Did you figure out what's going on with his paycheck? Or not yet? Or don't want to discuss?

Did you figure out what's going on with his paycheck? Or not yet? Or don't want to discuss? We did. It's accurate. They send him home when they are not busy which is standard practice. He was scheduled for 66 hours but only worked about half that. We're still better off than having him apply for UE. He'd get about the same amount but the hoops required to obtain your measly $275 are not worth it. It's not so much he's making $10/hr which is not great, it's the lack of hours. If he could get full time at $10/hr we would not be comfortable and be slightly in the red each month but we'd be able to meet all our obligations. If his hours keep dwindling we are going to start sinking. I got my top four bills that are to be paid no matter what (daycare, mortgage, cars). I can play games with the rest of them. My loan payment is only $185 a month and I already consolidated years ago which extended my payments out to 20 years. I'd rather not do IRB when I am closer to the finish line than I am away from it now. If deferral is an option I'll take that, most of my balance is subsidized so a very puny amount of interest would accumulate for however long I needed to defer. That's better than IRB over the long haul I feel. He's hitting the pavement today. Going to put out some applications to box stores in the meantime, same pay but he's likely to get better and more consistent hours. He's also looking into donating plasma.

I'm so glad it's not any of my dismal scenarios.
A friend from high school texted yesterday - she's got a new job. It's 7/10s, then off a week. She's been underemployed since August when she was forced out of her last job. So she's happy about it. I'm not sure about the shifts myself but hey, whatever works!

I don't think the subsidized stop accruing interest during a deferral for income related issues-at least I don't think mine did 23 years ago. They did stop when I went back to school. But check on it definitely.

NomoreDramaQ1015 have you thought some more about bankruptcy? This might be the time to do it with you husband's income so reduced.

I registered for the annual conference for my field yesterday and booked my flights. Cost was just over $900. Work will reimburse me, but since the conference isn't until late April, that does mean I probably shouldn't be putting out any applications for a bit, unless it's something else on campus. where I could just have the new department transfer money to the current department.

Yeah but it would cost more than we have to file and would take several months to complete. In that time period he could find another job. I can't use my credit during that time period either which given our meager savings would be a problem should something serious arise. As it stands right now I have about $30k in open credit I could tap. Do I want to? No, but it's there should a worst case scenario happen. So IDK. I am not sure we're better off either in the long or the short run going that route. We may not have a choice but for right now we still do. I can cover the bare minimum payments so that's what I'll do for the time being.

Got several more applications out. I found an odd one that he's totally qualified for. It's for front of house with a local cupcake shop. Is full time, it's the salary range we are shooting for and it's almost exactly the job he did previously. Bonus is it is not "corporate" which is something DH would like. I tacked on my dad's to his resume because I am wondering if part of the reason we aren't getting bites is, despite it being only a month, DH is "unemployed" and that looks odd in an economy where "there are more jobs that people". Plus then he has "front of house" experience. So we'll see. I am not going to get my hopes up but then somehow he managed to win the job at his previous company despite no sales or beef experience so it's worth a shot right?

He was scheduled for 33 hours a week but worked less than half 2 weeks in a row and didn't say anything until you asked why his Check was short? That seems very concerning to me.

I think I'd keep a calendar in the kitchen where he writes how many hours a day he works. If he doesn't keep track he won't know if he's shorted and this way you're not taken aback on payday either.

He was scheduled for 33 hours a week but worked less than half 2 weeks in a row and didn't say anything until you asked why his Check was short? That seems very concerning to me. I know when he is sent home. I haven't been tracking down exactly to the hour when he starts and when he gets off, I've had a lot other things on my mind. He hasn't been keeping as close track as he should either. Which makes him irresponsible but it is not some nefarious situation. I got enough to worry about without inventing boogy men. He's going to start writing down what time the computer says at clock in and clock out. We are also going to operate on the assumption that this will be his "normal" hours and be pleasantly surprised if he gets more. At the end of the day though it doesn't matter. If they send him home, they send him home, they are not obligated to let him complete his shift. We can't function long term on resturant hours. He's never going to get full time consistent hours that's just the way the industry goes. I am going to waste large amounts of time fighting the beast. He will keep the job but our #1 priority is finding full time employment somewhere. .. anywhere. I can work with $10-$11/hr if I have to so long as he is full time.
He is also pushing for his back pay regarding the 7% in tips. Since it's under the table we may never see it and it's not like he has recourse but he's trying.

Target pays pretty well for a box store. 2 of my kids work there and they are making $13 an hour.

Drama -Is he working under the table at the restaurant for the other guy? No. He gets a base pay of $10/hr. He was supposed to get 7% in sales (so like $1 a pizza approximately) during his shift too according to what was offered to him when he accepted the job. That has to be approved by both owners though and the one has not made a decision. If both partners do not agree then it can't happen. According to others that work there, this is common. They keep promising they owe him the 7% in back pay but since it's in cash if they decide NOT to do offer it there is really no recourse. It's not like when I was a server and my base pay was $2.75/hr and tips had to be included to get me up to minimum wage. And again I am not assigning a nefarious reason to this like he is hiding the cash and not telling me. DH can be a good actor but he's not THAT good an actor. I've heard Target pays well but also heard Target is a major dick, at least our store is. For all the gripes people have about Wal-mart apparently our local ones treat their staff pretty well.

If I was doing this, I am sure I would "forget" to track time in or time out on a regular basis. I was going to suggest he look for a phone app that uses GPS or something like that to track the info for you, but then I remembered I had a job once where my boss wanted to be sure we were at our desks and ready to work right at start time, so loggin in, was on your own time. Remembering to send an e-mail to himself on arrival and exit might be a good way to track it.

After my 30-45 minute commute I'm a zombie and have been going to bed with dd at 7pm. I told dh I feel like I have mono and he said he thinks this is just what 40 feels like.

I knew a lot of people that worked at Target in college. ZERO flexibility, if you were expected to work during class time you better show up or it's a point. A lot of people quit to work at Wal-mart who were willing to be a lot more flexible with schedules. They are also apparently good about trying to get you transferred to Wal-marts in the area where you go to school.

Drama, are there any Amazon warehouses around you? They are DESPERATE for workers here. The one my kiddo works at starts at $16/hour I believe and is super flexible around his class schedule.

I think Costco starts people out at $15/hr, if you happen to have one nearby. They are said to be really good to work for.

UPS is hiring around here too. Might be another option for him. Pays the same as Amazon I think.
