Do you think people from certain areas are nicer? I have lived in the midwest and the west coast and I have family that I visit often on the east coast. When it comes to general friendliness, especially of those in the customer service industry, the midwesterner are hands down nicer.

I have found the same thing. Midwest followed by the South.

I found it less geographical and more urban versus rural. Rural places are way more friendly and helpful. Big cities they step over your body if you're laying out in the street suffering from a heart attack.

Funny enough, I lived in a very small town in Oregon and the people were the same way, would just walk around you as you lay gasping in the street.

I'm sure some smaller places are like that but I haven't been in a lot of urban areas where people are friendly. Most of them are just rude.

There is that. I have always wondered if the hardship of dealing with the city world causes them to be so mean.

My mother often tells me "The majority of people are either rude, stupid, or both." I think she's right.
I wish I could say I thought people were nice, but I can't, and maybe its because I live in a crappy city, but I have been screwed over by so many supposed friends, and strangers aren't much better. Manners don't seem to be taught anymore and it bothers me to no extent! I have no trouble say "YOU'RE WELCOME!" loudly and sarcastically to people who don't thank me for holding the door for them! I had one woman the other day literally slam the door in my face rather than hold it 2 seconds for me upon entering a building! I mean really...the only way she could have been more rude is to lock it behind her and then stick her tongue out at me!
WTF is wrong with people these days?!?!

I deal with stupid people because of my job, if not for stupid people, no job. So I try to be nice and 90% of them are nice back, so I am ok with that, the other 10% "I hate the living" quote from Men in Black movie

I think most people are not nice, but most act nice (or at least civil) because most people are also too cowardly to act they way they'd like to for fear of getting knocked out. Hence the disproportionate amount of people who are jerks online who might otherwise be nice (even if it's fake nice) in person, less fear of getting punched in the nose.
Same goes for acting nice because you have a need to be liked, it might be "nice", but it's nice for selfish reasons of not wanting to be a social pariah. Take away the consequences and I think most people would be not nice than nice in terms of their inherent persona. I think more people act nice than act not nice though as a whole, too many social consequences for many people to prevent them from being not nice too often to too many people.

I think it depends on the circumstance at the time. I know some very two-faced people.

I try to be nice to everyone I see. If it is their decision to growl back, then it's their problem. Smiles are contagious 99% of the time.

I came home from work yesterday to my driveway blocked with a three foot high wall of frozen snow from the second pass of city plows. I drove to the end of the block to turn around and park. The storm had already exhausted me and I dreaded spending the next few hours chipping away and removing the snow. Well a man appeared with a snowblower and asked me if I would like him to clear my drive. Would I?!!!! He cleared it for me within ten minutes flat. I was so grateful and overwhelmed with this kindness. I just moved into the neighborhood three months ago. Well it was wonderful to meet my neighbor- he lives about four doors down- and to know there are some good people here. He said he would be happy to help me out with snowfalls in excess of 6 inches (I will pay of course). Yes, there are some very nice people- I met one yesterday!

That's wonderful, cruising! I do believe there are some nice people out there, but for some people it just takes some kind of trigger to make them step out of their comfort zone and offer to help others--sometimes storms can do that. I'm glad it worked out for you! And welcome to the board--I gave you your first karma, since you didn't have any yet. Seeing that 0 is so sad.

I'm happy for you too cruisin. I have been seeing alot of that around here the last few days. I am in the midwest so maybe there is a little of the regional thing going on too but people have been really impressing me lately with their thoughtfulness for others.

I always like to see the good in people. Although that hasn't really been working out for me so well lately.

I'm nice except when I'm tired; then I'm a grump. I think people are less nice these days than in the past. I think the pressures of life are getting to people. I usually say, "Have a most excellent _______ (fill in the name of the place where they work) day" to most strangers (clerks at stores, CS people on the phone) and it seems to perk 'em up a bit.

Just don't say "Make it a great day!" I recently decided not to see a guy anymore, partly because he was boring, but also because he ended a voice mail with that. That phrase makes me stabby! If I want to make it a crappy day, I will, thank you very much!

I get that! I hate when I'm having a horrible day, whining about it and someone tells me to "just be happy". I swear I could kill them.
