This past Saturday, the minister in our church gave a sermon on pride (i.e. arrogance) and vanity. At one point he reminded us that these are qualities we often fail to recognize in ourselves, and he suggested it may be helpful to solicit candid feedback from people we interact with from time to time. My interaction on NMSNM is something of an exceptional case since I mostly frequent the politics board where I tend to present and defend (often unpopular) opinions boldly, but the question is still relevant: Excepting discussions on sexuality-related topics such as homosexuality, abortion, sexual abuse, etc., do I often come across as arrogant in your personal opinion?
The set of excluded topics represents < 2% of my total contributions to the board, hence there should still be more than enough material left to make an assessment. Even if you only see my posts from time to time, I'm especially interested. Do my posts often strike you as arrogant, vain, condescending, self-aggrandizing? Do any specific examples stand out in your mind? I've asked for honest opinions, hence you're welcome to call me anything up to and including a selfish jerk in this thread. Please refrain from attacking my beliefs or my intellect, however. That's not the purpose of this thread. If anyone else is interested in getting a candid assessment of whether or not they're perceived as arrogant, post a request in this thread and be warned that people may tell you things you really didn't expect to hear.
Thanks for any and all honest feedback. I'll be back later this afternoon to check the damage.

Why would this be an exception? It's part of your posting history.
And yes, you do come across as arrogant.

When folks answer Virgil I'm pretty sure you will be able to tell which ones are your "friends" and which ones you most often disagree with. I'm saying yes to being arrogant as well.
You're responses on the Complaints thread.

I don't post in any of the heated debate threads so all I have to base my assessment on is EE. I don't see you as arrogant. A little quirky maybe but not arrogant.

I don't know if I would say arrogant. Self sure, confident in your beliefs, ready to respond to people about why their position is wrong and your is right are all ways that I would describe you, but this is a message board. You kind of need to be those things when posting in an online community. I will say that you come across with all of those attributes more than almost all other members, but I still wouldn't call it arrogance. I do get a sense of humbleness in your posts, although maybe I am just projecting my own incredible humbleness into your posts. Hard to tell. I guess in the end, I would say that yes, you are an arrogant bastard (just joking *winky, winky*).

And not sure if I am allowed to post this on here (I am sure that Virgil would not want this thread to turn into a who's/who on the arrogant YM list), but Windy is someone who comes across as arrogant.

I think everyone, myself included, on PB is arrogant. Some more often than others but arrogant none the less.

I don't see you as arrogant. I see you as passionate. You stand up for what you believe in and you come to the debate with well thought out opinions. I'm guessing the only ones who are going to see you as arrogant are those who are your polar opposites in regards to politics, social issues, etc.; and who, if they are being honest, possess those same qualities they see as arrogance in you. Of course they aren't arrogant - just passionate! I don't know anybody who doesn't think they are "right". Of course a person thinks they are right if they are expressing their opinion. I don't know of very many people who have an opinion they think is wrong.

Why do that? Why do you have to disqualify the answers of anyone that does see him as arrogant?

I'm not. I'm simply saying people with opposite opinions often think of one another as arrogant. It goes both ways. Maybe Virgil sees those who don't agree with him as arrogant. Unfortunately, I'm not important enough to "disqualify" anything. I just get to state my opinion like everyone else.

Maybe, but that wasn't the question. He seems to be sincerely checking into it with the goal of self improvement. Whether or not others are arrogant is irrelevant to that question.

It's not irrelevant to me. If it is to you and you are, somehow, a thread monitor, please delete my posts if you wish. Otherwise, I have no intention of continuing along this line when you are obviously in one of your argumentative, nit-picky moods.

Addressing, the OP, I wouldn't go so far as to call you arrogant, but on more than a few occasions, you have displayed an air of arrogance in your opinions - often immediately dismissing someone else's opinion as wrong in your eyes, simply because it disagrees with yours.
While your opinion may be more well-researched or right in many cases, it's the way you sometimes present it - like you're "talking down" to someone - not really arrogance per se, but more an air of "superiority".
Just my 2¢ .....

Just my 2¢ ..... You are a man of many parts. And while I think SL nailed it - I don't think a truly arrogant person would take the whole snow leopard thing with such good humor.

I would also say that Virgil comes across more self assured in his posts and beliefs and has strong convictions. I don't find strong convictions arrogant even if they go against what I believe and feel strongly about. I also don't read P&M very much but I find Virgil mostly fun, silly, corny, clever, sweet, generous, wordy, intelligent, moral, and honorable far more than ever reading him as arrogant - even when he is at his worst.

My vote is "no". But then again, since I think I am arrogant in a lot of ways - I am not sure my opinion will worth that much

Thinking your right isn't what makes it arrogant, it's the contempt for other people and/or their opinions/beliefs.
