In what universe is telling someone they should eat more a compliment? If someone walked up to an overweight/obese person and told them they needed to eat less, would that be a compliment<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> No, that is offensive. You need to be sensitive when it comes to overweight people. Backhanded compliments to skinny people, totally acceptable. Implying that you must have an eating disorder in order to be as small as you are is supposed to be flattering! I’ll remember that next time.

Ugh. I'm not tiny (5'7'') but I don't like to eat. It's a chore for me to decide what I feel like eating for the day, and I usually only have 1 meal. And I'm picky. If there are onions, I'll be picking them out. People who feel free to comment make me nuts.

FWIW my DD was very picky and didn't eat much when she was very young (less than 25 percentile for her age and height). I used to worry to no end until my grandmother in her great wisdom pointed out that "no child ever starved who had food in front of them".
My pediatrician agreed and said not to start the food wars/obsession as such a young age. Now at 10 DD is a very healthy and adventurous eater.

I guess I'm not that sensitive...my boss and I are in a weight loss competition so we both totally rag on each other over our lunches...at month end, the company buys us lunch and last month I ordered a sandwhich called "The Fat Clemenza"...damn did he enjoy that one! If someone is dieting and bitchign about their lunch, that doesn't bother me...I've spent half of my adult life on one diet or another so i feel their pain...Depending on my mood I can either be encouraging or I will brag about how f'n awesome my Fat Clemenza is

I catch flak for the total junk I tend to shovel in at lunch. 9 times out of 10 the person commenting is fatter than I am. That doesn't mean they're fat per se, I'm a total bean pole. My typical response is to gesture at my body and say something like "This doesn't happen by accident you know, I put a lot of time into getting just the right amount of fat, sodium, and 5,000 calories a day in to maintain this weight." They usually shut up after that, or get this look like they want to punch me in the face.

While I totally agree with you intellectually, my DD could gain 3lbs and still be <1% on the weight chart. It's hard not to get neurotic sometimes.

I just spent a week with my sister who made a comment on pretty much everything that went into my mouth. She means well, it's just that I have already made huge adjustments to my diet due to the diabetes diagnosis. She has decided to go non-GMO, and I just do not have the time to research that right now. So we agreed that she will send me lists of safe brands/stores, and I will try to work them in.
Her friend that I traveled with though, pissed me off with her rant on the NYC soda ban that just got reversed by a judge. How one can seriously go off on what obesity is costing the city while sneaking a smoke every chance she gets really annoyed me. My sister repeatedly told her that the building was no smoking, and to go down to the curb twenty feet away from any doorway or vent before lighting up. She lasted like two days before I caught her smoking on the lanai. I've never heard of anyone dying from second-hand soda drinking.

I get a lot of comments about what I eat from my coworkers. Actually it's more about how much I eat. The comments get tiresome coming from the same people day after day, year after year. Yes, I know I eat a lot. Yes I know I'm slim even though I eat a lot. Yes I'm happy that I can eat what I like instead of fruit and salads that I don't like.
I get tired of hearing it when it comes from the same coworkers all the time. The same coworkers that are always on a diet or trying to lose weight. Part of the difference is that even though I eat big meals, I very rarely eat junk food. No cookies, cakes, chips, candy or pies. I'd rather have some real food than sweets. They love sweets. The rest of it is my metabolism I guess, because I don't always make the healthies food choices either. As long as it's not ruining my health, I'm going to eat what I like and as much as I want.
I know that certain coworkers aren't complimenting me. They say those things because of their own issues. Some people though, are really surprised when they see how much I can eat. I've heard enough comments about it in my lifetime, that I don't think everybody that expresses their surprise has an issue or is being offensive. Just certain ones.

I am a chocoholic. I wear a size 2 so as long as I continue to stay thin and healthy I don't really give a crap. I used to work with a lady who made comments about my chocolate intake. She typically would say things like "it must be nice to be thin and be able to eat a Hershey bar." After about the 4th time she made such a comment I turned to her and asked her if she would like to go run with me during my lunch break. She pretty much shut up after that...
