Speaking of old Indian names, I wonder how many children or for that matter, adults, today realize how many towns, rivers, etc carry the name originally of the old Indian name for the same thing. I am amazed how many small towns, rivers , even valleys, etc carry the Indian name or a connotation of it, to this day. I bet many people do not even think anything about it. As a child, I never made the connection. It was just named whatever it was called. They made us rename our mountain "Squaw Peak" because it is offensive in Indian culture. We all still call it Squaw Peak. Speaking of children, and adults for that matter, how many of them could name one significant thing about McKinley. I bet 80% of Americans wouldn't even know he was assassinated. Yea, thanks for nothing Janet Napolitano.

Denali is the original name. From my seat, Denali was used in reference to the mountain more than Mt. McKinley. Healing a sore spot with first peoples is not wasted time. I didn't agree with Obama apologizing to Japan since they started the war. I can see the healing from doing that. I must have missed the one where he apologized to Japan for something, or was that a while back when he was on his world apology tour? As I recall, it was last week. I just caught a snip of it on the news.

Denali
I had to think for a moment to realize that it was still officially called Mt. McKinley. I haven't heard anyone call it that in years.
So, I'm the only one who had never heard of Denali, until yesterday?
Yes.

I just caught a snip of it on the news. The cable leaves a lot of questions open, including whether the U.S. was offering an apology and what sort of domestic and international rifts an apology could unveil. The United States has made it policy not to comment on leaked cables.
Update at 4:42 p.m. ET. White House Response:
White House spokesman Tommy Vietor says that while the administration does not comment on leaked cables, "there was never any plan for the president to apologize. The President's visit speaks for itself."

This wasn't a leaked cable unless the national news picked up the incorrect info. All I caught was Obama apologized to Japan.

I just knew I'd read about the telephone conversation between President Obama and Abe of Japan. You'd have to ask the poster who linked that to this thread.

There are several in use. <skuze my cat for posting before I was finished composing> The two main languages are Swahili and English. Denali isn't a word in Swahili and it isn't a word in English.

The ignorance and gullibility of some liberal and conservative Facebook users is comical for those who have even an ounce of common sense.

It is so amazing the power of the man. First off, he arranged to have a fake birth announcement inserted into newspapers at his birth and then he got them to change the name of a national park 28 years before he was elected president: In 1980, under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, Mount McKinley Park underwent a name change to become Denali National Park and Preserve, ... campdenali.com/live/page/denali-national-park-mount-mckinley Just totally impressive.

I'd bet DJ's avatar that the "Denali Power" image was created by a supporter of Pres. Obama, either as satire or in an attempt to embarrass anybody who passed it along.

I did her a favor, sent her a private Facebook message with a link to Dinali National Park and suggested she remove the post so she wouldn't appear ignorant to her other Facebook friends.

I do know she doesn't like to be embarrassed in public so I imagine she would delete it.

My SIL passes along bogus/untrue stuff on Facebook too. When I privately tell and show her where she is wrong, she replies it is not her job to verify facts and she is just passing it along to her 200+ Facebook friends who then pass it on to their 200+ Facebook friends who then pass it along....

incidentally, Boehner is all nutty about this, but McKinley was not all that great. i would rate him as average. he was an effective president, but he was also really into protective tariffs, which are not exactly popular today- and he was also very interventionist, which i find loathsome. in short, other than the fact that he is from Ohio, i can't think of any good reason why Boehner or any other Republican should defend him.

I'm not going to speculate regarding who might have come up with the meme since I have no way of gaining a clue as to who came up with it and I truly HATE IT when my "intellectual stock" plummets! I will say it seems ridiculous to me to claim a current sitting president changed the name of a mountain that's gone by that name long before we "murcans" set foot up there. I'm determined to figure out, before I die, why in the heck people refuse to simply do a modicum of research before shooting off their darned fingertips!
