OK, I'm pretty sure we're all joking now, but just in case we're not.... If the OP were to suddenly start carrying a gun in response to what has been described, as an employer I'd fire both crazy lady and OP. Judgment, people, and a little moderation are not bad things.Really? If the OP got a legal concealed to carry license in her state in order to protect herself, how would you know? More than one disgruntled employee has taken out their unhappiness on their coworkers. How would you plan on protecting the OP from this happening to her? Maybe I haven't been clear enough - even though I think I've put it in every single post I've written - but I would fire the crazy lady. Do you really think this single day's event is enough that a person should be afraid for their life? It just seems so much an overreaction to me...

Well apparently it's not an overreaction to kill someone for stealing your TV, so carrying a gun because someone yelled at you is probably OK too

Oh my. If it wasn't so crazy, it would be hilarious. That should be a scene in a movie.
Is the crazy lady at work?

Maybe you will be able to avoid her based on your work schedule. Good luck with that, and keep us informed. Unfortunately, you won't find out any of the good juicy stuff. Stupid HR, being all respectful of people's privacy and stuff. Boooo!

But this was NOT a single day's event. This has happened to many other people as well, the OP just happened to get on crazy lady's radar this time.
<shrug> If the OP never needs to use her firearm, then no harm, no foul. She's got a skill that she's learned. But it's not as if there have been no reports of pissed off employees killing their coworkers when they've gone off the deep end.

...:::"Do you really think this single day's event is enough that a person should be afraid for their life? It just seems so much an overreaction to me...":::...
As much fun as it is to judge and editorialize, I believe that in many cases, we have to deal with "what is" not with what "should" be. Its somewhat ironic to say that getting a weapon for self defense due to one two encounters with a crazy person is "overreacting" when it was the behavior of the crazy person that made this an issue in the first place. Sure, it'd be nice if the crazy person faced disciplinary action (after what is clearly a pattern) or if she wasn't crazy in the first place. But if I was the OP and told my reaction was "too much" by HR, and they even implied I could be let go, I would make sure to be their most expensive, and difficult firing EVER.
Which of course brings us back to the power of document, document, document!
...:::"Crazy lady was yelling "oh, I just LOVE the audience. You! And You! And You!". She circled the room and put her finger in all of their faces.":::...
This is where that whole "baiting but not necessarily breaking the letter of the law" thing comes in. It would take every ounce of my discipline not to catch and break that ladys finger off. Yet if I did that, *I'D* be the one facing the disciplinary action.
On the other hand... NOBODY would ever put a finger in my face again.

Very sad that she has been allowed to do this over and over again. The fact that she has been allowed to get away with this is what empowers her to continue this behavior. The first time she did it she should have been escorted off the premises and out of the school, permanently.

LOL!! Didn't the witch in the Wizard of Oz do that right before she melted down? Wrongside - That is great you have different schedules. I hope you never have to deal with her again.

If she is a tenured professor, and they are asking STUDENTS to write up accounts of what happened, I really don't think you have much to worry about. It definitely looks like your employer is on your side.
My guess is that she will be coddled through the end of the semester or school year, and then she will "disappear".
I hope things get easier for you. Is there any way to find out when she's there on "your" days and just shut the door / be unavailable?

The problem with dealing with impossible people is that they never question themselves, they are never wrong, which is what makes them impossible. Meanwhile, as a sane person, you are left questioning yourself and your judgement. It stinks, but I believe you have all the tools you need to handle yourself in this situation.
