I paid 200 for my dining room suit used maybe 9 years ago... All that's left is the table, the veneer is coming off the top, but its huge, expandable and I just throw a tablecloth on it... Benches my dad made, chairs picked up for 50$ at an auction...
but I am planning on Europe again fall 2014.... We all have different priorities... (And apparently own varying numbers of books....)

Carl, very nice! Ours was opposite of yours. Our sofa and loveseat in our family room were just over $3,000 and our dining set was about $1,200. But yours will last forever - even with kids! If it gets nicked up it will have character. Ohhhhh, wrongside! You are in troubllllle for having TWO new car payments at the same time.

Oh sweetie. You've already been there as long as I've been reading you. (the above was posted on page 1 in response to Carl saying he was going to YM hell). Oh, POM. I absolutely adore you.

We got ~$1200 back from federal and state (mostly federal). We're using it to pay off a new Apple desktop we bought a few months ago.

Carl, am I seeing the pictures correctly? Is the new living room sofa also white? P.S. Your wife does have good taste and a good sense of her own style. And, I, too, would love a farmhouse-style table. Sigh. Maybe someday. In the meantime, we're using a final sale warehouse clearance special.

Part of our federal refund will be used to pay taxes and interest to the state. I never realized that the state would charge us 13% interest on money that wasn't withheld, even though we owed too little for penalties.

Not that C or Mrs. C needs our approval, but I think most of their apartment looks pretty kid-friendly. That table is sturdy and the wood will hide some of the indicental nicks or scratches. Most of the apartment looks like it has hardwood or solid surface floors and it's not cluttered. Little people could easily play on the floor in many places. Yeah, any upholstered sofa is going to be a risk, but at least the white one looks like a slipcover, so it could be washed and eventually replaced or dyed darker. Overall, I think their place looks really nice and wish I had that kind of eye for putting stuff together. When we were broke, I thought my problem was that I didn't have the money to decorate. Now that I have the money, I realize more of my problem is not really knowing (and honestly, not being interested enough to find out) how to put looks together. Mrs. C seems to know how to do that, so she'll figure out the kid stuff. Looks like a nice, comfy, cosy nest. I agree!

Thanks everyone, I would love to show this to my wife but she would kill me for posting pictures and price lol. The sofa is off white or beige I believe. And the one in the office/guest room is a slip cover that can be washed. We don't have a storage area, the only Storage we have is one of the closets in the office/guest room (behind the sofa) and a coat closet. We both hate clutter and love open space so along the years we have - donated/gifted a lot of the things we no longer used or needed - one thing come in, two must go - do a purge every 6 months or a year (moving a lot has helped). I cannot take credit for any of it, it is all my wife. Every single piece of item, location etc was her. She definitely has the touch for it. As for being to perfect and afraid to touch or seat down, many of our guests has said the same thing and I have complained about it. My apartment is always perfect, like right out of a calendar every day. My wife cannot go to bed unless everything is literally perfect. But her mom is the same way and treat her house the same way so I can see where she gets it from. They both take pride in their space and keep it immaculate. Sometimes I feel like that in my own home (don't want to touch or seat) and it get annoying. And it annoys her because she feels she is always picking up after me, I do admit that sometime I create a mess just to annoy her lol If I really want to drive her crazy is invite people over and tell her last minute. Her OCD kicks in overdrive and she tries to clean everything... Also is really pissed at me. She hates surprise guests because she always want to be prepared: clean, etc. She is nuts but she is my nut and I love her just like that.

90 percent of our tax refund went right into savings.
10 percent of our tax refund is going toward getting our kitchen ceiling retextured/repainted (we replaced a light fixture a few years back and haven't been happy with the ceiling, so now we're fixing that) and also getting half the laundry room painted a bright white (lots of shelves) ... and a new laundry room sink installed. The last little splurge? A new stain-free Moen faucet for the kitchen sink.

OMG, kids are going to stress her out. LOL I call my 2 year old "The Tornado". It doesn't help that my husband loves to buy toys. If it was up to me, we'd only have a few, but he is of the opinion that if one toy car is fun, 20 is 20 times the fun.

The apartment is very nicely put together. Kids are mini wrecking crews.
My place is nowhere near that. Then again I also didn't spend that kind of money at Pottery Barn. I'd rather have a space people feel comfortable in. If I can't relax in my own home, something is very wrong.

Back when I was a SAHM, I kept the place immaculate, but now with two kids and working, I gave up and let myself collapse on the couch with DH and a movie in the evenings. If there is popcorn on the floor and toys still out before I go to bed, so be it, there will just be more tomorrow anyhow.

My grandma used to be like that I heard. She was mostly a SAHM. She gave it up when they moved to the country. Several people told her they enjoyed coming to her house much more. Her house was clean enough and I remember the time she spent with us grandkids not how clean her house was. Sometimes good enough is good enough. I try to keep up with certain things due to dust mites/dust allergies but some days are better than others.

A couple of friends have the Basque collection as well and it seriously gorgeous, but the mango wood scratches so easily with no kids! Be careful! Of course, even knowing that I still want it!

Does anyone else feel like they want a new dining set now? I would like A dining room set! We opted for a well-stocked bar in place of a table. Our apartment is small. We could have squeezed in a table and two chairs if I didn't have a kitchen cart and a bakers rack. I have a lot of cookbooks and kitchen appliances...

Shamrock - putting in an inground 14 ft x 30 ft rectangle with curved ends. Kid gets to play and I will try to do laps. Should be ready by the 100 degree weather!

About 40% of our refund just went into the car last night . DH is trying to get his old car up and running and what we thought would be a $500 fix has turned into $2k+....We don't actually need the car (We each have a newer one) but he is attached to it (I think it is DH's Herbie... although he doesn't want to be buried in it ) so we keep fixing it. I figure it's his $$ (I only work parttime and the refund certainly didn't come from my withholdings) so if he wants to use it for that, it's cool.

That's okay. In 2010 I used my tax refund as an excuse to buy a new computer. Spent about $2,000 on it, I think my tax refund was like $1500 or something.

I should never have posted this thread - on Tuesday night we ran out of propane (oops) so I had to have the tank filled yesterday. $500 of my $900 refund gone! It is nice to have heat again, though
