We came within <$100 (owed) on our federal taxes, Phil would approve. But our state taxes are ridiculously low so we ended up with a $900 refund. We are going to a Soundgarden concert in May and staying at a fancy hotel. DH is using whatever is left over to get another tattoo.
What non-YM-approved things have you done lately?

We purchased a 3.5k dinning room set from Crate & Barrel, a 1.2k sofa from Boston Interiors. We are getting back 1k from the Feds, $450 from NY and $100 from MA. We are using that to go on a trip for our 10 year Anniversary, my birthday and her birthday. So all in one trip! We are also trying to decide between buying her the mini cooper clubman now or when the lease is over on her Honda Civic in September, we are still debating. Why? We just got approved for 0% loan and not sure if we want to pull the trigger or risk waiting till September. The new car will come to about 30k. And we are planning on getting pregnant between now and next year. Using the pull out method so might get pregnant sooner than later ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ; going on 5 months now and have been lucky so far ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Damn, I am going to YM hell!

We've spent about double what we could get for our house on improvements. And we are going to spend more . . .
That is nuts. You are going to be so sad when your kid scratches it and sticks play dough to it. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

Why the pull-out method, Carl? Is it the fun of playing Russian Roulette? Otherwise, you want a baby (no birth control) or you don't (birth control). This seems rather passive-aggressive to me . . . particularly in light of your furor over your wife trying to "trick" you into getting her pregnant. The games people play . . . .
We will stick our $1000 (combined state, which is higher, and federal) refunds into the house account. We are fixing a leak in the skylights in the sunroom. Phil is absolutely right about asking why people cut up a perfectly good roof to put in skylights. Ours came with them, however, and the reroofing that we did three years ago left them leaking. The contractor went out of business (so much for labor guarantees), and we are working with a new contractor.
I don't even try to figure out taxes any more. DH doesn't have anything taken out of his SS so that has to be covered. But SS isn't taxable by Alabama so that's non-income. I just stick with what works, and get about $400/$600 back. That's close enough. It gives a nice boost to savings, but the addition to my take-home would be negligible. It's not so much that I feel like I've given Uncle Sam the interest-free loan.

Nope, no thrill in playing Russian Roulette. Woke up one day and realized I forgot to order condoms and we've been using the pull out method since then. And the key word is "trick"; we are both on the same page when it comes to kids now. She would "prefer" to wait till she has 1 year at her job before getting pregnant but admit it wouldn't be the end of the world if she got knocked up now. I have some breathing room when it comes to finances and close to where I wanted to be before having kids. - 2 small student loans paid off - credit card will be paid off by May - car will be paid off by the end of the year Right there is ~1k/month in payments gone!

I am more than aware of what damages a kid can cause. I have witness quite a few and even cause some of them growing up. My wife on the hand is blissfully ignorant of that fact ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Uh - weren't you just talking about taking on another car payment?
Kids or no I'd have issues paying 3.5k on a dining room set when you guys are renting and have that many student loans. I hate to pull out my YM card but DH and I have better cash flow and networth and wouldn't consider purchasing a set of that value, especially with kids in the picture.

I just submitted our package to the accountants. I think we're going to owe a chunk of change plus penalties. We've been making estimated tax payments but the oil revenues and dividends did much better than projected. I went to Bev Mo today and bought $60 of booze! ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

I can't wrap my head around the fact that you've been leasing the car for however long and it still costs $30k to buy. There is no way on this Earth that I would be paying $30k for a friggin' Civic!!!

Uh - weren't you just talking about taking on another car payment? And we do have a lease on her car. Future car payments vs the lease will come to about the same. I am not replacing my car payment: And that is fine and dandy because I am not seeking YM approval. You do what you feel is right for you and we do what we feel is right for us.

I misinterpreted then. My apologies. It seemed like you were buying your wife's car at the end of her lease, not A car for her at the end.

Doughnuts and coffee in the morning or buying lunch out 3 days out of 5 for the last couple of months. Paid rent for my ex because he's in the hospital (Should be reimbursed when/if he gets out). Diaper service. Sitting on a relatively large percentage of our net worth in cash. Quitting my job.

Do you really feel like spending that much on a dining set is right for you when you have so much debt? ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/huh.gif)

The thread is about spending frivolously; can we save the lecture/judgement when it is about "budgets" "cutting back" and what not. The OP ask how we are spending frivolously, I obliged with an answer... I did not expect nor ask for approval or judgement If on a thread asking how we are un-YM like by spending frivolously I cannot answer honestly without getting grilled, why start the thread?

What non-YM-approved things have you done lately? 1. Spent $400 updating my wardrobe last month 2. Put down a 5k deposit in December on a trip to Europe for me and my parents that will cost more than my car 3. Buy expensive skin creams which YMers have told me don't work as well as water or olive oil or whatever else I could find in my kitchen ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png)

I haven't done my taxes yet. Pretty sure I am paying more in so I'll hold out until the last. I'm bad this year - didn't buy my turbo tax yet. Will be looking for a different program this year since I think it did some funny things last year. Non YM approved activity today: Made my lunch last night & forgot to take it with me this morning so ended up buying lunch despite my best YM intentions!! Non YM approved activity later this week: Taking a friend out to a fancy bar/lounge for expensive wine & Kobe burgers ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)
