Wow, that's impressive detective work. Just goes to show...no matter how smart you are or how smart you THINK you are, you can always get caught.

Because she's hot and guys want to have sex with hot women. For all the psychoanalysis, it's pretty much that simple.
::I'm not a man either, but it seems most of these politicians, men in power, famous athletes, movie stars, etc. do have that narcissism, and feel either like "they won't get caught" or they even enjoy the thrill and the dangerousness. I don't think it's really about sex either.::
To address this kind of analysis which seems pretty prevalent...he might be narcissistic, he might think he won't get caught, but basically none of that has to do with being a "man in power". Almost nobody thinks they'll be caught. I agree with almost all of the "reasoning" about thrill, danger, something new, etc. But it has nothing to do with having power...otherwise you'd never see an unemployed couch potato cheating...and they do.
But mostly, it's just about the sex. Not necessarily the hotness, but about getting some variety and proving you "can" get someone else. I think most men probably cheat for roughly the same set of reasons. It gets psychoanalyzed when it's someone famous, but those reasons are generally the same reason non-famous men cheat.

Wouldn't the "proving you "can" get someone else" by definition NOT be about sex, though? Seems psychological to me.

I'm not saying it can't be somewhat psychological, but that it's not really in the "he has power" kinda way. It's still MOSTLY about sex though. If you just wanted to prove you COULD, you could get her in a room somewhere, get her naked, then walk out. I think in my particular quote I was trying to focus more on "variety" than "being able to get" someone. I won't argue that some of it is psychological though (hence so many "internet" affairs).

Maybe the other thread has me thinking along these lines, but I also think there's a possibility that working out together contributed to it. Not many women can hang with his 6 minute mile that they often ran together.
I have never, ever cheated on my husband, but must admit that sometimes in boot camp classes the guys around me appear mighty tempting. Had to be a major turn on for him to have a hot, younger woman who not only was interested in him but could match him in the workouts. There's just something about someone next to you matching your exertion, sweat level and intensity...

I don't think this is a good reason for him to have to resign. He's been doing a brilliant job, and really, that should be what matters. An affair is only a security risk if he's susceptible to blackmail. So, make the affair public and you disarm any potential blackmail. I'm not sure why we make such a big deal about men who have affairs. Does it suck for their wife / family? Sure. Does it impact their ability to do what ever it is they do brilliantly? Not at all. I mean, I wouldn't fire my dentist if I found out he was cheating on his wife, because that has absolutely nothing to do with how well he cares for my teeth. So he banged a woman who wasn't his wife. So what? They carted out boxes of paper documents out of her house recently. I think he was sharing info with her that she wasn't supposed to have/see. If true, that's a security leak at best.

I'm assuming that this guy has a huge ego, she probably was fawning all over him, and probably put himself in many bad situations where he let his emotions take over. Men are scoundrals for the most part, so the only defense against that is to keep yourself out of trouble by not putting yourself in those situations. My Dh is a SAHD. He flat out refuses to socialize or do playdates with the SAHM's in the neighborhood for this reason. I didn't understand him at first. It wasn't until my male coworkers were like 'Well Duh, he is just being smart' that I finally got it. I hate to see him so isolated, though.

Wow - this story gets crazier and crazier. The woman who reported the affair to the FBI, Jill Kelley, has been exchanging 30-40 emails a day with General Allen. The FBI agent sent topless pictures of himself to this woman and pursued the case after being told to drop it.

I'm reading all the posts and have two questions running through my mind.
1) Are we really that surprised the someone in his position has had an extra-martial affair? The joke I heard on the radio this morning says it all- if every person in Washington who has had an affair resigned today, there would be no one left but Mitt Romney and he's not supposed to even be there.
2) How long before we start getting the stream of former mistresses coming out of the woodwork a la Tiger Woods? I have a really hard time believing he hasn't done this before.

Ignore "his position". Is anyone that surprised that someone who's a guy has had an extra marital affair? Some studies say 50% of married men cheat. I don't think anyone should be surprised EVER lol.

I think his position matters for couple of reasons.
1. He's in a position of leadership and responsibility. In general people like to know/assume their leaders are moral and upstanding. So it's a shock when a person in power does this. Of course no one is (as) surprised or outraged when an unemployed couch potato cheats.
2. Sort of along the same lines. In order to do what he did, he is obviously smart and capable. So it's a shock that someone so educated and capable would be so foolish. In other words, someone so qualified should know better. If a high school dropout does it, no one really bats much of an eye because they just assume they don't know better. Maybe it's bias against the poor and uneducated, but there it is.

I always see this stat and I'm not really disputing the validity of it....but I'm always curious as to why they hardly ever give the married women stat. Women cheat just like men. There is no difference. Now, personally, I don't have any issue with what Petraeus did other than the fact that if he gave this woman (or women) access to sensitive classified material then that's a national security risk. Other than that.....I don't care who he's sleeping with because that's an issue for him and his family.

I don't think anyone relates intelligence to cheating. I'm also not sure what is "foolish" about it in terms of intelligence. I would agree someone that qualified should "know better" if he had done something stupid to get caught. I can't imagine anyone is surprised that he did it based on how educated he is though. Does education really have any effect on whether people think it's "ok" to cheat? I can't say that's ever been a consideration when hearing this kind of hting.

They did, in fact the couple of places I checked all had the married woman stat. It tended to be significantly lower than the male stat though, based purely on memory it seemed to be about 1/2 to 2/3 of the male number.

I wonder if that's because married men are more likely to give the honest answer (due to various reasons) and married women want to keep it more discreet? I don't doubt that it may be less...but it's not as if you had to be honest when asked. I can "promise" to tell you the truth...but if there are zero repercussions to a false answer then I can give you whatever answer to "skew" actuality.

I wonder how they get that stat - self-reporting? Maybe more men than women are willing to admit to cheating. OTOH in my experience women define cheating more broadly than men do (e.g. "emotional" cheating), so it would stand to reason that more women would report cheating...

I'm sure when they ask, they define it pretty clearly. I also assume it's self-reported. But then most things we have stats on are.

If the reporting is gathered on cheating and not a full fledged affair, men's statistics are probably higher due to access to prostitutes.

Where can I find this unfettered access to free penis? 1. Walk out into street. 2. Ask first adult male you encounter if you can see his penis. You're welcome.

This thread just reinforces the old saying, "a man is only as faithful as his options"...seems to be a lot of truth in that.

I'm not saying random penii just show up on your doorstep, though I would not entirely discount that notion. You might have to go look for them. But they're out there, and I betcha you could borrow one for a while if you asked.

Street, office, facebook, craigslist, bar, friends, gym......the more places you ask, the better your odds! I'm pretty sure if word gets out that you are interested in finding some penis, you'll be presented some options. (Now I have "Dick in a Box" stuck in my head!) Please report back, I think now we are all interested in the results of this experiment.
