Yep, "grazed" one while driving to the train station this morning. It jumped out of the darkness right in front of my car. It really was just a side swipe so I was stunned by the amount of damage when I stopped to car to get out and look. AND to top it off the damn thing ran off without even apologizing! I don't even get to keep the meat. Can't wait to see how much the repairs are...

That sucks! The rut is coming in so they are going to be all over the place. This should make you feel better though. It is quite hilarious to listen to -

I forget why, but there was no deductible when we got attacked by a suicidal deer many years ago. It wasn't even a chargeable accident. That doesn't negate the damage to your car, but maybe it will make your wallet feel better.
Of course, this may have changed in the 20 years since I had an accident.

I grazed a deer in TD's WRX a couple years ago. Fortunately, no damage to the car. There are a LOT of deer around here, so I'm always looking at the side of the road for any deer that are loitering there. Hell, there's a deer path through our back yard!

I've never heard the argument for moving deer crossing signs before!! I've heard it's better to hit the animal then swerve and hit something else. If you hit the animal the accident is the animal's fault, whereas if you swerve and hit a tree it goes on your record as your fault. If it's true, I'm surprised PETA isn't all over car insurance companies for putting a target on bambi!

DS was about 5 when he was in the car with DH and they hit a deer. DH saw it an managed to almost stop. I was at home and will never forget DS running in an yellling " Mommy, we bonked a deer!!!"
DH said that was how it sounded. BONK then the deer ran off.

Whelp, damages are $2,300. I may have the car back on the 30th. DH and I are going out of town on the 1st and were hoping to take the car instead of the van. We'll see.

You sound like me the one time a deer hit me (I didn't hit it, it hit me, right between front and back doors on the passenger side ). It didn't even have the good grace to die instead of running off!

Sorry to hear about your deer encounter. Try to concentrate on the positive. You survived the encounter and so did your car. I've been through this 3 times and luckily the deer have acknowledged the sacrificed Honda and have left my current car alone. Still have to be wary. Lots of deer around here too.
Apple1's pictured vehicle is good but doesn't help when deer fur is sucked into the grill or you are forced to run over one or more deer.

I'm so glad you and the deer were ok but I'm sorry he didn't think to apologize to you for the damage. I highly recommend Deer Whistles to be placed in the front of your vehicles. We are inundated with them around here and my biggest fear is that we'll kill them or they'll kill us. When we were driving back from Cedar Key or when we come home late from our property there are dozens and dozens along the highways. Stresses me out! We see them dead on the side of the roads a lot. So sad. But I always wonder what the vehicles look like when they hit that hard to kill one.

LOL I thought you meant you were concerned about being killed by a deer whistle, or that your whistle would kill a deer! OMG I hope you are paying the vet bill! (Just think of the bruise and trauma you caused!) I'm glad you are okay too.

OMG I can't believe that woman in the clip . . . seriously dense
Deer Whistles for cars? I have never heard of them before. Thanks POM, I'm going to look for them because we've had a couple of close encounters.

That doesn't negate the damage to your car, but maybe it will make your wallet feel better. Of course, this may have changed in the 20 years since I had an accident. It's because it's covered under comprehensive, not collision. It's considered an "Act of God", same as hail damage. I have hit a deer with every vehicle I've ever owned. Every. Single. One. Some of them 2 or 3 times. I've learned have a zero deductible on comprehensive is a good idea for me! They are so thick around here, sometimes there are 30 of them in my back yard. I'm skeptical of the deer whistles myself. They've been around forever and if they really worked, you'd think insurance companies would be all over giving discounts to people to have them installed. They lose SO much money to deer damage claims.

One thing to always remember that deer exist in herds. So if you see one deer cross the road, stop. There are probably more coming. Also, they like twilight and right before sunrise. That is when you have to be particularly careful.
I honestly keep picturing me being run over by a deer. I have to walk my dog in early morning and twilight. I wonder if I can get out of the way fast enough or if they will just run over me.
I am not a fan of deer. Bambi aside, they eat anything I plant in my garden (they spit the cherry tomatoes OUT) and scare me.
Not fun.

My DH almost hit a deer on his bicycle on his way to work last month. He came within a couple of feet before he could stop.

Oh FFS!
DH just called me (he was on call last night so has today off). He was outside mowing the lawn and apparently startled a Deer who ran right through our garage window!!!
Seriously!!! This is a typical neighborhood. I thought we were getting away from the damn deer when we moved.
WTF?
(DH is fine, my first question actually, he just needs to stop hyperventilating).
Stupid vermin also ran through some plants I just bought, but those - as well as the window - are easily replaced.
*Groan* what is it with us and stupid deer?
(ok, you guys can stop laughing right now, seriously, like ok - maybe it's a little funny)
Another Captain household first - according to our insurance agent this is the first time they received a call about this type of incident. We really are not in deer country anymore so I don't know where the hell it came from.

oh jeez. that is a new one. I don't know what's up with all the deer, but I saw three on my way in to work this morning, dead on the side of the highway. maybe it was a cold winter?

If the area is really abnormal for deer, and he was acting erratically, you might want to call animal control and at least ask if they want to check it out...

A year or 2 ago, a deer ran through someone's living room window just around the corner from me. This is inner circle suburbia with < 1/4 acre lots. The first 30 or so years that I lived around here, I never saw any deer. Now I see them regularly as I take the kids to the sitter, as well as a block or 2 from my house. Same story with wild turkeys. I blame the people that built all the houses in the sticks.

Try hitting a deer with this and you'll quickly find out why these are called "brush bars"... They look awesome, but don't really protect as much as you might think.
Don't ask me how I know this.

You should blame the anti-hunting crowd. Deer populations can be easily managed, but so many people are against hunting them that their populations continue to explode into residential and urban areas. Cars and deer don't mix well.

For most "brush bars" I agree with you Milee. They are more cosmetic than functional. But look closely at this set up. All welded. Not a lighter, bolt together kit from a box. Radiator hoop is welded to that big honkin bumper. Fender wings have what looks like a 3/8 inch or so gusset welded between the fender wings and the bumper. Keeps the wings from folding back into the fender if you take a hit on the cormer. Can't quite be sure, but the main verticle pieces look like they could be 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inch plate steel. This brush bar set up looks like it could be heavy enough that someone had to put heavier front springs in that truck to keep the brush bars from dragging on the road.

Mine was welded... and also attached to the front of a Land Rover, so not exactly a light duty vehicle. The bumper level portion is helpful, but anything above that is more for looks. Again, they're more decorative then structural. Even with the welds.
They're a form of car jewelry.
