But the question is, are reality shows real...of course not. They are all cheesy and scripted. But we play along.

American Ninja Warrior, Shark Tank, any of the Food/Cooking challenges, Amazing Race, Running Wild with Bear Grylls, etc - aren't "cheesy and scripted". Nor is America's got Talent.
Shows like Survivor are scripted to some degree. "Wife Swap" and "Celebrity Wife Swap" also.
Big Brother is even lower on the scale of "reality".
There is (and was) a lot of crap on TV that classifies itself as "reality" - "Sister Wives", Honey Boo Boo", "18 Kids and Counting", Kate + 8", etc - pure garbage.
It's just a bunch of people putting their personal lives on display for the world to view (and judge).

The kids and I watch Shark Tank.
We watched Pawn Stars when it was on Netflix streaming. Got hooked while in the hospital after giving birth to DD2.
Ice Road Truckers was my favorite. People ask "If you got stranded on a desert island and could bring two people?" For me it would be the two original main dudes from IRT.
When I had surgery, Swamp People was on whenever they woke me up. I still think that's not very real.

I like America's Got Talent and the Alaskan survival shows (Alaskan Bush People, Life Below Zero, the one about Azt Lee and his clan). I absolutely love my creature comforts, but I have always wanted to try living completely off of the grid. I grew up off the grid. Believe me, it's highly overrated. Could you elaborate? (Nevermind if it's too personal)

Does anyone remember the show Bug Juice from the 90's? It was middle school kids at summer camp. I was completely obsessed because I desperately wanted to go to camp but couldn't. I vaguely remember that one, I watched Salute Your Shorts

DID YOU SEE WHAT HONORA DID? OH MY! OMG! What a flake! I thought the guys were amazingly calm, lol. It seemed a bit staged when she picked up the knife and then one of the guys said "Oh don't you go throw that in the river". I mean, why would they assume she was running to do that? They should have abandoned her in the middle of the night and left her to fend for herself!

I don't know. People really are that crazy. I just thought that statement was a bit too convenient. I mean, I know a portion of it is staged or trumped up for the camera.

No. It's on the DVR. Don't spoil it! I won't but it was hilarious! You are the only other person I know who watches it. But others must because it is already scheduled for another season. I watched it. You were right! It was hilarious!

I grew up off the grid. Believe me, it's highly overrated. Could you elaborate? (Nevermind if it's too personal) When I was 5 or 6 my dad decided that he was tired of having neighbors and having to follow the rules necessary to live in harmony with said neighbors. He decided homesteading was a good idea so my parents bought a piece of land in the middle of nowhere. The trail wasn't developed enough to drive to the homestead site so an ATV or walking was necessary to get in and out. And once you got to the main road it was a number of miles to a tiny town and a couple of hours to a town that had an actual grocery store. We lived in an old Army tent while my parents cleared the land with a chainsaw and burned the stumps where the house would sit. The majority of the trees that were felled were used to build the house and the rest were chopped up for firewood. The logs for the house were all hand notched, so we all got very familiar with using a hammer and chisel. There was never any running water, electricity or phone service even after the house was built. We had to haul water in on the ATV's in 5 gallon jugs. Haul laundry out to a laundromat to get clean clothes and hope when you were hauling the clean clothes back to the house in garbage bags that one didn't fall out and burst open, soiling the clothes you'd just spent all day cleaning. We had wood heat and a propane cooking stove and lights. We had to heat hot water on one of the stoves for bathing and washing dishes. The kids were home schooled, which meant that we didn't actually have to walk uphill both ways in a snowstorm to get to school. For food we had a garden and also raised rabbits, chicken, turkeys, ducks, etc. Until we realized that we were basically providing a buffet for the wildlife, both small and very large. Everyone seems to think it sounds so romantic and fun. Trust me, when you have to use an outhouse in the dead of winter or take a gun with you in the summer in case there's a bear, it's not so romantic. And there's bugs. Lots and lots of bugs.

I could never hate people so much that I'd rather live in the woods.

msventoux, you may be the only one on this board to truly be prepared for a Zombiecalyse but you are also right in that this does not sound apealing at all. A long time ago when I was still young and silly, I dreamed of one day buying a house with lots of woods, land etc. Fortunately I discovered that I am a city girl at heart, who just needs to be able to get to nature fast, before I ever acted on it. Phew, dodged that bullet.

I could never hate people so much that I'd rather live in the woods. I can't tell if I think this is because you lack imagination or because you're fortunate enough to have never been exposed to certain people.

Thank you for sharing. I don't think I could live off-grid like that completely. I like my country living (isolated enough to wander around naked in the yard if I so choose) but it has indoor plumbing and electricity. Maybe if I had solar panels to generate electricity, to run the stove and well-pump and whatever else.
