I read about it this morning. Take that, Ohio.
I'm counting it as a win that it isn't being renamed "Mt. Caitlyn", and moving on.

Since the mountain is known as Mt. Denali to the locals, and has been since before the first name-change (there has been more than one), I don't see any problem with acknowledging that. It sure doesn't stand out as one of the really important decisions of all time - at least, not to me.

I think that the Ohio delegation should work to change the name of an Ohio mountain to McKinley. I would recommend they change Mt. Miserable to Mt McKinley. One reason to support this change is that the mountain in Ohio is more representative of the accomplishments of President McKinley. It is 1,486 ft tall, the #51698 tallest in the United States . The mountain in Alaska is 20,322 ft tall, the tallest in the United States.

Speaking of old Indian names, I wonder how many children or for that matter, adults, today realize how many towns, rivers, etc carry the name originally of the old Indian name for the same thing. I am amazed how many small towns, rivers , even valleys, etc carry the Indian name or a connotation of it, to this day. I bet many people do not even think anything about it. As a child, I never made the connection. It was just named whatever it was called.

Denali is the original name. From my seat, Denali was used in reference to the mountain more than Mt. McKinley.
Healing a sore spot with first peoples is not wasted time.
I didn't agree with Obama apologizing to Japan since they started the war. I can see the healing from doing that.

I must have missed the one where he apologized to Japan for something, or was that a while back when he was on his world apology tour?

Obama is not renaming anything- it was always Denali. Ohio folks are angry- so considering state's rights Ohio should be able to rename a peak in Alaska

They should name the Millennium Force roller coaster at Cedar Point "McKinley Madness." That's pretty damn tall.

I'm just glad that all of the country's other problems must have been solved already so he could tackle pressing issues such as this one "Changing the name has often been a bipartisan legislative priority among Alaska’s congressional delegation to rename the mountain. Lisa Murkowski (R), the state’s senior senator and chairwoman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, which is responsible for the matter, has sponsored legislation in every session of Congress to do so since taking her seat."

It must be pressing to Alaskans

We all still call it Squaw Peak. Speaking of children, and adults for that matter, how many of them could name one significant thing about McKinley. I bet 80% of Americans wouldn't even know he was assassinated.

I am sure somewhere in Ohio, they have to have a gigantic garbage landfill somewhere with a little height. That would be appropiate for any politician's legacy. Unless they trucked all their garbage to Kentucky or Indiana........

Illinois was the name of the tribe living in the area when the French explorers made it here. Chicago is based off an Indian word for skunk. Many of the area routes (highway routes) were old Indian trails the settlers continued to use.

I lived in Merrillville growing up (south of Gary) and we had an old Indian village grounds smack dab in the middle of the town. The "original rt 30" followed the Potowatami (sp) trail through town. South, a few miles, in Hebron Indiana there is a monument stone showing the spot where they were rounded up, and sent to, I think, Oklahoma after the white man moved in. A very few were allowed to stay here, but most were forced to move. The Kankakee river is a loose translation of the Indian name for the river.

It's Pottawattamie. That's the name of the county I live in in Iowa. There are a lot of places that have Indian related names around here.

Denali
I had to think for a moment to realize that it was still officially called Mt. McKinley. I haven't heard anyone call it that in years.
So, I'm the only one who had never heard of Denali, until yesterday?

Yeaaa, I know i am so easily confused, on one hand Obama tells us all the ice is going to be gone, how much has already disappeared, Then I read news stories of how Ice breakers had to break up 800 miles of ice, so tankers could deliver fuel to Nome because of early fall sea ice, Orrr, the expedition to study the loss of ice getting stuck in Hudson Bay in the summer BECAUSE of ice, Now there is an "inconvenient truth". Since we are big now on Indian names and saying, here is one that fits, Obama speaks with forked tongue!

OMG do we need to do this again? Glaciers are fresh water. They melt at greater rates they change the salinity of the ocean water... Salt water freezes at lower temps. So now, due to changed salinity the ocean freezes at higher temps increasing surface ice..
Doesn't change the underlying issue... Not mutually exclusive...
