...and let's keep it PG rated, ok?
I'd like to surprise DH with something for Valentines day. He's usually the one who remembers the card and I tend to blow it off.
I've about done the best buy and jamba juice gift cards to death. He loves his tech toys but I have no idea of what to get him.
Any ideas?

New lingerie and a can of whip cream.
Way better than some gadget he'll barely use.

Sorry Dark, can't do. There was a whip cream can incident years ago that still gives him nightmares.

Since you've gone kind of impersonal in the past (gift cards), would he be really surprised and appreciate it if you did something different like made him chocolate dipped strawberries?

They're super easy (wash/dry strawberries, melt chocolate in microwave, dip, cool), take less than 20 minutes, but are personal and sweet.

I know that sort of thing isn't everybody's thing, though. Just an idea to be different.

No suggestions here. I'm one who counts Valentines day in the category of "stupid american holiday". We exchange cards.
But you could always do something simple like cook a meal he really likes. DH has a dish that he loves (and I can't stand) so it's a BIG deal if I make it.

oldtex, LOL! thecaptain: I've got two drawers of lingerie, so instead of buying something new, I give DH two color choices: Red or blue? And then come to bed dressed accordingly. We also own an adult board game and a dart game. DH LOVES them.

OMG, have you even seen the movie "The Sweetest Thing"?!?! No, but I know what you are referring to. And FWIW, I've worked in the local jail. I saw plenty of inanimate objects in places where they did not belong. And not for kinky, sexy reasons, either. Dang, the things people will do sometimes just boggled my mind.

I gave my hubby an early valentine's day gift yesterday. I told him I thought it was stupid to spend money on junk when we still have stuff to pay off, so I suggested we get each other cards and call it good. He was overjoyed.

Can't do it. Totally stuck on the idea of distinctly low-tech toys.

...:::"melt chocolate in microwave, dip, cool":::...
EGAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDD NOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Not in the microwave, please!
The proper way to melt chocolate (particularly for coating something like berries) is using a double boiler. The microwave can cause the chocolate to get gritty and crystalline, and lump together. Just take a saucepan, half filled with water, and bring the water to a boil. Lay a spatula or serving spoon or something large inside the pan, then rest a pyrex measuring cup on it. Cut the chocolate into small pieces and drop it in and stir constantly.
I'll be doing exactly this for valentines day.
...:::"what about homemade IOU cards for personal stuff?":::...
And no blackout dates or early expiration like Sheldon's coupons.
I intend to deliver something to DW's office personally. I haven't decided whether it will be some lunch, a gift, candy, or all of the above on different days. I'm going for effort, not cost. Any idiot can charge an expensive something or other on a CC and have it delivered. DW does seem to appreciate effort.

Yes, WWBG, the proper way is not only to use the double boiler, but to temper the chocolate (cool it below a certain temperature and then gently reheat it to prevent future blooming), but for people that don't cook, that type of complication turns them off so they don't do anything.
For most people, microwaving in short intervals (like 10-20 seconds) and stirring works fine for chocolate and they don't mind the possibility of slight graininess or bloom. It's a perfectly acceptable shortcut and I'm guessing her hubby would like the gesture without requiring her to spend hours on it.

OK, don't laugh, but get him some flowers and a thank you card for all he's done for you. It's the best thing I ever got from my wife. The other fun stuff came after that.

DF and I have a love for the local lake; there's a lookout point that's really nice, so I was thinking we'd splurge, get a bag of picnic items from WF (he likes the barbecues, I have a thing for their dessert counter) and we'd just relax and watch the sunset and clouds together after work. It's been warm lately, but if it's going to be chilly, eh, we're both very cold hardy. I admit, I am darn lazy about holidays. School burnt me out; now if I hear "holiday" I think "time to relax" instead of feeling stressed about gift expectations and expenses on top of regular & extra work. Fourth of July is my favorite; crack a melon, grill a burger, maybe watch fireworks. Hang out with whoever you want, no one cares, and there's no gift stress. It's a dang good holiday

The year that I bought myself the pinstriped push-up with red lining in the cups was memorable, albeit PG-13.
Sadly, it was also the last time that I got much out of the accounting degree. Worse, google searches of "pinstripe bra" lead one to many leads but few of them have the necessary resolution to determine whether the pinstripes are correctly aligned to have the proper effect.
