The FBI says there is one arrest every 42 seconds in the US for marijuana. 87% are for possession. What a colossal waste of time, police, money and lives. End the prohibition. End the waste of tax dollars.

True but I voted to keep it illegal since I can see it being harder to deal with drug test if it is legal. It makes it also more likely that parents would have less force in telling kids not to use it. Pretty cut and dried if it is illegal don't do it.

WA and OR are voting to legalize or not next week. Should be interesting. I don't smoke, but I may have to plant a plant in my backyard just for the novelty of it. ;D

So can strapping pads to your body, putting on a helmet, and spending several hours every Friday slamming into people. We don't make football illegal. A large percentage of boxers are pretty noticeably brain damaged by the end of their careers, boxing is still legal. Hell, kids are encouraged to do those activities because it'll make sure they're "healthy".
I'm not saying we should be encouraging kids to smoke pot, but on the scale of things that are bad for you a little MJ is on the low side of the bad for you scale.
How so?
Right now parents can tell their kids that they shouldn't smoke it because it's bad for you. That wouldn't change if it was legal. It would still be bad for you. We can argue about how bad, but legalizing it wouldn't make it good for you. Sugar is legal, and in fracking everything. I still tell my kids not to eat too much of it because it's bad for them. They can choose, to a certain extent anyway, whether or not to listen. The legality of the substance has no bearing on that interaction, except that legal controlled substances are much harder for teenagers to get their hands on.
It was way easier to get pot or meth in my highschool than it was to get alcohol. Because the first two are illegal so they're sold only by people who don't give a crap about laws. The third one is legal and controlled, so it's sold by people who do care about the law, and don't want to lose their liquor license by selling to kids. Keeping pot illegal makes it easier for your teenager to get, and means that if they want to try some they have to interact with somebody who might be pressuring them to smoke crack instead because the dealer makes more on it.

That stuff was awesome! No matter how sick you got, you could down half a bottle, hibernate for a day and a half, and wake up feeling right as rain. ETA - Plus I'm a big fan of anything that puts people into a near comatose sleep, as many of you already know.

Actually - the first 6 or so hours, I would be hung-over. But after that, things started to look up very quickly.

It would be very hypocritical to tell my teenagers that I am against MJ...
What I explain to them is that it is their choice. Both are over 18 and can decide for themselves. They have friends and understand the ramifications for drug testing and all that crap.
Then again, as someone who actually smokes it, I can say that it is much milder to me than alcohol and causes a shit ton less crap in your life, IMHO.

So - I grew up with pot smoking parents in a pot growing neighborhood. All the adults I knew did it. So far on this thread I think I'm the only one against it. It's true liberals raise conservatives.

Well I think to a lot of people it's kind of like the 'a' word... even if you would never do it and think it is totally awful, it doesn't mean it shouldn't be legal.

I'm confused by the A word too... Am I really that old? Colorado is trying to vote in recreational use. Medical use has been legal for a few years and is quite a booming business. I heard that several states overturned prohibition before the feds did, so maybe it will have some affect.

I don't smoke, but the time I have spent in Latin America makes me feel strongly that we should legalize it.
People that I know in the states who sell pot are mostly a harmless lot, but the criminal organizations that smuggle drugs across borders are a violent and powerful group. Lots of innocent people throughout Latin America get caught in the cross fire and many of their governments would like to legalize it, but fear trade sanctions from the US.

I disagree with legalizing it. But then, I don't like pot. I do think that if it's going to be legalized, it needs to be on the federal level, because our state has passed a medical marijuana law, and the feds and local D.A.'s are having a field day arresting and prosecuting the "medical" growers if they don't have exactly the right number of registered patients per plant, or something, so it was really all for nought, and if you're caught growing a bunch for medical use, you can get some prison time. It's quite perverted.

Wasn't it Ann Arbor, Michigan decades ago that said it was. 5 dollar fine and other than that, they weren't going to use manpower to enforce it? What ever happened to that? DF has a tenant in Lansing that's a medical marijuana dispenser. When he's late with his rent, DF makes noises about late fees being non cash!

there are positives and negatives in legalizing it
positives
tax it (income for feds and states) sorely needed less people incarcerated (less expense to states) less cases for prosecution (we can concentrate on more heinous crimes) police and da offices drug business has less items to sell (maybe fewer of them)
negatives
how many people that try marijuana go on to harder and different drugs (5, 10, 15%) this is my most worrisome item
how much of this now legal drug works its way into our schools at lower levels ( do we want stoners in elementary and junior high)
the worries are few....but they are issues.....and maybe they outweigh the positives
