TD and I are in KY right now, emptying out my apartment to move me out to WA. Right now, the movers are dismantling my kitchen and packing it up, movers come tomorrow. He's out trying to find a place to recycle my old computer, which is made more difficult because I no longer have a KY driver's license to prove I live here.
I have given away my dining room set, microwave, TV, bike rack (for my Sentra, no longer have the car), a buttload of duplicate small appliances, my canisters. The Salvation Army got 2 garbage bags of shoes and 4 of clothes. The library got 3 boxes of books. Right now, waiting for someone to pick up the cat carriers, or I am going to donate them to the vet's office across the street.
I made the executive decision to let someone else do all the packing and lifting. The price differential between renting a UHaul ourselves and driving it (needing to hire on both ends and buy packing materials, plus gas), a POD (same as UHaul minus gas) and movers doing the whole enchilada was only about $500. Seemed like a no brainer. So moral of the story, don't always assume that what should be the most expensive IS the most expensive.
Last night, TD and I went out to dinner at one of our favorite places in town. Other than being a very decent steak place, they make an awesome crabcake appetizer. However, it's no longer on the menu. So last night, I asked our waiter that if the crabcakes are no longer on the menu, was there any chance of getting a copy of the recipe. Past requests were denied.
The owner of the restaurant brought a xeroxed copy of the recipe to me personally, and gave me a lot of hints how they're made. Smallest permutation of it calls for 5 lbs of lump crabmeat and makes 30 crabcakes. Might be able to half that though.....but I could not believe that we got it!!

Aw, good luck, Mich. Kinda sad to make the change, but nice in a way as well. At least someone will be around to keep TD in line full-time. Oh, and I could make 30 crabcakes and freeze them from that recipe, no problem. Assuming DH did not eat them all first. I'm not the crabcake fan; he loves them.

Staples the office store will take them in to recycle. You just walk it to the curtesy counter and tell them you want to recycle it. they will have you fill out a paper saying that's what you did and that the hard drive etc will be stripped. I had to wait in line behind a woman who brought one in for that once. Don't know if you have any Staples by you but I hope it helps. Good luck with the move!

I've always used the crab cake recipe on the Old Bay container, but I'm open to anything.

I'm not a crab cake fan. I'm going to blame it on growing up in the Great Lakes area and not having crabs to eat/use.... I've had them a few times, just not my thing. Although I did have PF Chang's crab fried rice this weekend.

So, this thing between you and TD is getting a little serious, huh? Are you giving notice for your job (IIRC, you are currently out on disability)? Are there comparable career opportunities for you in WA, or will you simply become a kept woman (and a YM failure)? Safe move. It does suck, but it is usually well worth the effort. Tell TD to watch his back -- DH ruptured a disk last time we moved.

Tell TD to watch his back -- DH ruptured a disk last time we moved. I'm still out on disability. While I can walk, my stamina really sucks and I really cannot walk distances. A couple blocks is about the distance I can walk before my limping starts and since it takes waaay more energy to lmp, I wear out even faster. Orthopedic surgeon says I may be good to go after the first of the year. Hopefully, my job disability will continue to pay out until then, or I do become a kept woman. However, my boss knows everyone and has already started the ball rolling in WA for me. And since over the years, numerous people have attempted to poach me. The field is small and in March I went to my research meeting (nearly killed me) and networked like crazy. I think I had some success. FWIW, when you go out on disability, you have to give up your job. I'm lucky in that my job continues to any my health insurance and retirement, and it replaces 70% of my income...but is offset by SSDI.

Mich - I was curious on how you were doing. It sounds like "okay", but I hope you are able to get your stamina up and hopefully go to back to work. You are lucky that your job continues to pay your health insurance and retirement. At least 70% is better than nothing. Good luck with the rest of your recovery.

Safe move, Mich - and say hi to TD - tell him we miss him here (sort of). He needs to start posting again.

I saw my orthopod last month and he was very happy as to ow well I am doing. He said that putting me back together took every skill he had. I'm getting frustrated, but walk a very fine line. If I do too much, I set myself back so I have to find the line where I do as much as I can, but don't set myself back. I agree about my benefits, but I deliberately looked for jobs that had excellent benefits at the expense of a salary (even though I was doing well there too).

Mich, You are a smart woman getting rid of all of that stuff and paying movers. We've had the benefit of several company paid moves but still high on my list of money well spent, was hiring professionals to move our furniture 4 doors up the street (in 1995). I watched the movers lift a 300 lb library table over our front porch railing. All I could think of was DH and I would have no backs after that. Hopefully you took pictures of any valuable furniture and are insuring it. Be sure to examine everything carefully upon arrival. We were pretty disappointed with the condition of furniture we moved from DH's cousin's home in MA to SF Bay Area. Good luck with the move, best to TD, and I hope you love WA!

I love crab anything - well - you know what I mean - I'm speaking food-wise.
Speaking of which, I have some huge Alaska King Crab legs in the freezer - I guess I should have them one of these weekends - steamed and served with drawn garlic butter for dipping the meat, and garlic toast and a side of some kind (seared veggies or baked potato - or both).
Oops - I think I just went off-topic. Back to regularly scheduled moving posts.

Goodwill recycles computers or will repair them to sell in store. I took our old laptop and my old desktop to our local store and they took both no questions asked.

TD wound up taking the computer to Best Buy to recycle.
Right now, my apartment only has the sofa, bed, chair and bike left in it. I'm going to get dumped from my chair soon!
