Do you buy or do you make? Do you have more than one bottle in your fridge right now? Do you shop around for sales, or buy whatsever on sale? Are you picky about brands? Do you have a favorite salad dressing recipe?
This week, I've been mixing my own from sugar-free vinegar and Ponzu sauce .... because I was looking for something tangy and refreshing, but reasonable in calories, fat, and sugar content.
Do you use different salad dressings for different salads?

We mostly buy, but that's because it is ranch. I grew up knowing how to make "thousand island." You mix mayonnaise, ketchup, and pickle relish plus add garlic salt to taste. Easy-peasy. It might not match more discriminating taste buds, but that's how my mother made it.
We buy a very specific refrigerated ranch dressing. Probably six or seven years ago I liberated a pad of No Expiration Date $1 off coupons for this brand. I use the more recent ones that expire as much as possible, but I will be eating this ranch dressing (Naturally Fresh) for as long as I live.

I discovered Cardini Jalapeno Caesar dressing at The Fresh Market. DH doesn't care for it, but I love it! and it really has a kick to it.

I buy our salad dressings and we aren't stuck on brands, I can buy any brand of ranch, caesar, french, poppy seed or creamy cucumber. So I go with the sales on those. I really love my specialty olive oils and balsamic vinegars, but I'm the only one that does. Works for me cause they aren't cheap. Different salads have different dressings, like spinach salad is poppy seed, Caesar salad is Caesar dressing, green salads can have whichever dressing you prefer.

I haven't made any for a while, but I should try again... I love Caesar dressing, and am very picky about brands for ranch and bleu cheese after trying some I really didn't like. Latest favorite is Ken's Raspberry Walnut Vinaigrette. I did not like vinaigrette for a long time, but had lunch at my parent's house and this is what they had. It won me over. I'd love to learn how to make my own version to get rid of the "extras" I don't want (like high fructose corn syrup). ETA: I normally wait for sales. This brand has coupons fairly often, and goes on sale here every couple months, so sometimes I can buy it for around $1.

Do you buy or do you make? I do both, but make it only a couple times a year Do you have more than one bottle in your fridge right now? No, I have 1/2 a bottle of no fat Italian right now. I'll be 'restocking' soon. I do this in preparation for my first Farm Box (next week) which will cause me to begin to eat salads everyday. Do you shop around for sales, or buy whatsever on sale? I watch for sales but I have no 'brand loyalty'. Most of the brand names have low or no fat Weight Watcher friendly dressings. Despite the myriad of 'lower calorie or no fat' dressings there's usually only one or two flavors per brand name that are lowest in WW points. Are you picky about brands? No. Any 1 or 2 point dressing (usually 15 to 50 calories per 2 tablespoons) will do the trick. Do you have a favorite salad dressing recipe? No. I've only recently started playing around with making vinegrettes I have rice, apple cider, red wine vinegars. I can't really recommend any dressing recipes. I'll happily eat a salad without dressing (especially if it has beets or is made with some peppery Rocket!)
I'm looking forward to seeing the responses you get

This week, I've been mixing my own from sugar-free vinegar and Ponzu sauce .... because I was looking for something tangy and refreshing, but reasonable in calories, fat, and sugar content. Do you use different salad dressings for different salads? 1. Both. 2. Yes. 3. Yes & No - if it need it I buy it - if it's on sale, I'll probably buy 2. 4. Somewhat picky about brands. Some Ranch Dressings are better than others. 5. My favorite is Ranch - not only for salads, but to use as a dip for raw veggies (baby carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, celery, etc.
My second-favorite is a good Italian dressing - it's vinegary but has a nice meld of spices and seasonings.
French dressing occasionally - followed lastly by Thousand Island - which is a bit bland. I like my dressings to have some "bite" to them.
I've made a version of "Italian" and it's turned out very well. After checking, I have three in my fridge right now - Ranch, Italian and Caesar.

Do you buy or do you make? I've done both but lately just buy.
Do you have more than one bottle in your fridge right now? Yes, many. We entertain now and then and use some for marinades.
Do you shop around for sales, or buy whatsever on sale? We prefer sales of our favorites which Publix does pretty often. BOGO.
Are you picky about brands? Yes. We love Ken's for most dressings and for our Ranch we prefer Publix brand and then Marie's. We also love Zesty Italian dressing for marinating.
Do you have a favorite salad dressing recipe? No.
Do you use different salad dressings for different salads? Yes.
Ranch for garden salad and also as dips and chicken wings. Italian for an Italian blend type salad or for tomato/fresh Basil and Mozzerella salad or a pasta and veggie salad. Thousand Island for garden salads, Chef, and Cobb salads. French or Catalina depending on mood for the above. Blue Cheese for a Wedge salad with tomatoes, bacon, Gorgonzola cheese and we also use it for dips and chicken wings. Caesar for Caesar salads. Vinaigrette for Greek salads mostly. Warm bacon dressing for Spinach salads.

