Not only was it a bad joke, it was a stupid erroneous one also. Can't win today. Although the poutine was aimed at a previous poster. Small confort there. What are you talking about? The poutine wasn't aimed at anybody I meant your poutine joke. As in, the US would use your possession of poutine as a reason to go to war. If that wasn't what you meant, I'm at a loss then.

Oil companies have money. California does not. But there is a federal budget where we allocate billions/trillions to fight wars against enemies that don't exist or help bring water to places arround the world that we never heard of and don't have the money to take care of the needs of the people living in our yard! That's a new kind of F"" up! Wait till you see how much it costs to destroy Canada to get the poutine !

Bingo. For a long time voters in the northern part of the state were at odds with voters in the southern part of the state. Those in the north have enough water, more than enough if we weren't sending it south. Those in the south don't. I don't particularly relish the idea of paying extra taxes so people in LA can get more water. They probably shouldn't have built a city of millions of people in a giant fucking desert with no rain or ground water. They sure as fuck shouldn't be farming there. I remember hearing, several years ago, that there was a push to divide California into 3 different states - Southern, Middle, and Northern. The argument being that the three different areas are so completely different they really ought to be three different states. Has there been any movement on this? Could this water crisis be the push that makes the northern end separate itself from the rest of the state?

I think I said that a page or two back. Water in California is not priced relative to it's scarcity.

I think I said that a page or two back. Water in California is not priced relative to it's scarcity. that's a gross oversimplication, but generally true. private citizens pay between 200x and 1000x as much as agricultural interests for water.

there are a lot of solutions. but let's be clear. NASA did not say we would run out of water in a year. mmkay? "Basically, this was headline writers garbling a report that suggested California only had a year's worth of water in storage. So yes, if not one drop of precipitation fell in California, the state would run out of water next year. But while California's weather is currently abnormally dry, it's not the Sahara. It will get more rain and snow, and it will not run out of water in a year -- though, of course, that doesn't mean it doesn't have a serious problem that needs to be addressed."

Are Californians trying to do anything to keep more rainfall there? Are they building more ponds or channeling the rainwater runoff to place that will hold it? I know swales are a good way to hold water in the Earth and they are cheap to build. I think lack of water can be a vicious circle as it changes the topography and that changes rain patterns.
How is California dealing with this other then rationing?

How is California dealing with this other then rationing? lots of people are installing "runoff tanks" for irrigation. but that won't help the urban areas much, and California is mostly urban. the real problem is the SNOWPACK. when we have a snowpack, we don't need to rely on reservoirs as much. we have, basically, none. edit: CA agriculture exists on a complex system of "water rights". there are "senior rights" and "junior rights". the "junior rights" are basically worthless at this point. if you have a junior right, you are basically drilling right now. and the water table is falling and falling because of it. edit2: i think hickle has blocked me for reasons i don't understand, so someone who thinks he might like this information is welcome to copy this to their own post and claim it as their own.
