is probably $75, the touch-up was $55. I'll cut it every other trip, sometimes every 3rd. I think that adds $40 to the tab, including a blowout. my hair has always had a ton of colors and textures, the single color was just jarring to me. it looked fine, but it wasn't me. my stylist uses a tiny pick to pull what she's going to paint, and she's the master at taking pretty much ALL of the silver to color. she's been leaving some the past few years, since I am no longer in my 20s, but I've been seeing silvers since I was in college. hmm.....for styling? I buy Suave knockoffs of the Nexxus shampoo and conditioner (<$3/huge bottle each), Tresemme hairsprays for either containing a pulled-back look or fine mist to hold straightened hair ($4/huge can each). that's it for product, and my flat iron was $30 last summer. my hair dryer is from college, I think it's paid for.

There is a woman at work who has black hair and recently I've noticed white hair coming in like Cruella Deville. I have to admit, I'm kind of jealous. She rocks it!

Ooh product! I also like Tresemme hair spray. I mainly use cleansing condition a few times a week - L'Oréal Evercurl or Clairol (?) Hair Food from Target. I've used others, but those I buy most consistently. Dove dry shampoo for no washing days. Aveda Style Prep Smoother helps my wavy hair air nicely. I have lots of other lotions and potions, I just love hair and makeup!

We are polar opposites. I can't stand hair product and think (most) makeup looks odd on me. I think hair product makes my hair feel "weird" - either slightly sticky or stiff, so don't use it. And any makeup other than some brown mascara on the upper lashes and maybe 2-3 times a year some subtle eyeliner and bronzish eyeshadow is just too dark and looks weird. I'm a happy heathen.

I have silver hairs coming in.... at least my gray hair will look good! AA hair = 10000000 different shampoos, deep conditioners, leave-ins, moisturizers, and styling products. I refuse to add up all the money I've spent on hair products. I will say that Eden Naturals coconut shea butter leave in conditioner is essential - it's also good for all hair types. Makeup - $32 Bare Minerals foundation powder, $5 clear mascara for brows, and some sort or lip gloss or moisturizer.

It has been so stressful lately and I just need a break! Having weird "blondes" sticking straight up out of my curly/wavy hair is not the cure all I was looking for. I don't know what to do, I'm hesitant to color it but I also don't want to look like a freak. I need to act fast!

2-3 times a year- $30-$40. I realized in the past two years that I have curly hair, and a layered cut + air drying with +curl enhancing hair product looks pretty good. I regret that I didn't know this while in courting mode. I thought I had straight hair because I'm theoretically mostly Japanese. I don't always bother with the product since my hair is mostly in a ponytail all day to keep it out of my kids hands, but it also has the added effect of making my hair a little grippy so that the rubber band stays in, so win win. I've had white hairs for ten years or more. Haven't dyed, probably not going to dye because I imagine you need to keep up with that more than every 6 months.

I go to either Great Clips or Hair Cuttery to get my hair cut and DD's. I used to cut DD's myself but I admitted about a year ago and pay to get hers done. She loves it!! The last time we got our hair cut was 4 months ago or so, and it was $10 or so per cut (plus tip) as they were running a special as that particular Hair Cuttery was opening. Usually it's 20 or so and a little less for DD when we go. Now that both DD and I are growing our bangs out, we don't need to go as much. I've been thinking of coloring my hair (have a gray here or there for a few years and started pre-DD), but I'm too chicken to do it and not sure I want to maintain it either. Since I work from home, I may get up the nerve to do it but I'm not holding my breathe on it. With makeup, I don't wear it. I think the last time I wore any of it was a job interview almost 4 years ago. I can remember begging my mom for it, and she said no, not until you are 16 and can pay for it yourself. Once I turned 16, I wanted to spend my money on other things instead and still do to this day.

$100 every six weeks for a color, and then $50 every other month for a cut. I usually get my brows waxed at the same time as a color, which is another $25.
My hair is now white. I've been going gray since I was 13, and I've been coloring my hair since I was 15. I'm now 39. I figure the hair coloring is a fixed cost now.

I just started getting my hair dyed a few months ago, said I never would.
I get it cut maybe every 2 months and dyed about then.
DD's hair has to be cut monthly and have hers dyed too, more white then mine.
Mine is $60 and $25 for a cut, hers the same just more often, but her SS pays for it.

Hair care is not one of my splurges. Cut once every couple of months (although sometimes I procrastinate) at Great Clips-$13. I did buy a $10 bottle of shampoo because the cheapie VO-5 seemed harsh. Too cheap and too lazy to color my hair, which is a pretty shade of grey but most definitely grey.
I'll probably spend more on getting my bike overhauled this week than I spend on my hair in a year. Those are my priorities.

