Do you think people are mostly nice or mostly not nice? I get pretty down on the human race sometimes but then like today when I see strangers pushing and digging cars out of snow drifts, neighbors checking on neighbors I feel a little more hopeful.

Hmmm....that's a tough one. I'd like to think most people are nice, but I don't get to see it as much as I'd like. It seems like I'm usually the helper, not ever being helped. I'm almost shocked when people do something nice for me, and even more shocked if they go out of their way to do it. Kind of sad.

My thoughts: 50% are nice. 30% are ok on a good day. 10% are always asses. The last 10% are only good for fertilizer.

I agree with oldtex - I'd say that at least 50% are generally nice and wouldn't think twice about doing nice things for family/friends or even strangers. Probably closer to 35percent are so-so and only 'nice' when they're expected to be, and the other 15% are just all-around jerks.

That is probably about right. Like Apple said sometimes it's almost surprising when people do nice things for people.

I believe that a full 90% have the capacity to be nice. And in some instances that dormant niceness comes out. However I'd have to agree with the 50% being genuinely nice people. Kinda sad...

I believe that 2% of the people suck the life out of 90% of my time because they are not nice, reasonable, rational, and in general suck pond water.
The other 98% have the potential to go either way on a daily basis.

My parents older neighborhood, they all pull together, a very close knit community. Our sterile new sub-division neighborhood in a big city, nobody knows hardly anyone. We have one neighbor who, for 3 years now, we still have not seen, or know if it is a he, or she, or both? People move in. People move out. Most do seem nice though.

I think people are mostly stupid. The rest is irrelevant. I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed about some things but I have loads of common sense. That is what I feel is truly lacking today. And street smarts. Kind of the same but more survivalistic. A lot of people today don't seem to have the good sense to get out of the rain or even away from the lightening.

Really? How much silver? (TD goes to calculate how much people could be worth at today's silver prices)

I'm nice. Most of the time. I don't kick kids or old people or dumb animals. I invite the person behind me in line at the grocery store to go ahead of me when I've got a cart full of stuff and they only have a few things. I park far away from the door to leave the spaces for people in a hurry. I'm nice to store clerks. And I don't lean on my horn when the car in front of me doesn't move right away at a green light. I wasn't always nice; had to get old first. Now I just figure what the E? I'm retired...got nowhere to go and all the time in the world to get there So maybe I'm nice.

however a person acts, there is a reason. If I see somebody being an absolute jerk, I try to imagine what may have put them at that place. I'm not trying to make excuses, just trying to walk in their shoes and NOT be a jerk back to them. It doesn't always work, but it's worth the effort

A lot of people today don't seem to have the good sense to get out of the rain or even away from the lightening. Read more: notmsnmoney.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=fun&action=display&thread=2803#ixzz1Cto44X3tI sooo have to agree with that statement. Not to mention that so many people these days refuse to be responsible for themselves - even older folks. There was a story on the news this morning about state retiree checks being less this month and how some had call this station. The state itself said it received over 4,000 phone calls. Turns out it had something to do with the Making Work Pay credit expiring and the state had sent letters out advising retirees of the upcoming change last month. Common sense tells you if you get a letter from the entity that pays you, you should take the time to open it and read it. Just like I fussed at my daughter yesterday when she was confused about just what her insurance covered as far as vision. I told her at renewal to read everything before she made her choice but my normally intelligent daughter couldn't be bothered and now has found out she will have to pay out of pocket for "basic" vision coverage. As for how nice folks are................I am also suprised when strangers are kind. I think its in most humans to be kind but many choose not to be (entitlement mentality). Then there are those that are innately cruel and do not have the capacity or the conscience to be kind to anyone or anything.

I am nice to a fault at times, and it is mostly not reciprocated. I spend a lot of my time helping and doing for others (friends, family and strangers). I will often get in a mood where I try my hardest not to be nice or help, but I quickly revert back. I will however stand up for myself if I have been wronged. I may be nice, but I am no pushover!

I think for the most part you get what you give. If you're nice and surround yourself with decent people you're going to have a pretty positive impression of people. If you continuously act like an ass you really can't be shocked people aren't going out of their way to do you favors. Obviously there are exceptions and some people are just going to be rude or so genuinely clueless that they don't know how to be nice and can't tell when someone needs them.
disclaimer: consider the source here. Nobody I know would in any way shape or form refer to me as "nice".

I think everyone is inherently selfish, even when they're doing something nice. I do nice things because I like the way I feel after doing them. I'm essentially a good person because I was raised to be one and my conscience would torture me if I did anything really bad or evil. So I selfishly do the most good I can to save myself the torment and to get that do-gooder high. In the end, does it really matter why I am nice or do good? Kindness is it's own reward...hence we are all selfish when being kind

I think it can go both ways. DBF can be very nice.......last time we had a major snow he had to drive me to work. It took for ever because he had to stop and help every single stuck car we passed. If you are a waitress and you mess up his order though you better watch out....Captain A-hole is going to come out.
But mostly I agree with the J. People are stupid.
