I'm in the UK so we don't have as many choices of dog food as you guys. My Collies are on a top of the range chicken and rice kibble (Arden Grange) .... which I top up with allergen free for the young male because he is hyperactive and skinny. In addition they get fish skins for treats ... and a can of sardines in tomato sauce between them when we are racing. Its a pretty good diet and they are, bright, muscley, shiny, super active and not over weight......... so thats good enough for me. The only time I was really careful was when they were growing pups..... I spent a bit more... and everything they ate was nutritious.... as opposed to any rubbish. I just wanted them to have a good start when they were growing and laying down bone. it goes down well.....and nice firm poop (dog owners will understand this)

We can use that firm poop to fill up our bait packages we leave at our front door to get even with the thieves, aka 'porch pirates', who steal packages from our front doors.

I thought grain free wasn't recommended because so much of the good stuff they need was cut out of grain free. Not that the grain free stuff is bad necessarily, just that what was missing outweighed the benefits.

But now I’m not so sure. Will browse a few brands tomorrow at a couple of pet stores. He’s not eating the dry stuff we’ve always served, so MIGHT try one with grain to switch it up a bit.

There s a "Which" report on the nutitional value of all the dog food brands.... for the UK Might be a comparison site there you could have a look at............. then pick something that he likes, which suits his stomach and keeps him in good condition.

And share a link if you find one. I tried searching once and only came up with sights trying to scare you into various types of diets it didn't help at all.

I bought a few sample size bags today and tonight my pup DEVOURED Arcana’s Freshwater Fish dry food. He ate it straight — not mixed with his usual kibble as a form of slow transition — topped with boiled BSCB. I then read reviews of it online and everyone was talking about transitioning slowly because of the high percentage of protein in the recipe. Oh well, maybe he’ll get diarrhea tonight but seems just fine right now. Of course, since dog food is such a controversial topic, there were posts both in support of Arcana’s foods and posts claiming it is made in a questionable facility in Kentucky. Sigh, it shouldn’t be this hard to find a safe, nutritious, pet food...

That's where all the Omega3 lives.

Yep. I give them one of these cubes after their main meal. It helps keep their teeth clean.............. and you feel like like are giving your dog something good to eat.( omega 3 and high protein)
Not for everyone and its not cheap...... but a bag can last several months. I give my racing dog a sardine in tomato when she is racing ... it keeps her energy levels up and is easy to digest. (Like an athlete having a banana) We can't easily get hold of Arcana products..... but from what I remember of the review, it came out quite well and was something I was going to take a look at.

Where do you get these? Just any pet store? I don't recall having seen them.

We have a small, boutique, dog treat company here in Massachusetts that sells fish skins: 2 Dog Treats. My pup likes them, but prefers their chicken or beef jerky.

I get them from the tournaments I go to from the natural food stands.... haven't seen them in the local pet shops to be honest.... but some people get them online.

Oh. Interesting. I thought you meant the crispy, crunchy, delicious fish skins you get when you pan-fry a piece of salmon or fresh trout. Critters would have to fight me for that!

The other day, I was out walking. I happened to see two dogs walk up to a parking meter. I was just close enough to catch one dog saying to the other, "How do you like that, Pay Toilets!"

In case you want a break from dogs for a minute or two. A couple of pygmy goats to entertain you. Volume up so you can year to sound of their hooves on the wood floor.

this weekend, roommate was stressing while tracking a delivery that he said was a gift for the golden. um, ok...? well, it arrived yesterday and he waited for me to get home to give it to her.
a little background - the golden was a puppy when I bought my house. I brought her home to my sister's at 8wks, then to crash with my parents while I went back to work for the month of January while.still couch surfing, and she came with me to my new house at the end of Jan, 2015. for all that moving around, she had a little stuffed Pluto (think $5 Kohls cash register stuffies) that went with her. at about 14wks, she managed to eat a jalapeno seed off the kitchen floor and spent the next week basically shitting her body weight daily. one overnight, her beloved Pluto ended up in one of the puddles and couldn't be saved. I've been looking for another on and off ever since - she was destroying stuffies for a long time, so...
well, you guessed it - gift was a stuffed Pluto. I knew as soon as I saw the color peeking out of the package. ❤ he cuddled the stuffie and just waited. she climbed him like a tree and gently took Pluto from him. Pluto wasn't much farther than about 5ft from her the rest of the night and she gave LD stinkeye if he even looked like he was thinking about taking it.
I'll be stopping on my way home for a couple $5 Kohls stuffies to give LD something to cuddle.

At least someone likes their dog. All 3 of ours were getting ready to be sent to the pound yesterday when I got home from work. They had knocked down the gate separating them and were running amok when I got back. They pooped on my hardwood floors and since the piles were at various stages of drying, I had to get the mop and bucket out and scrub. They had been let out earlier in the day. I was so mad. Heathens.

OMG! I went home for lunch and there was shit all over the recliner and the couch. I spent my whole lunch break letting dogs out and cleaning up shit. I can't.

If they are, I don't know who. Especially since there are 3 of them. I really think Bear is doing it. It doesn't happen when he's not around. He's weird about where he poops and the yard is rather full now that the snow that was covering it melted. I planned to pick it up this weekend. I told Thing 1 she may have to just leave him in her room when she leaves. The twins don't poop in the house.

LD was crated for awhile at first, even though the golden had already earned free reign.

I'd rather he shit in a crate that can be wiped than the carpet or furniture.

so happy I washed all my bedding yesterday. the golden climbed up to snuggle while I hit snooze a few times, ultimately getting up a few minutes after I'd ordinarily be walking into the office (I'm WFH today). I got my coffee, my laptop, notebook, etc all set up on my bed and she decides to back her ass up against my laptop. I was lining up to take one of those pics like cat owners do - what? you don't need to work! - and she starts heaving and hurls a pile on my bed. doesn't seem to be any lingering effects, but I did make sure to just give her rice, chicken, and pumpkin for breakfast just now. I laid a towel down where my blanket is wet, she and LD are both sprawled out in here with me. I'll wash the bedding again later. all of it needs to be done again, the layers are wet down to the mattress liner (and this is why I still use it....)

Yuck. Dogs are gross. They only get away with stuff like that because they're so cute. Sorry.

it's all good. still better than the steaming pile of shit the other one left in the exact same spot last spring. I just can't strip the bed and wash everything until one or both of them find somewhere else to be. I'll put up a pic via mobile, but they have been up my ass all morning except when I ran out to the store. they are incredibly displeased that I'm home and ignoring them to be on my laptop.

I was so mad at the twins this weekend. I bought a pack of those liner socks and one of both of the twins got a hold of them the next day. They like to rip apart cardboard and had to go through the socks to get the the cardboard they were wrapped around. Good thing they were on clearance, so they were cheap. Damn dogs!
