Does anyone use this? If so, what for and how? I just ordered some from Amazon. I read it's good for skin and hair, but not sure how to use it. Reading further, I see people use it for all kinds of things. Does anyone eat it? It says it's high in saturated fats, yet in the same sentence says it's healthy. Tell me about the 101 uses!

I have used it in some skin mixtures ( foot lotion bars, foot oil, lip balm, bath melties, homemade deodorant, natural perfume...). Mostly I just take whats left over from the spoon and rub it on my hands and wherever else I want it ... I haven't really used it on my face?

I use it as a diaper rash ointment and in cooking. It is very healthy--something about how the saturated fats are different, or aren't absorbed the same, I don't remember exactly.
Edit to add: I've never used it on my skin, but I have some friends who do. They say that you should only use unrefined coconut oil on skin. One of them had irritation when they used refined. I'm not sure if that is universally an issue, but something to be aware of if you bought refined.

We use it all the time for cooking at home. I've never tried it for any other purpose and, as far as I know, my DW has only used it for cooking, so can't comment on the skin use.
It's really great to cook with and you really don't need to use much at all. Stir-fried green beans with coconut oil is amazing!

I've been using it for a while, I use it in cooking and some baking. If you got the unrefined it will likely have a coconut taste to it (and I LOVE the smell). I have used it in lotion bars, lip balm and my own lotion mixture (found it works a lot better than the other stuff--it also keeps my finger tips from peeling as long as I remember to use it. It's a mix of beeswax, almond oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil and honey).
I've also used it on my scalp when it feels a little dry, and on my hair to moisturize it. I've also used it on my face before going to bed when it is dry. Like oped mentioned, any time I have some left on a spoon I rub it in somewhere. Have I mentioned I love the smell?? It is a little greasy for the first couple minutes, but it soaks in and doesn't feel greasy anymore.
It is saturated fat, but it has HCLs or some crap like that that is supposed to be healthy. Like anything else, just use it in moderation.
Oh, I also use it in homemade dog treats. My dog loves them.

My hair is naturally curly and is prone to frizz, being dry, etc (much, much better since I've been "no-poo"--about a year now). When I put some on my hands, right before it is all the way absorbed I'll run my hands through my hair to just barely get some on there. It helps tame frizz (I use a leave-in lotion that has coconut milk as well). Any more than that at all and it would make my hair greasy. I only do that once a week at most.
For my scalp, I'll just put my finger on the oil enough to melt a little, then rub it in. Any more than that, and hair gets greasy. Fine balance...

If I can remember it is because most fats have long chain triglycerides and Coconut has medium chain triglycerides. The shorter length is supposed to be much more heathy and help you stay/be less fat.

If you rub it into your skin and hair, do you end up smelling like Coppertone?

It's great as a tanning lotion if you use it on your face and body. I use a little on my hair to tame the frizz - just like apple does. I also use it as a lip balm - just a small swipe with a tiny amt.

I read that for a hair conditioner, you can put it on dry hair before you shower. Wait about 30 minutes then shampoo out. I would try this on a weekend. I normally wash my hair at night, and in the morning I use a leave in product, like Infusium, or sometimes a small amount of moraccan oil, then i use hot rollers. I hope to be able to use coconut oil instead. My hair and skin got very dry after the 'paws' hit! I can't wait for my jar to come.
And what's up with Amazon Prime? My past few orders took way more than 2 days. I ordered this yesterday, and the ETA is Feb. 19th! I'm not sure it's worth paying for anymore. I use to get my packages in a day.

I also read it's good for cats. We'll see if my boy will eat it.

I love to cook and bake with it. I've never used it on my skin though. Wouldn't it be greasy?

I slather it on my face every day, i have dry skin and it is great. It is also helpful for any breatk-outs and rashes. I mix a jar of coconut oil with some vitamin E oil and use it as a moisturizer/lotion. And dogs LOVE it. every time my dog hears my jar open, he comes running to beg for some. I also cook with it on occasion and use it in my homemade lip balm. I love the stuff!

I buy lip balm containers empty, although you can reuse them, and or just put them in a small container... Altoid little tins work well. 1tsp beeswax 1 TBS coconut oil 1 TBS grape seed oil 6 drops essential orange oil Combine first three, melt in oven/ stovetop/ microwave, till beeswax can be blended. Add orange oil and pour into containers. Leave out till hardens. This is the recipe we've been using. We double it and it fills 6-8 little tubes. Depending on how much I spill

or try your local health food store

How do you make lip balm? Lip Balm0.5 ounces beeswax1 tablespoon coconut oil1 tablespoon shea butter4 vitamin E capsules20-25 drops peppermint essential oil
Melt everything together in a double boiler... transfer to preferred container. I but the chap stick type roll up containers because I hate sticking my finger in the little pots to apply lip balm. I use a cooking syringe to fill the containers, super easy and works perfectly. I think this recipe makes about 10 lip balms... This is hands down the most moisturizing lip balm I've ever used... it keeps my lips soft throughout the chicago winters!

My lip balm is close to those, although I use beeswax, coconut oil and jojoba oil, then a little honey. Sometimes almond oil too, lol. The essential oils tended to be more drying for me, but maybe it was just that it was winter time. Mountain Rose Herbs is a great place to buy the containers. Greasy--at first, but once it absorbs in (a few minutes or so) it's not. Coppertone-- I always loved the smell of coppertone If someone didn't like the smell of coconut oil they could use refined oil. It's mechanically done, not chemically, but it removes the smell and the oil is more firm. I've used coconut lotion and coconut scented deodorant for years, and it works well with my perfume, so not a bad thing in my opinion.

I'm not sure if the sale is still going, but Fred Meyer had coconut oil (Nature's Way) on sale BOGO free. I got two big tubs because I've been using it more. Just a reminder to look in town every now and then, I just happened to stumble upon it and the price ended up much better than online prices.

Someone called me Monday and told me that they read that coconut oil prevents alzheimers (I know I didn't spell that right). So she is taking a tablespoon a day.

Happyscooter...I read the same thing. Prevents, and slows down if you already have it. Some say you can lose weight too. So condition hair and skin, cook and bake, WD-40 replacement, make lip balm, prevent alzheimers, and lose weight. Sounds too good to be true!

If anybody's interested, here's the science:The naturally occurring saturated fat found in coconut oil has some pretty amazing health benefits such as: promoting heart health, weight loss, immune system health, thyroid function and more. This is because half of the fat content in coconut oil is lauric acid—a fat rarely found in nature. Your body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoa properties.
