Interesting. All because of funding/defunding Planned Parenthood?

I was thinking along the same line as Value Buy. Maybe he's realized that the policies he's been fighting for don't align with what the Pope wants?

Meets the Pope. Resigns. Maybe the Pope isn't such a bad guy after all.

Ok, so if Boehner leaves, who is the obvious replacement? Things could get worse, Kids!

This is from the Slate.com article I linked a few posts up, so consider the source. It’s also unclear that 218 Republicans would be able to rally around a speaker more right-wing than Boehner in a spot speaker’s election. The candidate who’s most discussed as a Boehner replacement is current Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who’s hardly a Tea Partier. Since there isn’t much agency involved in the internally unpopular choices any GOP speaker has to make, McCarthy would have to run the House much as Boehner has: by taking the least bad options available to him. That may be fine with House conservatives, too: They may just want to lop off someone’s head, and it would work well for them to have another “establishment” figure in charge to scapegoat for their natural lack of leverage.

I just read that and was coming over to post a thread on it...Surprised he is giving up his seat in Congress too..[ mentioned in article I had to post]...Seems a win for the hard right members I am sorry to say...beyond seeming to be a muddled Congress..under Boehner, Congress was getting the job done and seemed to be going along as a give or take by both sides on the end..even on the threatened government closings...Personally I believe , unless one party or the other has majority in both houses plus executive..I am thinking that is how political doings are going to happen in the future as it does now...extreme differences and few ever crossing the aisle...even to the detriment of the country....becoming politics as usual....and the Obama type of happenings..extreme never agreeing on anything..even the color of the white house if brought up..is the wave of the future...[sigh} Personally, while he , Boehner, wasn't of my party, over all I believe he was as rational as one could be giving the extreme sides of his own party..[Tea Party members] So many who have their own agenda and the country can go to hell before they change their doings... america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/9/25/john-boehner-to-leave-congress.html

Ok, so if Boehner leaves, who is the obvious replacement? Things could get worse, Kids! Oh, indeed. This is a clear indication the move that's been afoot to defeat him finally has the votes to unseat him as speaker. However, given his stubborn nature- I am concerned that he may be leaving believing that he has the prefect RINO replacement. We need a conservative fighter. John Boehner has held the purse strings since 2010 and he has presided over the most profligate spending of any House (which is Constitutionally the ONLY branch that can introduce spending measures) in history- doing Obama's bidding and doubling the national debt.

hopefully he will pass a budget, first. That is the rumor going around right now. That is supposed to be the reason he is resigning too. Reaching across the aisle for Democratic support, which, of course is there. It is the nail in the coffin with fellow rightwingers. That and the Pope. Did you catch him behind the Pope yesterday? He knew what he was going to do today.

Seeing him behind the Pope, his body language was poor. He looked exhausted.

My DH thinks this is good. I'm not so sure about that but DH and I are often on the opposite sides of politics. We joke that most of the time our votes cancel each other out.

Some days, yes. Others, no. We do have a rule of sorts in our house - if you want to bring up a touchy topic, you can. If the other person doesn't engage, it gets dropped like a hot potato. You can bring it up again on a different day/time. And we try to respect each others' right to have a differing opinion than our own. Some days this works better than others though.

I would be upset if I lived in Boehner's district. They paid for the hiring process to fill the job for two years just last November. Now the person hired is quitting so the taxpayers will have to pay for a special election. Jerk.

Can't the Governor just appoint a replacement to fill out the term..didn't think a special election has to be held...

No. Article I Section 2 of US Constitution: When vacancies happen in the Representation from any State, the Executive Authority thereof shall issue Writs of Election to fill such Vacancies. www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/constitution_transcript.html

I have just finished a lot of back and forth on CNN discussing all the aspects of the resignation..possible the why and such. What I don't understand , being someone who is more interested in getting consensus and moving on rather then go to the barricades over some policy or doings .."fight to the death over "...As the leading conservative on this board..[ my feelings anyway] please explain how Boehner not going along with extremists..[ ok , my feelings of..extremist..possible not yours..] ideas for causing havoc..[shutting down government as one for example] and compromising and getting the best deal possible is the worst way in your and other conservatives minds... The big picture and prize would be the big chair..winning the executive branch...all other prizes are below that..especially since usually with a executive win at least one of the other two branches seem to fall into the hands of he winners of the executive..and I am not convinced a true Tea Party..conservative mood..will ever win the big tamala....Example....a win for the candiency by Donald....sounds good but in reality..his winning over the middle group...the woman...minorities...never happen, ever....so the big tamaly and one of the houses...if not both..lost..Compromise..moderates IMHO are the way electiions, nationally, are the way they are won..again..IMHO of course..

We're just getting another RINO. McCarthy is another liberal. Goldwater would be considered a liberal in today's Republican Party, the goalposts have moved so far in the last few decades. On another note, we were on a capital tour last year and Boehner walked right by a group I was with on his way to his office, he took the time to say hello to everyone and slowed for those taking pictures, was pretty cool being that close to the person third in line to the presidency. The aide that was giving us our tour said he hadn't seen someone that high level all summer and was really excited.

Goldwater was for small government, so if your point is that he would not be typical of the Republican party, then I agree. But he equally would not be typical of liberals today. An old political joke from the 60's. ------They said, '"vote for Goldwater and we will be at war in Vietnam within months of the election", I did and we were.
