It's a staple in my new soap habit and good for cooking too.

My first recipe was 16 oz veg oil(soy, cottonseed)look at the label, they vary. 7 oz Olive oil 6 oz coconut oil water 9.57 oz Lye 3.97 oz. I did this one in the crockpot the advantage being you can use it right away and scents will stick better in the soap. Disadvantage it is a rougher, more primitive looking soap than doing it the cold process way. Since then I have use many combos of oils but always coconut and always olive oil. I have used palm, sesame, avocado, lard, canola, hemp, sunflower, cocoa butter, shea butter, etc in different amounts. The three suggested basics for beginners are either Palm or Lard, Coconut & Olive. Using coconut as more than 20% of recipe can be drying to some people like me. I need lots of olive in the winter. There are some great videos on youtube and online Lye calculators that will tell you how much water and Lye you will need for the specific oils and fats in your recipe and they will guide you as to what kind of soap you will end up with (hard, creamy, bubbly, etc). It seems kind of intimidating at first, but it really isn't hard and you can make a really nice soap with a simple recipe. You need a scale as all is configured by weight. It's really fun and easy to get carried away with this hobby and it has saved me from the cortisone prescriptions I normally need for my legs (excema) in the winter. I will try to post some some pics of the soap I made later.

These I made on Fri and cut last night. They will turn a little darker still because of the fragrance I used.

My coconut oil came today. So far I used it on my face. It felt a little greasy at first, but did sink into the skin. Tomorrow I'll try a dab on dry hair before I curl it or straighten it.
And that soap does sound intimidating!

I am allergic to coconut. It makes my throat close, so we have a coconut free house.

I've used coconut and coconut oil for cooking pretty much all my life. That's probably the secret of my high immunity.

I love coconut oil! I use it on my skin after a shower, on my lips, in my hair, and I also cook/bake with it. Jus tmake sure you store it correctly or it WILL mold! I found that out the hard way!

So,are you enjoying the coconut oil still? ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png) Well, I like it, but not sure I love it. I still have to put moisturizer on my face. To me, the coconut oil almost seems drying after it sinks in. I was using it on my cuticles, and they seemed dryer than ever. And for my hair, I like Infusium better. I do love the way it smells. Are you guys mixing it with your regular lotion, or using straight?

I store mine in the fridge now. I don't know how you are really supposed to do it. Italy is very hot and humid so storing it on my counter didn't work out well.

Mine goes liquid on the counter in summer, but I've never had a problem?

It will get hard in the fridge though. I've had to adjust recipes in the past, say for ice box cookies, because refrigerating for too long makes them too solid...

XmasCookie? Are you selling those soaps? If not, you probably should be. They're beautiful. Aww thanks lone ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/heart.png) I am not selling them. I have only been making them a couple months and still experimenting with oil combos and watching to see how they hold up over time and in the shower. I have been giving them to all my friends , co workers, family for feedback. So far so good. Co workers are asking to buy them but I don't feel ready for that. Maybe I will trade them for olive oil. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png) I am thinking it could maybe help supplement my retirement income someday doing farmers markets or something. I will have more experience by then. Right now I'm just having fun making them.

Coconut oil, aka CO, is popular among low carb dieters. Some use it to cook with, and some put it in coffee. Personally, I've never tried it, internally or externally. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)