I have a BUNCH of dressings in the fridge: Kens Lite Italian Kens Lite Ceasar Those are the ones I frequently use on my everyday type salads. Kens Asian - used instead oif a BUNCH of stuff for stir frys Ranch, usually light - used as a dip for veggies or w/salsa for taco salad
I do sometimes mix my own olive oil & balsamic vinegar.
As you can see I mostly use Ken's but Kraft Italian is also fine. I will buy cheap italian for marinating meat and/or veggies. Ken's seems to go on sale several times/year and the run a $1 coupon about 2x/year.
I could probaly keep the sodium content lower if I regularly mixed my own but then the calories would be higher than the Lite versions I use and since I use cannola oil or olive oil buying on sale w/a coupon is cheaper.

I buy it usually. Ranch and thousand island and Italian are my staples. However, I tried a mustard vinaigrette that was yummy so I might try to make that.

A friend of mine suggested I make salad dressing with low fat cottage cheese and salsa ... but it seems to me that would just end up being spicy, tomato-y cottage cheese ... any other suggestions about what to add to that concoction to make it more salad dressing-y? (Yes, I realize I've made up several new words in that post!)

You might try mixing the salsa with some low-fat sour cream, ❤ mollymouser ❤ - it seems to me that cottage cheese would be too "lumpy" a dressing.

If you run cottage cheese thru the food processor, it turns into a thin sour cream type mixture. I buy some to keep on hand for hubby. Ranch, basic Italian, and French. I did find a lime/Italian vinegrette that makes an incredible chicken marinade. And for the most part, I buy what is on sale. I found a recipe for the Olive Garden's Italian dressing & I always have a giant mason jar of it in the fridge. www.announcingit.com/invitations-blog/copycat-olive-garden-salad-dressing-recipe/2/during the summer, when I have a lot of fresh herbs, I also make a homemade green goddess dressing that is amazing. www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/green_goddess_dressing/Since I eat more salads than anyone else in the house, I'm always trying out new vinaigrette recipes.

Oh apple, I'm with you! The Ken's rasberry vinaigrette is really great. I don't usually like vinaigrette either. I've liked every Ken's steakhouse dressing I've tried. I think it's smart to come up with a good homemade dressing if you can, dressing is really expensive for what it is. I tried using just plain salsa for dressing because it is so low in calories, but it was really too spicy for that and my stomach rebelled.

I'm another Ken's Steakhouse fan. I LOVE Kens Ceasar to use as a marinade for chicken and steak! As far as using on an actual salad most of the time I just use oil and vinegar but we do have a few bottles of different kinds in the fridge. If we need it and it isn't on sale I do still buy it, but whenever Ken's puts out their coupons and it goes on sale I buy as many as I have coupons for.

Another fan of Ken's here. Tried it when it was free and liked it so much that I sometimes pay almost full price . DH likes the dressings from Trader Joes, so we have a few bottles of those always.

I make my own cesear's dressing and use it for just about everything. No sugar in it, it has lemon juice, anchovy paste, garlic, dried mustard, Worcestershire sauce, olive oil and an egg. A batch is good for about a week.
If I get a salad out, it usually has ranch on it. There is a restaurant in Lexington that makes their ranch with dill. I'd kill for that recipe.

1. have made my own, usually buy 2. yes 3. sale, unless I am completely out and craving a favorite 4. yes - vinaigrette from the Mom and Pop Italian place/lite Caesar from Ken's - both are local restaurants whose dressings are mass produced for grocery sale 5. nah, if I make my own it's from whatever's kicking around
I will use either favorite dressing on pretty much anything. if I use Cajun seasoning on whatever protein I've grilled to top the salad, I'll use Caesar.

I usually make my own, but always have a few bottles in the fridge. Try putting a little squirt of brown mustard in your vinegrette. Delicious!

Ken's is great! I like homemade dressings, but never have a chance/forget/don't have time to make them myself. I prefer Marzetti blue cheese dressing (on sale with a coupon!!) on salads, and Kraft ranch and Wishbone buffalo ranch as dippers. DH bought Italian for a smoker recipe last month, used a bit and there it sits. Our dressing selection grows due to entertaining. We've got a bottle of 1,000 Island leftover from IDK what party....

sour cream!!?!?!? ewwwwww.... ::::: shudders and runs away :::::: Try substituting plain greek yogurt for the sour cream. I find it works very well (and now I have to try making a yogurt and salsa salad dressing...).

Another "make my own" person here. I have MCS and there are waaaaaaaaay too many food chemicals in bottled dressings (and way too many more "hidden" behind/inside of innocuous-sounding ingredients on the label).
A quick interwebz search will yield you enough recipes for any type or style of dressing that you desire - enough to make your head spin!
But as always - YMMV.

Molly I would not use generally cottage cheese in salad dressing. If you want a creamy type dressing try using low or fat free yogurt.
I do drain & processor/blend cottage cheese a ricotta substitute. MUCH cheaper & lower i fat since I buy 1% cottage cheese.

I was 'inspired' to buy some dressings in preparation of the arrival of my first CSA Farm Box later this week (which will be chock full of salad-y kinds of veggies!). I purchased some Annie's Lite Poppyseed Dressing (good with baby spinach!) and Annie's Lite Honey Mustard dressing (great on salads or as a marinade for Tofu/chicken).
