A decade after George Lucas said "Star Wars" was finished on the big screen, a new trilogy is destined for theaters, since The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that it was buying Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion.
The seventh movie, with a working title of "Episode 7," is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The new trilogy will carry the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond "Return of the Jedi," the third film released and the sixth in the saga. After that, Disney plans a new "Star Wars" movie every two or three years. Lucas will serve as the creative consultant for the new movies.movies.msn.com/movies/article.aspx?news=771595What say you all?

I say Disney will likely ruin it. Also, Luke, Han and Leia (or at least Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher) are getting a little long in the tooth. I can't imagine anyone but Harrison Ford as Han Solo.

I'm not sure it could do worse being out of Lucas' full control. Maybe Disney can get Joss Whedon to oversee it!

I remember years ago thinking that the original trio was supposed to be the 'middle' 3 of 9... but then he said they were over ... ... 1,2,3 were a bit of a mixed bag... ? ... not sure what it will be like to have other characters playing those characters...

I can't believe Lucas gave up control. Want to bet he'll be trying to get full control back in a few years?

I can't believe Lucas gave up control. Want to bet he'll be trying to get full control back in a few years? He's still left on as creative director or something like that. So he has some measure of control still.

"Creative consultant". It doesn't sound like it's nearly as powerful a role as it might be. Empire Strikes Back demonstrates that his product is best when there are more outside forces involved (ie different directors, different writer, etc). I'm happy to hear that someone else might be able to take a whack at the universe.

Harrison Ford is the only one who still looks like himself - Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have had too much work done (though Mark Hamill's was because of a car crash - can't fault him for that).
I would bring back Harrison but leave everyone else out of it. Though it would be better if they just laid it to rest. 4-6 are awesome but I doubt I will ever watch 1-3 again.

Sooooooo true I am surprised that Lucas sold, but cant think of ep. 7, 8, 9 being any worst then ep. 1,2,3 were. I’m still in denial about it’s existence. Darth being a whining brat with temper tantrums rivaling my 3 year old nephew is just too much for me.

Didn't like any of the movies before now, so I doubt I will waste my time or money going to see it/them. If I happen to get stuck watching tv with dh when they are showing on cable...then I might have to see some of it before I drift off to sleep.

I heard this on GMA this morning. My first thought was. .. Disney is going to ruin it.
Of course I agree with Steve it was already going down hill with the prequels. The more I watch them the less I can stand them. Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman have ZERO chemistry which defeats the whole premise of the movies. It's painful to watch them act together.
I do think Ewan McGreggor makes an excellent young Obi Wan Kenobi. I also think that the lightsaber duel between him and Anakin at the end of Episode III is pretty awesome, it's Ewan that makes the entire scene. Hayden still sucks.

I figure that Disney can't do any worse than Lucas has already done with the prequels. And they've done okay with Marvel so far, so maybe what the SW franchise really needs is an infusion of fresh blood. The SW universe has a lot to offer, and I hope that they spread their focus out and find some new directions to take it.

Clone Wars on Cartoon Network is pretty good, though I haven't sat down to watch it very often.

It is pretty good. Granted it's for kids, but it's pretty good. As was the earlier animated series bridging Eps 2 & 3. I think what the franchise really needed was new creative minds involved in it. Too bad Joss Whedon is overseeing the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Disney, because he'd be great to take on SW.

As far as still having appeal... I organize the scholastic book orders for our group and there are always new star wars things, legos, books, mad libs, etc.... and they always get purchased... there is obviously still a market. Star wars got passed on from the generation who saw the frist movies, to the next... and although that set wasn't nearly as good... it still stuck.

This is why I think there's still a lot of potential to it. My 10 year old nephew was obsessed with Star Wars for about the last 5 years. He's moved on to being obsessed with a video game for now, but he LOVED Star Wars in all media for quite a while. Give him an infusion of fresh material, and I think he'd be back there again.

Most of the books are pretty awesome, but like Rocky pointed out, they have fresh blood. They aren't all written by George Lucas. A lot of the books also take us out of the main characters. An entire series is devoted just to Wedge Antilles character.
I stopped at New Jedi Order because I was starting to get tired of following it. There have been several series after that I haven't read yet and don't plan to at the moment.
I could see adapting some of the books, those would bring in a huge new fan base. Especially if they did Heir to the Empire because Mara Jade has a following all her own and she can be branched out into her own series.
And just because I haven't revealed enough of my inner nerd did you know that Ewan McGreggor's uncle played Wedge Antilles in the original Star Wars movies?

I considered it but I think DH would have nixed it. I was really annoyed when I found out one of the authors bumps her off somewhere after New Jedi Order. I'd really like someone to publish books about her as the Emperor's Hand. She's a strong enough side character that she could hold up an entire series.

What they really aught to do, if indeed they are going to continue the luke-leah-han story - is to redo those 3 movies with the new ensemble, and then forge forward. Please no. I don't say that because I'm a Star Wars fan who doesn't want the originals messed with but because Hollywood needs to stop remaking everything and try to be at least a tiny bit original. Anyways as someone else mentioned there's a ton of books that have been written by people who aren't George Lucas and quite a few trilogies that I've seen fans say they'd like to see made into movies. The original cast is too old to reprise their roles and hopefully they move forward with a new cast and story. Regardless I'm sure Disney will make a nice amount of money off of it because of the name alone.

I agree, souldoubt, they need to strike out on their own, rather than remaking and focusing on the original trio. There's plenty of adventures to be found throughout the franchise's universe... after all, it's a whole galaxy far, far away!

Has anyone ridden the new Star Tours? I know Lucas had a hand in it, but I think Disney did a really good job with it. They included a lot of the worlds from the original ones but didn't seem to go crazy with updating it, just used the technology of the last 30 years to create it and filmed it in HD. But I'm no Star Wars fanatic so I'm not one that watched it really close. Also, they de-aged that guy in Tron (Jeff Bridges I think?) - maybe they could do that for the SW characters? They somehow had some of the original characters in Star Tours unaged...not sure how they did that though.

I'm not familiar with the books, but I think the thing that "made" the first 3 (6) movies is Darth Vader. His allure, his voice, his costume, his history, his threat. The fact that he used to be a Jedi... he was always such an interesting character and storyline. You loved him, you hated him, you loved him again. Now that he is gone, I'm not really that enamored with any of the remaining characters. Maybe I'm poo-pooing on something I don't know anything about, but it seems like even if the future of Han Solo, Luke, and Leia is interesting, it will never be as tragic/dramatic as the Vader/Luke/Leia storyline. That said, I'd certainly watch them!