Three easy payments of $19.95 for my vacuum cleaner haircutting attachment. Word of warning: should not be used on pubes.

How would you all compare a brazilian blowout to a keratin treatment? I've done 2 brazilians and I like the result, but I know my stylist is trying to get away from the chemicals. We're going to do a keratin next trip.
My hair is too wavy to be straight, and too straight to be wavy. Frizz goes crazy, but isn't very thick. I just want something that looks decent without blowdrying/curling each morning, which the brazilian provides for the most part. Although I'm almost tempted to go back to a perm as that was the easiest wash and wear style I've had as an adult.

$40 3-4 times a year for a cut. I don't color my hair. I'm fine with my black hair with white highlights. I used to color it but it was too hard to keep up with. Plus my hair was waist length at that time and it was a big hassle. It's shoulder length now and I'm still not going to dye it.

I don't know since I never tried a brazilian blowout. I really like the keratin, but not sure about it being without chemicals. Don't buy the BS - it's still chemicals. Nasty, stinky, strong chemicals. But they do nice things to your hair.

Am I the only one who wants to see pics of everyone posting on this thread?
BTW, there is only one good thing left about my hair (well, besides the fact that I still have it) - I don't think getting gray hair is going to happen to me for a looong time.
Oh and my hair completely changed after I had kids and not for the better

Maybe it's a matter of degrees or amounts, but keratin treatments have formaldehyde in them, too. They rename it and do their best to make it sound like a more natural alternative, but bottom line is there is still formaldehyde in there because that's one of the ingredients that chemically alters your hair. If I were a stylist, I not only wouldn't apply any of this stuff, I wouldn't work in a salon where they were applying it. Not that being a customer having it applied is completely without risk, but it's one thing to be exposed for a few hours 3-4 times a year versus working 8+ hours a day/40 hours a week breathing that stuff in.

I started getting some grey around my part line in my mid 40's so I started dying it then. In my 60's I developed a reaction to the chemicals so my hairdresser went to a type that doesn't have the chemicals my dermatologist said to avoid. Now 5 years later, I'm allergic to something in that too, so I've stopped dying my hair. It's now white all around my face and at the neckline, but I have very little grey at the crown, so it looks kind of funny to me. I've gotten lots of compliments on my "haircut", but it's funny that I've had the same cut for years.

I got my hair cut yesterday. I feel SO MUCH BETTER! I really need a haircut every 6 weeks but I always stretch it out to 8 weeks because money. Same with the color. I stretch out to every 4 months, but every 3 months would be much better. Part of my reluctance is money, but part of it is also because I hate "just sitting there" waiting for the color to take. By coincidence, a friend I hadn't seen in months walked into the salon with me. She was getting a color, I was getting a cut. The owner decided to cut my hair in the coloring section so my friend and I could continue to talk. The hairdresser took me 25 min late, which would generally have made me CRAZY. But I was so happy to see N, I barely noticed lol! (I did make a comment about being late though, because I would NOT want that to become a habit.) N and I decided that this was actually a FANTASTIC way to catch up with friends ... to make a salon appt together! So, we decided to call each other before we book our next appt and try to book it together. ETA: I also don't like being touched by people I barely know, and it takes forever for them to wash my hair. I can wash it and condition it in 2 min! I used to refuse to have it washed at the salon but then I realized I was reducing their income and coming off as a cheapskate / crazywoman. And I really like the owner / my hairdresser. So now I always tell them oh sorry I washed it JUST last night/this morning so just a very light shampoo please, no treatments, thankyouverymuch, and I tip the shampoo girl very nicely. AND THANK YOU BUT NO HEAD MASSAGES FOR ME PLEASE. Am I seriously the only person in the world who does NOT want a head massage from a stranger just because I'm getting my hair cut?! Every time I say that (with gritted teeth), the shampoo girl looks at me like I've just told her I'm a Satanic worshipper who is in a rush to murder a few more kids and animals. And by the way, I have a piece of fresh liver in my handbag, would you like to taste? WHY?! AM I THE ONLY PERSON IN THE ENTIRE WORLD WHO DOESN'T WANT A HEAD MASSAGE WHILE I'M SILENTLY SUFFERING THROUGH LETTING THE SHAMPOO GIRL (OR BOY) WASH MY HAIR?!

I wash my hair before my salon appointment because the position of my neck on the sink gives me a headache. My hair is short and I would rather lean over the sink instead of laying my head on the curve of the sink. My hairdresser does not mind, but I do give her a generous tip.
