Not a military facility, two military recruitment centers, did a drive by shooting at one and walked into the other, four dead marines, apparently. And the guy lived around the area, but had a middle eastern name, so I'm thinking it was a terrorist act, although I don't think there has been an official statement.
Very near to me.

But 4 dead marines and they weren't allowed to carry.
WTF?
So sick of not being able to defend against this sort of BS.

are we going to blame it on guns or Muslims? or is it too early to tell? Grant you that it is to early but as one who has just said how most of this terrorist threat per our government is mostly bogus...I'll go with that old proverb..." if it walks and talks like a duck most likely there is a good chance it is one".....and just because ONLY four innocents..Marines or not..were killed , not hundreds or more..it sure looks like one of those terrorist things you are claiming is mostly bogus government blatherings...and is a attack on our country.... Could "home land security " prevented it..? Who knows but I guarantee they would at least have a shot at it versus no such organization being in place.... Investigation of may show this perp had mouthed off to others..enough so in future possible similar just might be picked up by those who over heard and report at least to proper folks to take it from there..As I have suggested.." It isn't Kansas anymore Dorothy " and the world is not the same as it was in our fathers and grand folks day..you all better believe it...

As far as I'm concerned, any attack of this type is a terrorist attack. I'm sure everyone involved was pretty darned terrified! We don't know the motives behind it at this time. I could be the perp is affiliated with a terrorist organization. It could be he's just off his rocker. I could be he woke up with a boil on his heinie and blamed the governement; specifically, the military. Right now, we do not know.

Just because one is in the military doesn't mean all are armed to the teeth...Military is very specific when and where weapons are to be available...usually locked up when not issued..even in training units..always locked and unlocked only when needed for training or cleaning..drill...Armed folks are like civilien side..MP's on duty...weapons and ammunition usually separate...recruiting station weapons not needed... Possible some thought might be given to having small arms in such stations because of this incident and other attacks on military offices but then the question..who gets armed...are weapons locked up in safes when offices are closed..are arms carried at all times..{ have a hard time picturing a recruiting sgt in dress blues recruiting young men and woman overtly armed actually } but then again...and still no guarantee that would be a guarantee of stopping such incidents...out of the blue..surprise in the hands of the perp.. +

This did happen so it wasn't prevented. If he talked about it and someone overheard something, that did no good. How many people died in the last week due to complications of being fat? A lot more then 4.

And a (singular, one) pistol in it's holster on a member of the Military isn't exactly what I'd call "overtly armed".

Why should a military recruitment center be armed?
Of course some 2nd amendment show offs carry semi-automatic weapons into fast food places. Don't worry, your NRA owns too many politicians to take your macho toys away.

If being armed at all times means one or more of them accidently or intentionally blow away a small child or spouse, is that acceptable risk to protect you from seeing another story like this?
(Yes, I know this is harsh. But Damn, why do people get all crazy when guns, domestic terrorism, or Arabic sounding names surface? )

The amazing thing about life and experiences is, two different people can read the same words and come up with two totally different conclusion based on their life view.
From a comment to an article similar to the OP-
His year book quote sums it up.. "My name causes national security alerts. What does yours do?" Although he was a naturalized American citizen, it shows that his mindset was already taking place in High School, and he was feeling that he did not belong. In no way does this give him the right to do what he did. Yes
I read the national security alert phrase and felt it pre-programmed him to be a terrorist. Because so many terrified Americans were worried he'd become one, it became so. (If everyone is telling you, you are an Islamic terrorist waiting to happen, should it be that surprising when that kind of mis-guided talk bears fruit?)
news.yahoo.com/us-military-shooter-average-chattanooga-family-235448506.html
Chattanooga (United States) (AFP) - A 24-year-old Kuwaiti-born man who gunned down four Marines in a deadly rampage in Tennessee was "an all-American kid" from an "average" family, shocked friends and acquaintances said.
Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, who allegedly opened fire at two US military facilities in Chattanooga before being killed in a shootout with police, apparently wrote in a blog post this week that life is "short and bitter."
But hours after his killing spree on Thursday, authorities were still piecing together a portrait of the former high school wrestler with a degree in engineering to explain why he may have turned into a cold-blooded killer.
The FBI raided Abdulazeez's home in a leafy Chattanooga suburb and vowed to use every means possible to "determine the cause or the reason why he carried out this attack."
Facebook page which appeared to belong to his mother -- and which AFP could not independently verify -- showed a cheerful photo of Abdulazeez smiling at his graduation as he hugs an elderly woman while draped in flowers and a Palestinian keffiyeh.
Another photo apparently shows him posing with his diploma in front of the US and Tennessee flags, while a third shows a cake with the words "Congratulations Mohammod Class of 2012."
His mother is from Kuwait and his father is from the West Bank, according to the Facebook page. (Connected to Palestine, with a first name of Mohammmod and a name that causes national security alerts. I'm going to be thankful more folks don't crack and cave into the negative expectations of some people. )

.. had a middle eastern name, so I'm thinking it was a terrorist act, ... So is it the name of the shooter that makes it a terrorist act? No, actually let me retract that statement. I typed that without thinking. They've since then said that this was a kid that was born in Kuwait but moved to the US early on, went to public school near Chattanooga, attended the UT Chattanooga school, got an electrical engineering degree, his dad worked for Chattanooga government, he had a good paying job, etc etc. At least at this point there isn't any evidence that he ever expressed any anti-US/pro-terrorist sentiments at all, no blogs or facebook rants, no neighbors or fellow students or employees have come forward and said that he made any comments that might have indicated he was becoming a radical terrorist. The head of a local Islamic group said he gave no indication from his interactions with people at his mosque or through his online blog that he had any kind of radical thoughts - he thought possibly the guy was having some mental health issues. He had been arrested for a DUI last August and the guy from the mosque thought that might have been a symptom of a deteriorating mental condition that culminated in him becoming violent, like the Colorado movie theater shooter. They've searched this guy's home and they're talking to two women he lived with, supposedly there will be a news conference sometime today, but this is looking more like another guy with MI issues who snapped. Shame on me for jumping to earlier conclusions.

I made this statement too and it's also not exactly right either (dang it!) - earlier reports said these were two different military recruitment centers, but actually only one was. It was in a strip mall, in among other shops - that's where he did the drive by shooting.
The second place was some kind of surplus inventory storage facility, one building set a little off the main road, which is a busy highway through a commercial/industrial area. If I remember right, it's one building surrounding by a fence, literally right in the middle of park that runs along the TN river, adjacent to a community college, across the street from some stores and a Coke bottling plant - the talking heads were saying these were 'soft' targets, almost no security, so very easy for either terrorists or deranged people to get inside and do a lot of damage.
Given this attack, regardless of whether this guy was a terrorist or not, the military should reconsider having all those store front recruiting places. In this day and age with almost everyone having access to computers, I would think having people who would go out to talk at high schools and colleges to encourage recruitment, and then have people log into a website for an online discussion with a recruiter would be safer for the military and also more cost effective for tax payers.

As a previous military personnel, I have to say it is ok to be terrified. I think it is ok for them to realize they were under attack, unarmed, and unable to defend themselves. They might have been Marines, but under these circumstances, it would be understandable to be terrified when facing death. And someone earlier stated both sites were recruiting centers. This is incorrect. The site where they died, was a training center. I am sure we have all passed by such a National Guard type facility in almost any state in the country. Not exactly a fortified position. Not much different than a company warehouse site. A gate at the entrance possibly with a chain link fence around the perimeter, with the gate being opened during normal hours.

Not on any terrorist watch list, but supposedly went back to the old country in the ME for maybe two years?
WOW. And the father was under investigation for sending money to a terrorist organization a few years ago? Granted no charges resulted from investigation, but if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck........

Rumor only... But 4 dead marines and they weren't allowed to carry. WTF? So sick of not being able to defend against this sort of BS. There's a long standing reason behind this. The military is civilian controlled. In addition, recruitment centers are supposed to be inviting places, where someone can feel comfortable coming in and talking about a career in the military. The military is only supposed to armed on U.S. soil in times of insurrection and great crises. Domestically, we first turn to local and state police and failing that, to the national guard.

Shortly after the attack where 9 people were killed at the church, I saw a number of opinion pieces that said domestic, home grown hate groups were far more of a threat than Islamic terrorism.
Today, we know that Islamic extremism is still very much a threat.

Screw terrorism or murder. I call it an act of war against the U.S. Why? Why not just call it murder? What is the benefit of calling it an act of war? And who does that benefit go to? We have a militarized Islamic group who professes hatred to the U.S. and for what it stands and has said they will destroy us. That's good enough for me to say it is an act of war. In the brave new world, if no one has bothered to notice, with the internet, boundaries of a country are irrelevant. Computers, money and a will to act on your "ideals" is all it takes.

So according to you, white twenty some years old people that are mentally u balanced and have a grudge against none whites have declared war against all non whites. I could call that global racial terrorism!
We cannot just define/name things so they can fit our mood. What would have been if the shooter would've been a born and raised proud white American?
